Fix a Canva QR code that is not working by improving its size and contrast, correcting its destination URL, or enabling QR recognition on your phone. If scanning opens an access error, check the destination’s sharing settings; if Canva cannot create or edit the code, troubleshoot the editor.
The short version
- Image quality: Use a code at least 2 × 2 cm with contrasting opaque colors and clear margins.
- Wrong destination: Replace an incorrect static code or edit a dynamic code’s URL.
- Phone scanning: Use your phone’s camera or dedicated QR scanner and keep the complete code visible.
- Canva loading: Try another supported browser when the editor freezes or the QR app fails to load.

Make the QR code easier to scan
Start with the design when your phone cannot recognize the QR image. Keep the code at least 2 × 2 cm, use contrasting opaque colors, and leave its surroundings unobstructed. Preserve blank margins four QR modules wide around the code.
If the code remains difficult to read, regenerate it with a shorter URL. Keep the replacement large enough to scan, with the same contrast and blank margins. If the downloaded image is blurry, check the export settings below.
Check your phone’s QR scanner
On an iPhone or iPad, open Camera from the Home Screen, Lock Screen or Control Center, frame the complete QR code, then tap the detected link. On a supported iPhone, you can also open the camera using Camera Control. Keep the entire code in the frame.
For Apple’s dedicated scanner, open Control Center and select Scan Code. If that control is missing in the current Control Center interface, touch and hold the background, select Add a Control, then choose Scan Code and tap outside the gallery. Open the scanner, frame the code and tap its link.
On a Pixel with these camera controls, open Camera > Settings > More settings > Camera scan suggestions and turn on Camera scan suggestions. Frame the entire code and tap the detected link; taking a photo is unnecessary. Alternatively, swipe down to Quick Settings and select Scan QR code, checking additional buttons or using the pencil icon to add it if missing. Point the scanner at the code.
For a Pixel that still struggles to scan, clean the lens with a soft cloth and hold the phone steady. Improve the lighting, avoid glare and shadows, and move closer while keeping the complete code visible.
On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet with these Camera controls, open Camera and select PHOTO. If recognition fails, open the Camera Settings icon, turn on Scan QR codes, and return to the viewfinder to frame the code. The layout varies by One UI version.
For Samsung’s dedicated scanner, swipe down with two fingers to open Quick settings, select Scan QR code, and aim at the code. Enable the flashlight if needed. To scan a saved QR image, open Gallery from that scanner and select the image.
Correct the destination URL
An incorrect static code needs a replacement containing the corrected address. In Canva, open Apps, search for QR code, select Static QR codes, and enter the corrected address in URL. Finish creating the code, then replace printed copies that contain the incorrect code.
The alternative creation route is Elements, where you search for QR code and select Create static. Enter the corrected address in URL to create the replacement code. Static QR creation is available on all Canva plans.
For a native Canva dynamic code on web or mobile, select the code and choose Edit. Correct the URL and select Save. This updates its destination without requiring a reprint.
Fix access to a linked Canva design
When scanning succeeds but the destination Canva design shows an access error, check that design’s sharing permissions. For content intended for public viewing, an owner or editor with sharing rights should open the design, select Share, choose Anyone with the link, and select Can view. Select Copy link to get the viewing link.
Use the copied link as the QR destination. Update the URL through Edit for a dynamic code, or create a replacement static code with that address.
If a Canva Enterprise destination is restricted by organization policy, ask your administrator to review external-sharing and approved-domain restrictions. Those controls can restrict access to the destination design even after the QR image scans successfully.
Export a sharper image and reprint it
In Canva, select Share > Download, then choose PDF Print for printing or PNG for digital distribution. When you imported a QR image, use its original high-resolution version. Exporting a blurry source as PDF Print cannot restore missing detail.
On Canva Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofits, choose PNG or JPG and increase Size and Quality where available. The controls vary by format. For social distribution, choose PNG and scan the distributed image to check it because social platforms can compress it.
To print the corrected design through Canva, open Share > See all, then select Use my printer. Another route is File > Print, then select Use my printer. Configure the printer settings and select Print. These routes apply to desktop and mobile apps.
Check a dynamic code’s expiry and editing access
For native dynamic codes on Canva Business, Enterprise or Nonprofit, select the code and check its expiry date in the left panel. Clear or change that date if you need the code to remain active.
If someone else owns the code and you need editing access on those plans, ask the owner to select it and turn on the toggle that lets other editors of the design edit the QR code. Otherwise, ask the owner to repair the code.
Update codes made with Hovercode
For a dynamic code created through Hovercode’s Canva app, open Hovercode’s Dynamic QR codes app and select My codes. Choose the affected code and update its destination. These codes use Hovercode’s controls rather than Canva’s native dynamic-code settings.
To manage the code through a connected account, open the Hovercode Canva app and select Connect Hovercode Account. After connecting, manage the code on Hovercode.com.
Get the Canva editor loading again
For editor or QR-app loading failures, open Canva Status through Canva’s crash and freeze troubleshooting help before changing the design. Check for a relevant incident and retry after it is resolved.
For a web editor stuck on a loading or white screen, close every Canva browser tab and open Canva in a new tab, signing in if necessary. If the editor freezes, crashes or still fails to load, open the same design in an updated Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Microsoft Edge browser, or on another device. Close unused apps and tabs before retrying QR generation.
To update desktop Chrome on supported Windows or macOS versions, select More > Help > About Google Chrome. Allow the update check to finish, select Relaunch when offered, and reopen Canva. If you need to install Chrome as an alternative browser, get it from Google’s official Chrome product page.
To check for browser-session or extension interference in desktop Chrome, select More > New Incognito window, then open Canva there. The keyboard alternative is Ctrl + Shift + N on Windows, Linux or ChromeOS, or Command + Shift + N on Mac.
If JavaScript is blocked in desktop Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript. Select Sites can use JavaScript and reload Canva.
Clearing cached browser files deletes the cached images and files selected in Chrome. For persistent Canva loading problems in desktop Chrome, select More > Delete browsing data, choose All time, and select Cached images and files. Leave unrelated data categories unchecked, select Delete data, and reopen Canva.
Fix connection problems or use the desktop app
For Canva loading or login errors, use a stable connection. Canva recommends turning an active VPN off and back on for slow loading. For Canva’s security-reasons error, try another Wi-Fi network, turn off the VPN, and retry in Chrome. These steps address editor access rather than an incorrect encoded URL.
If a restricted home, school or workplace network prevents Canva or its editor apps from operating, ask the network administrator to apply Canva’s documented firewall allowlist. For the locked-editor connection error, ask the administrator to permit the WebSocket connection specified in Canva’s WebSocket guidance.
Canva recommends its Mac or Windows app as an alternative when browser loading problems persist. Open Canva’s official download page and choose Download Canva for Windows or Download Canva for Mac for your supported operating system.
Uninstalling Canva removes the installed desktop app. If an existing Windows 11 installation needs reinstalling, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Canva, open More, and select Uninstall. Reinstall it from Canva’s official download page.
Frequently Asked Questions
