You changed the batteries, but your Honeywell thermostat still has a blank screen, unresponsive controls, or no heating or cooling. A normal battery change doesn't automatically require a factory reset. Start with the battery procedure for your model, then follow the checks that match what you're seeing.

Get the Batteries and Fit Right

Start here. Honeywell thermostats use different battery types and compartments, so match the procedure to your model.

For a FocusPRO P200 TH2110U4004 or TH2320U4006, pull the thermostat off its mount. Install fresh AA batteries following the compartment's polarity diagram. Then align the thermostat with the mounting plate and gently press until it snaps into place.

On an RTH2300 or RTH221, move the System switch to Off. Next, pull the thermostat away from the wallplate at the bottom. Turn it over to reach the battery compartment.

Install two fresh AAA alkaline batteries according to the polarity markings. Reinstall the thermostat on its wallplate.

For a battery-equipped FocusPRO 6000 TH6110D, TH6220D, or TH6320U, press and pull the removable battery holder out. This procedure applies to those battery-equipped models, not Wi-Fi FocusPRO models. Replace the batteries with fresh AA alkaline batteries. Reinstall the holder securely.

On a T4 Pro, gently loosen and remove the thermostat from its wall mount. Install fresh AA alkaline batteries with the indicated polarity. Reattach the thermostat to its mount.

For a T6 Pro Z-Wave TH6320ZW2003 or TH6320ZW2007, set Mode to Off. These instructions do not apply to T6 Pro Wi-Fi. Replace all three batteries with fresh AA alkaline batteries, matching the compartment's + and − markings. Reattach the thermostat.

If fresh batteries and a secure fit don't restore operation, check the operating mode next. For a dark or blank display, go straight to the display and power checks below.

Restore Heating or Cooling

A working screen doesn't mean the thermostat is requesting heating or cooling. Check whether it's still set to Off after the battery replacement.

On a T4 Pro, press Mode until Heat appears for heating, or Cool for cooling. Available modes depend on the model and installation. Set the target temperature above room temperature for heating, or below it for cooling. Allow five minutes for the equipment to respond.

Give the Protection Delay Five Minutes

A compressor protection delay causes Cool On, or Heat On during heat-pump operation, to flash on a T4 Pro. Wait five minutes for the delay to finish.

On a FocusPRO P200 TH2110U4004 or TH2320U4006, wait five minutes when WAITING FOR EQUIPMENT appears. That's its equipment-delay message. If the P200 still shows no heating or cooling call afterward, check its operating mode. Compare the target temperature with room temperature to confirm you're requesting heating or cooling.

Check a Dark Display and HVAC Power

On a T4 Pro TH4110U2005 or TH4210U2002, press any thermostat button to wake the backlight. Battery-only operation lights the screen briefly. An unlit backlight alone isn't a dead thermostat.

For a T6 Pro II showing alert 405, Low Battery, or alert 407, Critically Low Battery, recheck the replacement AA batteries. Low power disables the backlight; critically low power leaves only BATT and warning icons visible. These alerts require battery replacement, not dismissal of a filter reminder.

With a Lyric Round, approach the thermostat to wake it. If it doesn't wake, gently remove it from the wallplate. Replace its AAA lithium battery. This lithium requirement applies specifically to Lyric Round models that use that battery.

For a T4 Pro with a blank display or equipment that doesn't respond despite working batteries, check the HVAC circuit breaker and reset it if necessary. Make sure the heating and cooling equipment's power switch is on. Securely close the furnace access door.

If these checks fail, use the model-specific support options below or arrange professional diagnosis. For hardwired models with a C-wire, have a contractor investigate supply or C-wire faults. Turn HVAC power off before handling wiring.

Restore the Clock Before Changing the Schedule

On an RTH2300 or RTH221, press SET to access the clock. Use the arrow buttons to set the time. On the RTH2300 only, press SET again to access weekday selection.

Choose the correct weekday with the arrow buttons. Press RUN to save.

On a T4 Pro TH4110U2005 or TH4210U2002, open Menu > TIME > Select. Choose the 12-hour or 24-hour format, confirming it with Select. Set the hour, confirming it with Select. Set the minutes, confirming them with Select.

Open Menu > DATE > Select. Set the year, confirming it with Select. Set the month, confirming it with Select. Set the date, confirming it with Select.

Correct the clock before editing a schedule that runs at the wrong time.

Take Control of an Unwanted Schedule

On an RTH2300 or RTH221, use the arrow buttons for a temporary temperature change. For continuous manual control, press HOLD and adjust the temperature with the arrow buttons. To cancel an override and resume scheduled operation, press RUN.

On a T4 Pro TH4110U2005 or TH4210U2002 with scheduling enabled, turn scheduling off through Menu > PROG > Select: change ON to OFF with the adjustment buttons and confirm with Select.

Unlock Controls That Won't Respond

If the display works but the controls won't respond, check for a keypad lock. Use the unlock procedure for your model.

On a T4 Pro TH4110U2005 or TH4210U2002, press the center button. Enter 1234 using the adjustment buttons, pressing Select after each digit. Press Select once more afterward.

For a FocusPRO P200, press the left-center button at UNLOCK until a zero and three dashes appear. Enter 1234 using the arrows and SELECT to confirm each digit. Press SELECT again to finish.

If a P200 lets you change the temperature but stops short of the normal range, check the operating mode first. Ask the installer to review its maximum heating or minimum cooling setpoint if the restriction remains. Those limits are installation settings, not a reason to reset the thermostat after a battery change.

Get Model-Specific Help Before Resetting

Model-specific support addresses persistent blank displays, wiring faults, and uncertain system configuration. Enter your model number in Honeywell Home's thermostat support selector to open the matching troubleshooting flow. Choose CHAT WITH A SPECIALIST for further troubleshooting or FIND A PRO for professional diagnosis. For phone support, call 1-800-633-3991.

Use a factory reset on a T6 Pro Z-Wave TH6320ZW2003 or TH6320ZW2007 only when its system-type configuration can be restored. A factory reset clears that configuration too.

Keep batteries installed according to your model's polarity markings. The reverse-battery reset belongs to the legacy MagicStat CT3200; it is not a general reset procedure for current Honeywell thermostats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing the batteries erase my Honeywell thermostat settings?

Several Honeywell thermostat manuals specify that settings are retained during battery replacement. Retention depends on the model, so check its manual before reprogramming.

How do I stop a FocusPRO P200 keypad from locking again?

If the installer has enabled access to the lock-setting menu, open Menu > LOCK > SELECT > OFF > SELECT > SAVE & EXIT.

What if the thermostat works on the wall but ignores the app?

For compatible Resideo-app thermostats, restart the app. Restart your phone next. If the problem remains, update or reinstall the Resideo app from your phone's app store. Resideo says deleting the app does not delete your account or registered devices.

What if I changed the room sensor batteries rather than the thermostat batteries?

For X8S/X8Q indoor sensors, remove the sensor from its wallplate. Install two fresh AAA alkaline batteries, then reattach it. Green flashing confirms good batteries; red flashing means fresh batteries are needed. Allow a few seconds for automatic reconnection. Other sensors have their own replacement procedures.
