To fix a Pit Boss that won’t connect to Wi-Fi, enable Bluetooth on your phone, allow the Pit Boss Grills app to use it, and pair the grill with a 2.4 GHz network. Start with those setup requirements, then check signal strength, restart your devices, and accept any required firmware update. These steps apply to grills with compatible Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controllers.

The short version

  • Pairing requirements: Use Pit Boss Grills with Bluetooth enabled and choose a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • Discovery problems: Check the app’s phone permissions and leave other grills off while pairing.
  • Weak reception: Check signal strength in the app and improve coverage while keeping the grill outdoors.
  • Persistent failures: Restart your devices and accept required firmware updates before repeating setup.

Check the app and start pairing again

Use the current Pit Boss Grills app for a grill equipped with a compatible connected controller. Pit Boss Grills replaced SmokeIT, and Pit Boss says controllers with migrated firmware cannot reconnect through SmokeIT. Sign in with your Pit Boss website credentials, or create an account before pairing if you bought as a guest or through a retailer and do not have one.

Enable Bluetooth in your phone’s settings, then plug in and turn on the grill you want to connect. Leave other grills off during pairing. Bluetooth is required for the initial Wi-Fi setup, even though the connection you are configuring is Wi-Fi.

In Pit Boss Grills, open Grills > +Add Grill, review the Privacy Policy, and select Continue. Select the discovered grill, choose your network, and enter its Wi-Fi password. If discovery fails, check phone permissions next; if the grill is discovered but the network connection fails, move on to the 2.4 GHz and signal checks.

Allow the app to discover your grill

On an iPhone, the system Bluetooth switch and an app’s permission to use Bluetooth are separate controls. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth and enable access for Pit Boss Grills if it is listed. When the initial Bluetooth permission prompt appears during setup, tap OK.

On Android, open Settings > Apps > Pit Boss Grills > Permissions, using See all apps if needed to find the app. If Nearby devices is listed and denied, select it and select Allow. Review Location if the app requests it; the permissions shown depend on your Android version and the app.

For the PB1300M, model/item 11112, stay within 9 m/30 ft during discovery. Pit Boss instructs you to choose Always allow for location and Bluetooth services on that model, although the actual phone permission wording can differ. Select Add Grill, choose the model, name it, and select Continue, then choose a 2.4 GHz network. If prompted for firmware during this setup flow, select OK.

Choose a 2.4 GHz network

Compatible Pit Boss Wi-Fi controllers need the router’s 2.4 GHz band enabled. If that band is off, sign into your router’s IP address in a browser using your router administrator access. Pit Boss gives Advanced Settings > Network Settings as an example location for enabling 2.4 GHz, but the actual path depends on your router.

Return to the app’s pairing flow, select the 2.4 GHz network, and enter its password. If the grill still cannot connect, check coverage at its location next.

Improve the signal at the grill

Inspect Wi-Fi signal strength in the Pit Boss app when you can access it. To improve a weak Wi-Fi signal, reposition the router to reduce obstructions or install a Wi-Fi extender. Retry pairing after improving coverage at the grill’s location.

You can also move the grill closer to the router when inadequate range is the problem. Keep it outdoors and at least 36 inches from combustibles, and observe your model’s clearance requirements. If reception is adequate but the connection still fails, continue with the restarts.

Restart the router phone and grill

Restart the router if a router malfunction may be affecting the connection, then retry pairing. If the app still fails to connect, restart your phone, reopen Pit Boss Grills, and try again.

Next, restart the grill using the shutdown and startup procedure for your specific model. Once it is back on, repeat pairing through the app. If restarting does not resolve the failure, check the app and controller software next.

Update the app and controller firmware

On an iPhone, open the App Store, select My Account or tap your photo, then open App Updates. Beside Pit Boss Grills, tap Update when an update is offered.

On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and select Manage apps & device. Under Updates available, tap See details, then tap Update beside Pit Boss Grills.

A controller that requires new firmware may need that update before it can connect through the app. If you previously declined the software-update prompt, close and reopen Pit Boss Grills, then select yes when prompted again.

When you can reach the screen containing Control Your Grill, open the Edit Grill icon and check for firmware updates. If firmware trouble continues to prevent connection, contact Pit Boss with your model and serial numbers.

Remove the saved grill and pair it again

Removing the grill deletes its saved entry from the app. Open Grills, select the edit icon, then select the trash can. At the prompt Are you sure you want to delete this grill?, select yes.

Repeat setup through Grills > +Add Grill, with Bluetooth enabled and the intended grill powered on. Select the discovered grill and enter the credentials for your 2.4 GHz network. Removing and pairing again is a troubleshooting option, but it does not guarantee that a persistent connection problem will be resolved.

Check connected hardware and get further help

If your grill lacks wireless hardware, check whether it is compatible with the Legacy Connected Control Board, SKU 80015. This upgrade applies to specific models, so confirm compatibility before getting it. Install it only with the supplied model-specific instructions, then pair it with Pit Boss Grills.

For unresolved pairing failures, firmware problems, or suspected controller trouble, open Pit Boss’s Customer Support Center and find CONTACT CUSTOMER CARE. Call 480.923.9630 with the grill’s model and serial numbers available. For a PB1300M with persistent home-network trouble after the band and coverage checks, contact your internet service provider.
