Your cursor disappears in Google Docs, and a quick edit turns into a guessing game. The next move depends on what’s missing: the mouse pointer or the blinking insertion cursor that marks where you type. Start with a reload, then use the visibility settings and browser tests below to narrow it down.

Reload the document and update Chrome

Check that your edits have saved.

In Chrome, press Ctrl+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+R on Mac, to reload the document.

If the cursor stays missing, reload without cached content using Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+R on Mac. This tests for a temporary rendering failure.

On Windows or Mac, open More > Help > About Google Chrome to let Chrome check for updates.

Select Relaunch if offered.

On Linux, update Chrome through your package manager. Chromebook browser updates come through ChromeOS.

If reloading and updating don’t help, try the pointer settings below for a missing mouse arrow or text-selection I-beam. For a missing blinking insertion cursor, skip to the browser tests.

Make the mouse pointer easier to see

If the pointer blends into the page, start with its appearance. On Windows 11, press Windows+U to reach the accessibility settings, then open Mouse pointer and touch.

Choose black or inverted under Mouse pointer style. This changes the mouse pointer, including its text-selection shape, rather than the blinking insertion cursor.

For a pointer that disappears while typing, clear Hide pointer while typing under Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options > Visibility, then select OK. The browser determines whether Docs follows this setting.

On Mac, increase Pointer size under Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Pointer. This adjusts the mouse pointer, not the insertion cursor.

Test Incognito and isolate extensions

A private Chrome session gives you a useful comparison before you start switching extensions off.

  1. 1.Open More > New Incognito window.
  2. 2.Sign in with the account that has document access and open the same file. If the cursor works here, investigate extensions and stored site data. Extensions explicitly allowed in Incognito still run.
  3. 3.Return to your regular window and open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  4. 4.Turn off one extension, then reload Docs. Repeat individually, starting with extensions that change page appearance, cursors, or editing. Unpinning an extension does not disable it.
  5. 5.Leave the culprit disabled, or select Remove and confirm Remove to uninstall it.

Check graphics acceleration

This targets browser-rendering trouble; it is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed cursor repair.

In desktop Chrome, enter chrome://settings/system in the address bar.

Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.

Restart Chrome.

Reopen the document to test the cursor.

Restore the setting if it makes no difference or causes problems on other sites.

For the same test in desktop Edge, enter edge://settings/system in the address bar.

Turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.

Restart Edge.

Reopen Docs to test the cursor.

Restore acceleration if the change does not help.

Compare another browser and document

If the cursor keeps disappearing, test the same document elsewhere. This helps separate a browser problem from trouble with one file.

Open another updated browser, such as Firefox, Edge, or Safari on Mac.

Sign in with the same authorized account.

Open the affected document.

Compare its cursor behavior with a new document. Note whether the problem follows one file or affects both.

For a Firefox-specific problem, choose menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode… > Restart.

Select Open. This temporarily disables extensions, themes, hardware acceleration, and other customizations.

Test Docs. A working cursor here narrows the investigation to those features without identifying a single culprit.

Quit Firefox.

Reopen Firefox normally to leave Troubleshoot Mode.

For Safari, open Safari > Settings > Extensions.

Deselect one extension.

Test Docs after each change, repeating with extensions individually.

Clear Chrome’s cache before deleting cookies

If extension testing hasn’t helped, start with cached files and leave unrelated browsing data alone.

  1. 1.Open More > Delete browsing data.
  2. 2.Choose All time as the time range.
  3. 3.Select Cached images and files and leave other categories unselected.
  4. 4.Select Delete data, then reopen Docs and test the cursor.
  5. 5.If the cache-only test fails, repeat with Cookies and other site data selected as well. Sign in again if prompted.

Try a separate Chrome profile

On Windows, Mac, or Linux, select Profile > Add Chrome profile to create a separate browser profile.

Set it up without importing extensions or browser settings.

Sign in to the Docs website.

Open the affected document to test the cursor.

If targeted fixes have failed and you want to reset your original profile, switch back to it. A reset affects browser settings and customizations but retains bookmarks and saved passwords.

Open More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults.

Select Reset settings.

Retest Docs before enabling extensions or restoring custom settings.

Keep the separate profile free of imported customizations during testing so the comparison stays useful.

Handle a cursor that is still missing

If the problem survives these tests, focus on where the cursor disappears. Missing editing access, trouble with one document, and a pointer missing across the computer each need a different response.

If you cannot edit and the document offers Request edit access, select it to ask the owner for Editor access. Pointer appearance settings cannot grant editing permission.

For a problem limited to one document, right-click the file in Google Drive and select Make a copy, provided copying is permitted. The copy does not preserve all original features, including version history.

Open the copy to test its cursor.

To keep working, open the document in a browser or on a device that passes the cursor test.

For a Windows mouse pointer that is missing outside Docs too, reconnect the mouse or its USB receiver. Continue with device troubleshooting for this system-wide symptom.

On a work or school device, ask your administrator for help if enforced browser settings block the graphics acceleration test.

For a reproducible Docs problem, open Help > Help us improve.

Describe which element disappears, the mouse pointer or insertion cursor, along with your browser, operating system, and whether the problem occurs in another browser or document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google Docs have a setting to show the cursor?

Google's Docs Editors Help doesn't document a show-cursor toggle, Gemini cursor-repair command, or personal Google Account cursor setting. Its Tools > Accessibility settings focus on screen reader and braille support, so use your browser and operating system pointer settings instead.

Will increasing Windows text-cursor thickness fix the blinking cursor in Docs?

Windows 11 Text cursor thickness and Text cursor indicator controls, under Windows+U > Text cursor, are accessibility aids for making the text cursor easier to see. Microsoft doesn't document whether they track the Google Docs insertion cursor in a browser, so treat them as a visibility test rather than a guaranteed fix.

Why does my iPad pointer disappear when I stop using it?

iPadOS hides a connected mouse or trackpad pointer after inactivity. Move the mouse or touch the trackpad to restore it. To change this behavior, adjust Automatically Hide Pointer under Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. This setting does not control the text insertion cursor.

Should I reinstall Chrome if the cursor keeps disappearing?

Reserve reinstallation for persistent browser problems after targeted troubleshooting. Reinstalling Chrome while keeping a faulty profile leaves that source of trouble in place. Keep profile data unless you intend to remove local browser information.
