To fix a NETGEAR extender with no internet connection, check the router’s internet access, restart the network, then reconnect the extender within reliable router coverage. If the connection stopped after you changed the router or its Wi-Fi password, update the extender’s connection settings. Save a factory reset for after these checks because it erases personalized settings.

The short version

  • Check the router: Test internet access directly through the router before changing extender settings.
  • Restart in order: Start the modem first, then the separate router, extender and connected devices.
  • Improve placement: Keep the extender inside the router’s usable Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Reconnect when needed: Set up the extender again with the correct router network and password.
  • Reset last: A factory reset erases personalized settings and requires setup again.

Check the internet connection at the router

Start by finding out whether the router itself has internet access. On a compatible computer, disable Wi-Fi and connect directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. Restart the computer and test internet access.

If that connection also fails, restart the router and modem using the sequence below. You can also test directly through a compatible modem; contact your internet provider if that connection fails. Resolve that upstream connection problem before continuing with extender setup.

Restart the network in the right order

Power down the modem, router, extender and connected devices, then wait two minutes. Turn on the modem first and allow approximately five minutes for its connection to your internet provider. Start the separate router and wait for connectivity, then power up the extender and your devices.

A combined modem and router does not need the separate-router step. Once the network is running again, reconnect through the extender and test internet access. If the router works but the extender still does not, check placement next.

For an extender-only restart on an EAX12, EXS18, EXS25 or EXS27, log into the extender locally and open Settings > Other > RESTART. Click Yes and wait for the extender to restart.

Improve placement and check the router radios

Bring the extender closer to the router, preferably with fewer obstructions between them. During setup, power it beside the router. If your model has an Access Point/Extender switch, set it to Extender for a wireless connection to the router.

After setup, place it approximately halfway toward the area with weak coverage while keeping it inside the router’s usable coverage. Improving placement can help fix a weak Wi-Fi signal. Router-link LED colors differ by model, so use your model’s indicators when judging the connection.

A correct password that is repeatedly rejected during setup is another reason to try closer to the router. Also check that the router’s Wi-Fi radios are on. On NETGEAR routers equipped with a WiFi On/Off button, press it for two seconds if the radios were turned off with the button, then check the router’s radio indicators. The button cannot turn the radios back on if they were turned off in the router’s web interface.

On NETGEAR routers with the corresponding browser controls, connect to the router, log in and open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless settings. For each required band, select Enable Wireless Router Radio, then click Apply. For other router brands, follow that maker’s instructions.

If interference is causing disconnections on a NETGEAR router with configurable channels, log into the router and open Wireless. Locate the affected band, choose an available Channel and click Apply. Ensure the extender reconnects using the changed channel.

Open the extender settings locally

Connect directly to the extender by Wi-Fi or, on a model with an Ethernet port, by cable. Open http://www.mywifiext.net in your browser. This is a local management address, so you can reach it without a working internet connection.

Usable addresses depend on the model and device you are using. If the first address fails, try http://www.mywifiext.com, http://mywifiext or http://mywifiext.local. Use 192.168.1.250 only when the extender still uses its default address.

For a configured extender, open the main router’s connected-device list and find the extender’s assigned IP address. Enter that address in a browser while connected to the local network. This is particularly useful when the extender and router share the same Wi-Fi name.

If the page still will not open, try another browser or connect a computer to the extender’s Ethernet port, if fitted. Reseat both cable ends if the device-link indicator is unlit. A computer joining NETGEAR_EXT should obtain its network address through DHCP instead of retaining an inappropriate static address; reconnect and reopen the local page after correcting that setting.

For recovery access to an extender on its default subnet, first record the computer’s existing gateway or router address and network settings. NETGEAR’s recovery procedure uses the temporary computer IP address 192.168.1.249 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Use these only for management access, then restore the computer’s normal configuration afterward.

Reconnect the extender to your router

If you changed the router or its Wi-Fi password, reconnect the extender with the current details. On an EAX16 or EAX17, log into the extender, open Status and click SMART SETUP. Select the router network again and enter its case-sensitive Wi-Fi password. If configuration fails and offers another attempt, click YES.

For models using NETGEAR’s browser installation assistant, join NETGEAR_EXT and select Always connect despite the initial no-internet warning. Open mywifiext.com and select NEW EXTENDER SETUP. Select YES when offered, or select I AGREE on the alternative screen.

Create administrator credentials and recovery answers, then select NEXT to choose the router’s Wi-Fi networks and enter their passwords. Complete setup and reconnect to the resulting extended network. Keep the extender beside the router while completing this process.

On a Nighthawk-compatible extender, you can get the iOS or Android app through the official Nighthawk app page. Open Menu > SET UP A NEW NIGHTHAWK SYSTEM > GET STARTED! > Range Extender. With the extender powered beside the router, tap NEXT, then CONTINUE.

If prompted to join the extender, select Choose Network, join NETGEAR_EXT and select Always connect. Return to the app, tap WIFI IS CONNECTED, then continue with NEXT. Select the router networks, enter their passwords and create administrator credentials and recovery answers; tap UPDATE if offered.

Check settings that can interrupt the connection

Use these paths only for the named models, after connecting to the extender and logging in locally. On an EAX16 or EAX17 whose extender Wi-Fi radios are disabled, open Settings > Wireless. Select Enable 2.4 GHz WiFi and Enable 5 GHz WiFi, then click SAVE. Use Ethernet management if both radios are disabled.

If an EAX16 or EAX17 network is hidden, open the same Wireless page. In the affected band, select Broadcast the Network Name (SSID), then click SAVE. This restores network visibility rather than fixing an upstream internet outage.

On an EXS18, EXS25 or EXS27, a single affected device may be blocked by the extender. Open Settings > Connected Devices, uncheck Deny for that device and click SAVE. If disconnections occur at scheduled times, open Do More > Access Schedule, review Days, Time and Scheduled Times, correct unwanted blocking periods and click SAVE. The schedule affects both wired and wireless connectivity.

Those EXS models also let you correct an inappropriate static extender IP configuration. Open Settings > Wireless, scroll down and click the IP Address heading, select Dynamically get IP Address from Router and click SAVE. This restores the default addressing mode.

If your EXS18, EXS25 or EXS27 sits behind a router using MAC filtering, temporarily disable the router’s MAC filter or access-control list. Connect the devices through the extender, then open the extender’s Settings > Connected Devices to obtain their virtual MAC addresses. Add the extender’s and clients’ virtual addresses to the router’s allowlist, then re-enable filtering.

Update the extender firmware

NETGEAR’s online update procedure covers the EAX10/11/12/14/15/16/17/18/20/50/80 families and EXS18/EXS25/EXS27, with the hardware revision matched. Connect to the extender and log in locally. On an EAX12, EAX16, EAX17, EXS18, EXS25 or EXS27, open Menu if shown, select Firmware Update and click CHECK ONLINE. On the other listed EAX models, NETGEAR’s general procedure uses Settings > Firmware Update > Check Online. Follow the displayed prompts to install an offered update.

On covered EX-series interfaces, use Settings > Firmware Update, or the alternative Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade path. Click Check Online or Check, matching the interface, and follow the update prompts. Match any firmware download to the exact model and hardware revision.

If an EXS18, EXS25 or EXS27 cannot download firmware itself, use another internet connection to obtain and unzip the matching firmware from the NETGEAR Download Center. You can also obtain the model’s release notes and manual there. Do not substitute firmware for a similarly named model.

Keep power uninterrupted throughout the firmware upload and restart. Log into the extender locally, open Firmware Update, click BROWSE and choose the downloaded .img or .chk file. Click UPLOAD and allow the restart to finish.

Restore a saved configuration or factory reset

Restoring a saved configuration replaces the extender’s current configuration with the saved settings. On an EAX12 with a suitable previously saved configuration, log in locally and open Settings > Other > BROWSE. Choose the saved .cfg file, click RESTORE and follow the confirmation prompt. Allow the restart to finish.

A factory reset erases personalized settings and requires you to configure the extender again. With power on and stable, use a paper clip to hold the Reset or Factory Reset button until the Power LED blinks. NETGEAR’s general procedure allows up to 15 seconds; follow your model manual when its timing differs. Wait for a stable power indication, then complete setup again beside the router using the applicable browser or app method above.

A browser factory reset also erases settings and requires setup again. On an EAX12, EXS18, EXS25 or EXS27, log in locally and open Settings > Other > RESET. Follow the confirmation dialog, then configure the extender again.

If the connection still fails, follow NETGEAR’s support route and select Contact Us, then click Get Support > OPEN A SUPPORT CASE. Sign into or create a NETGEAR account and select an eligible product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you reconnect an EAX12 using WPS?

On an EAX12, press the extender’s WPS button, then press the router’s WPS or Sync button within two minutes. After the Router Link LED turns green, repeat for the second band. A hidden router network requires browser setup instead. Other extender models need their own WPS instructions and compatible router security.

How can you test the extender when it shares the router’s Wi-Fi name?

On supported One WiFi Name models, including EAX16/EAX17, EAX20/EAX80 and EXS18/EXS25/EXS27, disabling One WiFi Name also disables its mesh functionality. Log in, open Settings > Wireless and select No under One WiFi Name. Set Network Name (SSID) and WiFi Password, click SAVE, then reconnect specifically to that network to test the extender connection.

Can an Ethernet cable replace the wireless connection to the router?

You can use Ethernet on an access-point-capable extender; an Ethernet port alone does not establish that support. Connect the extender to a router LAN port by Ethernet and set its physical switch to Access Point if fitted. Join NETGEAR_EXT, open www.mywifiext.net and select NEW EXTENDER SETUP. Create local administrator credentials, click NEXT, select Access Point when asked and finish network configuration.

Can you open an EAX16 or EAX17 through the Nighthawk network map?

You can use this route when you also have a Nighthawk router. Connect your phone to the configured extender network, open the router’s app dashboard, select Network Map and tap the extender icon. Use the browser interface if app access fails.
