Your Minecraft beacon is built, but there's no beam. Or the beam is shining and you're still missing the effect you wanted. Start with the base and work through the checks below to fix construction, power selection, and range problems in Java or Bedrock.

Start with a solid pyramid

Replace invalid pyramid materials with full blocks of iron, gold, emerald, diamond, or netherite. More expensive materials do not increase beacon power.

Build a filled 3×3 layer beneath the beacon. All nine positions need a valid block, including the center.

Place the beacon directly above the center of that layer.

Repair additional layers underneath so they form centered, filled 5×5, 7×7, and 9×9 squares, in that order downward. Fill every interior space and corner. A complete one-, two-, three-, or four-level pyramid uses 9, 34, 83, or 164 material blocks.

For a shared installation, check that each beacon has valid layers beneath its own position.

Clear the column above the beacon

This fixes a beacon with a blocked upward beam path.

Remove obstructions directly above the beacon, including blocks far overhead. Underground beacons need a clear upward path too.

If you cannot locate the obstruction, test the beacon outdoors with an empty vertical column to the sky.

Remove other decorative covering blocks during troubleshooting.

Use stained glass above the beacon when you want to color the beam while keeping it working.

Select an effect when the beam is already visible

A visible beam alone does not mean a power is active. If the beam is shining but you have no effect, check the selection and payment.

Interact with the beacon to open its interface.

Insert one iron ingot, gold ingot, emerald, diamond, or netherite ingot into the payment slot.

Select an available effect under Primary Power. Bedrock's Pocket interface calls this heading Primary.

Confirm with the green checkmark, labeled Done in Java. Changing the effect later requires another payment.

Unlock missing powers with more levels

Your pyramid's height determines the available powers. One level offers Speed or Haste. Two levels add Resistance and Jump Boost; three add Strength.

Expand the pyramid to four complete levels to unlock the secondary choice: Regeneration I or level II of your selected primary effect.

Reopen the beacon interface after changing the pyramid.

For Haste II, select Haste as the primary power.

Choose its Haste II secondary option. Bedrock's Pocket layout labels the secondary heading Secondary.

Insert one of the accepted payment items.

Confirm with the green checkmark, labeled Done in Java.

If the selected power still does not reach you, try the nearby range test below.

Test the effect close to the base

A nearby test separates an activation problem from a worksite outside the beacon's coverage.

  1. 1.Stand beside the beacon.
  2. 2.Wait at least four seconds for the next effect refresh.
  3. 3.Check whether the selected effect activates while you remain nearby. Horizontal range is 20 blocks with one pyramid level, 30 with two, 40 with three, and 50 with four.
  4. 4.If it works beside the base but disappears at your worksite, move the beacon, expand its pyramid, or add another beacon. Seeing the beam from farther away does not mean its effects reach you.

Separate a distant missing beam from missing effects

Beam visibility and effect coverage have different limits. If the beacon works beside its base but disappears as you travel away, check visibility.

In Java, approach until the beacon's location is within your client's render distance. Since Java 1.21.5, beacon rendering extends beyond the old 16-chunk limit, up to the client render distance. Maximum beam height is 2,048 blocks.

In Bedrock, move close enough for the beacon's chunk to load. Worlds versioned 1.21.90 or later render beacons from any loaded chunk, also with a maximum beam height of 2,048 blocks.

If the beam is still missing beside the beacon, return to the pyramid and overhead-column checks.

Update Java for incorrect effect switching

A known bug in Java versions before 26.2 leaves a secondary beacon effect active after you switch the primary effect.

Open Minecraft Launcher.

Select Latest Release.

Click Play to launch the current release, which includes the fix introduced in Java 26.2.

If the problem happens on a multiplayer server, ask the host to run a version containing the fix.

Use separate, correctly configured beacons when you need different primary effects. Older tutorials that promise two different primary effects from one beacon rely on the bug fixed in Java 26.2.

Isolate interfering Bedrock packs

Use a copy of your world for pack testing so you can isolate the conflict before changing the original. Leave the copied world before changing its packs.

Inspect Resource Packs and Behavior Packs in the copied world's settings for suspect active packs. Check globally applied resource packs too.

Choose Deactivate for a suspect active pack. Reload the world to test the beacon.

Repeat the test with individual packs, leaving the world before each change. Restore packs individually to identify which one affects the beacon.

Resolve permissions or report a repeatable failure

If you cannot interact with a beacon or repair its pyramid in Bedrock multiplayer, ask the host to check your permission level. Visitor access is for observing; Member access allows building, mining, and interaction.

Ask the host to grant Member access where appropriate.

For a beacon that still fails after the construction, activation, and range checks, reproduce the problem in an unmodified test world.

Record your edition and version, pyramid layout, overhead column, selected effects, and player position.

If the same setup still fails in that test world, follow your edition's release page's Minecraft issue tracker link to search for or report the defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I update Minecraft Bedrock on a phone or Xbox?

On iPhone or Android, open the App Store or Google Play, search for Minecraft, and install any offered update. On Xbox, select Minecraft in your games library, open Manage game & add-ons, then Updates. Updating is a general troubleshooting step, not a universal Bedrock beacon fix.

What should I try if an Add-On still causes problems?

Close and restart Minecraft. Create a separate test world and test each Add-On individually. When several packs modify the same asset, check their priority. These are general Add-On troubleshooting steps.

Will reinstalling Minecraft Launcher fix my beacon?

Reinstalling the launcher does not correct an invalid pyramid or an incorrectly configured beacon. There is no established launcher reinstall remedy for those problems.
