You try to add someone on Discord, but the friend request fails. Start with the recipient’s permissions, which Discord identifies as a cause of the failed-request warning, then check the username and account restrictions. These fixes also cover requests that arrived without an alert, so you can separate a rejected request from an overlooked one.

Start with the recipient’s friend request settings

The first cause to check is that the recipient’s settings do not allow your friend request.

Ask the person to send you a request using your current username. Discord recommends reversing the request when someone has disabled incoming requests.

If they want to receive your request instead, ask them to open the cogwheel on desktop or in a browser.

Have them go to User Settings > Content & Social > Friend Requests.

Ask them to enable Everyone.

Retry your request. Changing your own incoming-request permissions does not change who can send requests to them.

For a narrower audience, ask the recipient to enable Friends of Friends in the same settings instead.

Check Mutual Friends on their profile to confirm you share an existing friend.

Retry the request once that shared connection and permission are in place.

If you both belong to the same server, ask the recipient to enable Server Members instead.

Send the request again from their profile once that permission is enabled.

Correct the username Discord rejects

An incorrect-username error calls for checking the account identifier. A display name or server nickname is different from the unique username Discord uses for friend requests.

Ask the person for their current unique username.

Check every letter, digit, period, and underscore. Current usernames are lowercase.

On desktop or in a browser, select the Discord logo, then open Friends > Add Friend.

Enter the exact username in the friend-request field.

Select Send Friend Request.

On mobile, open the chat bubble, then go to Add Friends > Add by Username.

Enter their username in that field.

Tap Send Friend Request.

Skip older instructions that call for a case-sensitive name and four-digit tag, such as username#1234. That belongs to Discord’s previous username system; use the person’s current unique username.

Send directly from their profile

Open the person’s profile from a shared server, group conversation, or DM.

On desktop or in a browser, select their profile, then press View Profile.

Select Send Friend Request.

On mobile, tap their profile to open it.

Tap Add Friend. If that button isn’t shown, open the profile’s ellipsis menu and tap Add Friend there.

Using the profile avoids typing mistakes, but the recipient’s friend-request permissions still apply.

Check whether a block prevents the request

A block prevents new friend requests, but a failed request alone does not prove someone has blocked you.

Check your own list on desktop or in a browser under User Settings > Content & Social > Accounts you've blocked & ignored.

On mobile, open your avatar.

Tap the cogwheel.

Go to Settings > Content & Social.

Inspect the blocked and ignored account list.

If a block exists, the account that placed it must reverse that decision before a new request can go through. You cannot override a block placed by the recipient.

Ignoring works differently: it suppresses request alerts without preventing delivery. For an ignored account, check for a delivered request using the inbox steps below.

Resolve account restrictions on friend requests

A visible Limited Access banner means Discord has restricted your account’s ability to send outgoing friend requests. For a linked teen, incoming-request permissions also depend on any settings managed through Family Center.

For Limited Access, select Regain Access Here in the banner or restriction notice.

Submit the appeal through that flow. Recipient permission changes cannot remove this account restriction.

For a linked teen’s managed permissions, have the connected guardian open Account > Family Center.

Select My Family.

Select the connected teen.

Review Friend Requests in the teen’s account settings.

Choose the appropriate audience. Linked teens cannot change these managed settings themselves.

Free space when you reach a limit

Removing unwanted requests or friendships frees capacity at the corresponding limit.

On desktop or in a browser, open Friends > Pending to review outgoing requests. Discord allows up to 1,000 outgoing pending requests.

Select the X beside an outgoing request you no longer want.

On mobile, open You > Your Friends > Friend Requests.

Tap the X beside an unwanted outgoing request.

Retry the desired request after freeing space.

If you already have 1,000 accepted friends, open Home > Friends on desktop or in a browser. Accepted friendships have a separate cap from pending requests, and Nitro does not increase it.

Select an existing friendship you no longer want to keep.

Choose More > Remove Friend.

Retry accepting the desired friendship.

Look for a request that already arrived

Ask the recipient to check for a delivered request before treating a missing notification as a failure.

  1. 1.On desktop or in a browser, open Direct Messages > Friends > Pending.
  2. 2.Check View spam requests if the request is missing from the main pending view.
  3. 3.Select the checkmark beside the incoming request to accept it.
  4. 4.On mobile, open the Notifications tab. If the request isn’t listed there, tap the Friend Requests icon in the upper-right corner, then tap Accept beside the incoming request.
  5. 5.To restore alerts from someone you have ignored, open that person’s profile and choose ellipsis > Unignore.

Test the app and connection

When Discord is malfunctioning beyond this one request, close the app completely. On Windows, check Task Manager for remaining Discord processes. Wait 30 seconds before reopening Discord.

In a desktop browser, open Direct Messages > Friends > Add Friend. Enter the current username, then select Send Friend Request. Success there points toward an app problem; account restrictions and recipient permissions apply in either client.

Check Discord’s official status dashboard for active incidents and API availability. If a relevant incident is active, retry after recovery. For broader connection problems, test your connection or try another available network.

If the client continues malfunctioning, obtain the current desktop installer from Discord’s download page. For mobile installation problems, reinstall Discord from the official app store. Reinstalling does not remove a block or change the recipient’s permissions.

Contact Discord if the problem persists

If the username, permissions, restrictions, and limits do not explain the failure, submit the technical problem to Discord Support.

Open the Discord Help Center.

Select Sign in.

If you need a separate Help Center account, create one.

Activate that account before continuing.

Select Submit a request.

Choose Help & Support or Bug Reporting, depending on the issue.

Provide the exact error, your platform, the steps that reproduce the problem, and screenshots. Include what happens when you try from another client.

Select Submit. Support can investigate the issue, but it cannot manually create a friendship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send a Discord friend request directly from a server message?

Yes. On desktop or in a browser, right-click the person’s server message and select Add Friend. Mobile requires opening the person’s profile instead.

Can someone with a private Discord profile receive friend requests?

Yes. Private profiles can receive friend requests. Profile visibility, DM permissions, and notification settings are separate from permission to receive a friend request.

What happens if someone has too many incoming friend requests?

Discord caps incoming requests at 1,500. When that limit is exceeded, Discord automatically prunes the incoming requests to 1,000.
