To dye leather armor in Minecraft, combine a leather armor piece with dye in a crafting grid in Java Edition, or use the armor on a cauldron of dyed water in Bedrock Edition. You can color leather caps, tunics, pants and boots, repeating the process for each piece.
The short version
- Java Edition: Put one leather armor piece and dye in separate crafting slots, then take the colored output.
- Bedrock Edition: Fill a cauldron with water, add dye, then use your held leather armor on it.
- Fresh colors: Wash dyed armor in a cauldron of ordinary water before starting over.
- Custom Java shades: Combine dyes in a crafting grid or create an item with an exact RGB color using a command with the required permission.
| Option | Edition | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory crafting | Java | Combine one armor piece with up to three dyes |
| Crafting table | Java | Combine one armor piece with up to eight dyes |
| Dyed water | Bedrock | Use leather armor on a dyed-water cauldron |
| Wash before recoloring | Bedrock | Use ordinary water, then a dyed-water cauldron |
| Wash before recoloring | Java | Use a water cauldron, then a crafting grid |
| Exact RGB command | Java with command permission | Create a new armor piece with a specified color |
| Browser dye mixer | Java helper | Prepare a dye recipe or generate a command |
Gather the supplies for your edition
For Java Edition, have your leather armor and chosen dyes ready, plus a crafting table if you want to combine more than three dyes at once. For Bedrock Edition, gather your leather armor, a cauldron, a water bucket and your chosen dye. If you want to remove an existing color first, you also need a cauldron filled with ordinary, undyed water.
Dye armor in your Java inventory
In Survival mode, open your inventory by pressing E with the default keyboard controls. Put one leather armor piece in a slot under Crafting and one dye in a separate slot, then take the dyed armor from the output slot. Repeat those steps for each piece you want to color.
The inventory’s 2×2 grid holds one armor piece and up to three dyes, with each dye placed in a separate slot. Adding more than one dye mixes the colors, and already-dyed armor contributes its existing color to the mixture. Wash the piece first if you want to start without its previous color.
Mix more dyes at a Java crafting table
A crafting table gives you room for one leather armor piece and up to eight dyes. Use the table to open Crafting, then place the armor anywhere in the 3×3 grid. Add one to eight dyes in separate slots and take the resulting armor from the output.
You can put the dyed piece back into the grid with additional dyes to blend its color further. Its current color remains part of the new mixture, so wash the armor first when you want to discard that previous color.
Use a dyed water cauldron in Bedrock
Place the cauldron, hold the water bucket and use it on the cauldron with your assigned interaction control. Next, hold your chosen dye and use it on the water-filled cauldron. Once the water is dyed, hold a leather armor piece and use it on the cauldron.
Repeat with the other pieces you want to color, replenishing the water and dye as necessary. These actions happen directly in the world, with no dyeing menu or confirmation to select.
Wash off a color before starting again
In Java Edition, fill a cauldron with water, hold the dyed leather armor and use it on the cauldron to remove its color. Return the cleaned piece to your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table, then combine it with the new dye and take the output.
For Bedrock Edition, fill a separate cauldron with ordinary, undyed water. Hold your dyed armor and use it on that cauldron to wash off its color. Apply the replacement color by using the cleaned armor on a dyed-water cauldron.
Create an exact color with a Java command
For a precise RGB color in Java Edition, you can create a new armor piece with a command. This requires cheats or appropriate server operator permissions to be enabled already. The command creates a new item rather than recoloring armor you currently hold.
Open chat and enter the following command to receive a pure-red leather tunic. The number 16711680 is the decimal RGB value for that color.
/give @s minecraft:leather_chestplate[minecraft:dyed_color=16711680] 1Replace leather_chestplate with leather_helmet, leather_leggings or leather_boots to create another piece. Replace 16711680 with your desired decimal RGB value to change its color.
Plan a Java color with a browser mixer
Open the Leather Armor Dye Mixer to prepare a Java dye mixture. Click the dye icons to build a mixture, or enter a target color under Target colour and select Find dyes. Follow the displayed recipe in Minecraft, using a crafting table when you need more space than the inventory grid provides.
Alternatively, select Copy /give and execute the generated command in Java Edition with command permission. The helper prepares recipes and commands; it does not directly modify your game. You still need to complete the crafting steps or enter the command in Minecraft.
Fix dyeing and command problems
In Bedrock Edition, use the dyed-water cauldron sequence described above. Add the dye to the water before using the armor on it. Ordinary, undyed water washes color off dyed armor, so use a separate cauldron for cleaning.
If a Java mixture keeps picking up your armor’s previous shade, wash the piece before adding the new dyes. If you run out of inventory crafting slots, move to a crafting table for room to use up to eight dyes with one armor piece.
If a Java command fails, check that you have command permission and that the color component uses the direct-value format [minecraft:dyed_color=16711680]. Mojang removed the older RGB wrapper in Java 1.21.5, so replace a wrapped component with the current format shown above. Without command permission, use Java’s crafting-grid method to dye an existing leather armor piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you dye leather armor in both Survival and Creative?
Yes, Java’s crafting-table dyeing method works in both Survival and Creative. Bedrock’s dyed-water cauldron method also works in both modes.
Which method should you use on a phone or console?
Use the Bedrock cauldron method on Android, iOS, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. On Windows, choose the steps for the edition you are playing: Java uses crafting, while Bedrock uses dyed water. Java Edition on macOS and Linux also uses crafting.
Can you dye leather horse armor and wolf armor too?
Yes, in Bedrock Edition you can use Leather Horse Armor and Wolf Armor on a dyed-water cauldron. You can also remove their color by using them on a cauldron of ordinary, undyed water.
Do you need to download anything to dye leather armor?
No download is required for these dyeing procedures. You can also use the optional color mixer directly in your browser.
