Instagram search suggestions can stick around after you look up an account, hashtag, place, tag, or audio. Start with the Search tab, then use the deeper account controls if the visible list does not clear.

Use this first when you want the suggestions under the Instagram search bar gone.

  1. 1.Open the Instagram app and tap Search.
  2. 2.Tap the search bar.
  3. 3.Tap See all.
  4. 4.Tap Clear All in the top right.
  5. 5.Tap Clear All again to confirm.

Remove One Search Suggestion

You do not have to wipe the full list when only one result is bothering you. In the Instagram app, tap Search, tap the search bar, then tap See all if Instagram shows it.

Find the account, hashtag, audio, tag, or place you want to delete. Tap Remove or the X next to that item, and Instagram removes that visible recent search from the signed-in account.

If this method fails, clear the same item from Your activity instead.

Find Recent Searches in Your Activity

The most common reason to use Your activity is that the Search tab list is not visible on your phone.

Open Instagram and tap Profile or your profile picture.

Tap Menu, then open Your activity.

Go to Recent searches.

Tap the X or Remove next to one search, or tap Clear all and then Clear all again to remove the full list.

Use Accounts Center for Search History

Open Instagram and tap Profile or your profile picture.

Tap Menu.

Choose Accounts Center.

Open Your information and permissions.

Tap Search history.

Choose the Instagram account or profile you want to clean up.

Tap Remove next to an individual search, or choose Clear all searches or Clear all and confirm.

Check the selected Instagram profile before clearing anything.

Shorten How Long Instagram Keeps Searches

This applies when Keep searches for appears in Accounts Center. It is for reducing how long searches stay around, not for instantly wiping the whole list by itself, so pair it with clearing your Instagram search history when you want the list gone right now.

Open Accounts Center.

Go to Your information and permissions, then Search history.

Select the Instagram account you want to manage.

Choose Keep searches for.

Pick the shorter retention option shown, such as 3 days, 7 days, or 14 days.

Use Clear all searches as well when you want the current list removed right away.

Delete Instagram Search Suggestions on the Web

On a computer, go to instagram.com and log in. Open Search in the left sidebar to see recent searches for the signed-in account.

Click the X next to one recent search to remove only that item. To clear the whole visible list, click Clear all, then confirm with Clear all.

You can also use Accounts Center on the web. Go to More, Settings, See more in Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, and Search history, then choose the Instagram account and remove individual searches or use Clear all searches.

Reset Search and Explore Recommendations

The most common reason Search and Explore still look wrong is that Instagram recommendations are not the same thing as your Recent searches list.

Open Instagram and go to Profile or your profile picture.

Tap Menu.

Under What you see, tap Content preferences.

Choose Reset suggested content, tap Next, and follow the on-screen instructions.

For one suggested post in Feed, Reels, Explore, or Search, tap Options, then Not Interested.

To filter by words, tap Not Interested, choose Don't suggest posts with certain words, then enter the word, phrase, or emoji.

Ignore Older Clear Search History Menus

Some older Instagram instructions point to Settings, Security, and Clear search history in the mobile app, or to Privacy and Security, View Account Data, and Search History on desktop. Those are legacy paths, so do not rely on them as the current fix.

Use the current Search tab, Your activity, or Accounts Center paths instead.

If this method fails, you are probably looking at an outdated menu path, so open Accounts Center and go to Search history.

Frequently Asked Questions
