Your mouse wheel scrolls, but pressing it does nothing. A changed button assignment, software interference, or a failed switch can leave you with exactly that problem. Start with the connection and button checks, then follow the fixes for your app, mouse software, or operating system.

Start with the mouse and its connection

Test middle-click in another application. Keep track of whether only that click fails or whether movement, scrolling, and other buttons stop responding too.

Disconnect your USB mouse or wireless receiver. Wait approximately 10 seconds before reconnecting a receiver.

Reconnect it directly to the computer, bypassing any hub, dock, extender, or switch.

Try another USB port.

For a wired mouse, inspect the cable for damage.

Recharge a battery-powered mouse or install fresh batteries.

If the mouse has a power switch, turn it off and back on.

For a Logitech middle button that sticks or responds intermittently, use compressed air around the affected button to remove debris.

Test the click again after cleaning.

On the Logitech MX Anywhere 2S, press the separate middle button directly below the wheel. Pressing the wheel itself switches between hyperfast and click-to-click scrolling, which ratchets the wheel. Logitech notes that installing its software turns that separate middle button into a gesture button, so check its assignment in Logi Options+ if pressing it triggers a gesture instead of a middle-click.

If these checks fail, save your work and restart the computer. Then check the button assignment below, especially when movement and the other buttons still work.

A changed assignment can replace middle-click

A remapped or disabled button stops performing middle-click even though the physical button still registers.

For a supported Logitech mouse, open Logi Options+, select your mouse, and open BUTTONS.

Select the affected button and choose Middle button.

If the failure happens in one application, inspect that application's configuration as well as the default configuration.

Restore Middle button in the affected profile. Some browser profiles deliberately assign Open link in a new tab instead.

For a Logitech gaming mouse, open G HUB and select the affected profile or DESKTOP - Default.

Select your mouse and open Assignments.

Select the button or its assignment and choose USE DEFAULT. This also re-enables a button previously set to DISABLE.

For a compatible Razer mouse, open Synapse 4 > DEVICES and select your mouse.

Select the affected button.

Choose Mouse Function and select the intended mouse action from your model's available actions.

Click SAVE.

To check for Razer software interference, right-click the Razer system-tray icon and choose Exit All Apps.

Retest middle-click with Synapse closed.

In X-Mouse Button Control, select the relevant application profile and layer, including any profile for the app where the click fails.

Set the middle-button action to No Change (Don't intercept).

Click Apply and retest.

When only your browser misbehaves

Missing autoscroll alone does not establish a failed middle button. In Firefox, open Settings and enable Use autoscrolling. Test by middle-clicking the page or scrollbar and moving the mouse.

For other Firefox middle-click problems, open Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode… > Restart and enter the troubleshooting session. Retest middle-click there. If it works, investigate the extensions and customizations disabled during that session.

In Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn suspected extensions off one at a time, testing middle-click after each change.

For an extension you identify as the culprit, select Remove and confirm with Remove. When middle-click works in other applications, finish these browser checks before changing the mouse driver.

If the wireless connection is unreliable too

Use these connection checks when movement or other buttons also stop responding. For an isolated middle-click failure, check assignments and test the mouse on another computer.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on.

Bring the mouse within range of the computer.

Move it away from potentially interfering USB 3.0 devices.

For a fresh pairing, open the mouse's More options (…) menu in Bluetooth & devices and choose Remove device.

Put the mouse into pairing mode using its model-specific controls.

Select Add device and select your mouse.

If Bluetooth remains unreliable, open Microsoft's Bluetooth troubleshooting page and select Run the troubleshooter in Get Help.

Follow the diagnostics in Get Help.

On a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.

Disconnect the mouse, then reconnect it.

For a fresh pairing, Control-click the mouse's name and choose Forget.

Make the mouse discoverable using its pairing controls.

Connect it again in Bluetooth.

For an MX Anywhere 2S controlling another computer, press Easy-Switch to select the correct paired channel.

To establish a new pairing, hold Easy-Switch for three seconds until its light flashes rapidly.

Pair the mouse through Bluetooth or a compatible receiver.

Update or restore the Windows mouse driver

On Windows 11, work through these driver options, stopping when middle-click works again.

  1. 1.Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates. Select relevant mouse, Bluetooth, or other applicable hardware drivers offered for your computer, choose Download and install, and restart.
  2. 2.If you have downloaded an official driver for your mouse, right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand the mouse's device category, right-click the identified device, and choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers. Select the driver's folder and choose Next. Category and device names depend on your hardware.
  3. 3.If the failure began immediately after a driver update, right-click the affected device in Device Manager and open Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. Choose a reason, select Yes, and restart if prompted. This requires administrator permissions and an available previous driver.
  4. 4.If updating or rolling back does not resolve the problem, right-click the identified mouse in Device Manager and choose Uninstall device > Uninstall. Restart the computer. Windows attempts to reinstall the driver during the restart.

Mac permissions can block Logitech customization

Missing permissions or disabled background components prevent Logi Options+ button customizations from working.

On macOS Ventura and later, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and enable Logi Options+.

Open Input Monitoring under Privacy & Security and enable Logi Options+.

Select Quit & Reopen when prompted.

Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and enable the Logi applications. Some macOS versions label this pane Login items. Logitech says disabling these background components prevents customization from working.

If a Logitech USB receiver is not detected at all, reconnect it and choose Allow when macOS asks.

If you previously ignored that request, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Allow accessories to connect and select Ask every time.

Reconnect the receiver and approve it with Allow.

For an installation affected by Logitech's macOS certificate failure, download the appropriate Options+ patch or G HUB installer from Logitech's certificate repair page. Apply the repair before attempting to uninstall the software.

Run the repair and authenticate when prompted.

For G HUB, exit the installer when the existing-software message appears.

Launch G HUB again.

If the repair still fails, restart the Mac before proceeding to reinstallation. Reinstallation carries a risk of losing customizations.

If the problem persists after the repair and restart, move the affected app from Applications to Trash.

Wait three minutes.

Restart the Mac.

Run the replacement installer from Logitech's certificate repair page.

When to replace the mouse or use a substitute button

If middle-click still fails after the connection, assignment, and software checks, test the mouse on another computer. This is especially useful when left-click and wheel rotation still work.

Connect the mouse to another computer.

Install its required driver if applicable.

Test middle-click. For a Razer mouse, perform this test without Synapse running to isolate software interference.

If the same button fails on both computers, contact the manufacturer for repair, warranty evaluation, or replacement. A normal click sound does not rule out a failed switch.

To substitute another button on a supported Logitech mouse, open Logi Options+, select the mouse, and open BUTTONS.

Select another programmable button and assign Middle button. This gives you a working substitute without repairing the faulty switch.

On Windows, X-Mouse Button Control provides another workaround for mice that expose standard button events. Select the intended profile and layer.

Open a working button's action dropdown and select Middle Click.

Click Apply.

For Chrome, use Ctrl-click on Windows or Linux, or Command-click on Mac, to open a link in a background tab.

Close the current tab with Ctrl+W on Windows or Linux, or Command+W on Mac, while you arrange a lasting fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does middle-click work elsewhere but not pan in AutoCAD?

Check AutoCAD's pan setting first. At the command line, enter MBUTTONPAN and set it to 1. For customized button behavior, enter CUI and inspect Mouse Button > Click > Button 3; Autodesk documents setting its macro to PAN. Test without third-party add-ons.

Will changing Windows scrolling settings fix middle-click?

No. Roll the mouse wheel to scroll, Lines to scroll at a time, and Scroll inactive windows when hovering over them control wheel rotation behavior. They do not repair a failed wheel-click switch.

Can I emulate middle-click by pressing both mouse buttons?

Supported GNOME/Linux configurations allow middle-click emulation by pressing the left and right buttons together. With tap-clicking enabled, compatible touchpads also support a three-finger tap. These are not universal Windows or Mac shortcuts.

What should I do if my work computer blocks a mouse driver installation?

Ask your administrator to inspect Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions. They should correct the specific policy affecting your mouse or receiver rather than disabling restrictions wholesale.
