Forgotten your NETGEAR extender password? Start with a saved device or the extender’s settings to retrieve it, then use recovery or a factory reset if you’re locked out. The Wi-Fi password connects your devices; the administrator password opens the extender’s settings. Here’s how to handle each without resetting more than you need to.
Find the Wi-Fi password on a saved device
On a Windows 11 PC connected to the extender, open Settings > Network & internet > Properties.
Select Show beside Wi-Fi network password.
For another saved network, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks.
Select the extender’s network.
Select Show to reveal its password.
On an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 16.1 or later, open Settings > Wi-Fi.
Tap the extender network’s Info button.
Tap Password.
Authenticate to reveal the saved password.
On a Mac running macOS Sequoia or later, open Passwords > Wi-Fi.
Select the saved extender network.
Hover over Password to reveal it.
Tip: choose the extender’s saved network entry so you retrieve the password for the connection you actually need.
Check the password inside your extender’s settings
Connect your phone or computer to the extender over Wi-Fi, or connect a computer by Ethernet.
Sign in at www.mywifiext.net with the extender’s administrator credentials. If the hostname fails, use the extender’s actual assigned IP address.
Open Settings > Wireless.
Read WiFi Password under General. Same as existing network password means you need the router’s Wi-Fi password; Use a different password exposes Security Type and Network Key, with the separate extender password shown as the network key. Labels vary by model.
Change the extender’s Wi-Fi password
For a separate extender password, sign in at www.mywifiext.net while connected to the extender. On supported models, independent password changes require One WiFi Name to be disabled.
Open Settings > Wireless. NETGEAR’s current mesh-extender instructions use that label, and list the EX7000 among the models they cover; the EX7000’s own manual instead puts the entry at Settings > WiFi behind the Menu icon. Either route opens the same WiFi Settings page.
Enter your replacement password in WiFi Password.
Select SAVE.
Reconnect your devices using the new password.
With One WiFi Name enabled, the router controls the shared Wi-Fi settings. The extender’s Wireless page cannot independently change that password.
Sign in to your main router’s administration webpage or supported app.
Change the router’s Wi-Fi password there. The exact menu depends on the router’s manufacturer and model.
If the extender fails to reconnect after the change, rerun Status > SMART SETUP in its browser interface using the network-selection and password prompts. The wizard’s screens vary by model, and older extenders label it differently: on an EX2700, sign in and select Setup Wizard, then follow its network and password prompts.
Retrieve a saved administrator login
A Wi-Fi password entered at the administrator sign-in screen is the wrong credential.
Use the administrator credentials you created during extender setup. Your MyNETGEAR account is a third, separate login; resetting it does not change the extender’s administrator or Wi-Fi password.
If you previously saved the extender login in desktop Chrome, open More > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager.
Under Passwords, select the saved entry matching the extender’s hostname or IP address.
Select Show password.
Authenticate when prompted.
The EX2700’s old admin/password defaults and Maintenance > Set Password menu belong to a legacy interface. Current setup instructions require you to create administrator credentials, so those defaults are not a universal login.
Recover the administrator login with security questions
While connected to the extender, open http://mywifiext.local/ or its assigned IP address. The EXS25 supports recovery through security questions configured earlier.
Select Username & Password Help. The EX7000 also uses this recovery option.
Submit your previously configured security answers with NEXT. The administrator credentials appear.
Select BACK to return to sign-in. If recovery was never configured or you cannot answer the questions, a factory reset is the remaining route below.
Factory reset an extender you cannot access
A factory reset erases customized credentials and settings, so you’ll need to set up the extender again.
- 1.Power on the extender and wait for a steady Power LED.
- 2.Use a paper clip to hold the recessed Reset or Factory Reset button until the Power LED blinks. NETGEAR’s general instructions allow up to 15 seconds; the EAX80 and EXS25 specify approximately seven seconds. Follow your model’s timing and LED instructions.
- 3.Release the button.
- 4.Wait for startup to finish before beginning setup.
Reconnect after the reset
A factory reset removes the configuration that connected your extender to the router.
Join NETGEAR_EXT from your computer or phone. Depending on the model, this initial network uses no password or the password “password.”
Open mywifiext.com in your browser.
If the New extender setup page appears, select NEW EXTENDER SETUP. If NETGEAR Genie starts searching for local networks instead, continue with the next step.
Create your new administrator credentials.
Configure your security questions and answers.
Select your router’s Wi-Fi network.
Enter the router’s Wi-Fi password.
Choose the extended network’s credentials as prompted.
Select NEXT.
Reconnect to the extended network using its configured password.
Select CONTINUE to finish setup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will unplugging the extender reset its password?
No. Unplugging and restarting the extender does not erase its credentials. Uninstalling Nighthawk or deleting a saved browser password also leaves the extender’s passwords unchanged.
How do I remove the old extender password from Windows 11?
Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Select the extender network. Choose Forget. Reconnect using the new password. This replaces the PC’s saved connection; it does not reset the extender.
How do I reset my MyNETGEAR account password?
Visit my.netgear.com. Select Forgot password?. Enter your account email. Complete reCAPTCHA. Select Reset Password. Enter the emailed verification code. Enter your new password twice. Select Submit. This changes only your MyNETGEAR account password.
Can WPS recover my extender password?
WPS does not reveal or recover the administrator password. On compatible extenders and routers, WPS setup connects the extender to the router and makes the extended network use the router’s Wi-Fi password.
