An unwanted Facebook picture can be your upload, part of an old post, or a photo someone else tagged you in. Start with the route that matches the picture below, whether you want one photo gone, an entire album deleted, or a tag removed. Direct photo and album deletion is permanent, so keep a copy of anything you want before confirming.

Delete a picture you uploaded

This permanently removes an individual photo you uploaded. Open the photo you want to delete.

On a computer, click Options. Choose Delete Photo. Click Delete to confirm. Facebook says a photo deleted this way cannot be recovered.

On Android, open Options on the photo. Tap Delete photo. Confirm with Delete.

On an iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the open photo until its menu appears. Tap Delete Photo. Select Delete to finish.

In a mobile browser or Facebook Lite, open Options at the upper right of the photo. Select Delete. Confirm with Yes.

The Basic Mobile Browser interface does not support photo deletion. For the Basic Mobile Browser interface, switch to the Facebook app or desktop website to use the corresponding steps above.

For profile pictures and cover photos, open the album

Facebook keeps these pictures in automatic albums. You can delete individual photos from Profile pictures, Cover photos, and Mobile uploads, but you cannot delete those albums themselves.

Go to your profile. Open Photos. Select Albums. Open the album containing the unwanted picture.

Select the photo. On a computer or Android, open Options; on an iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the photo to open its menu. Select Delete Photo on a computer, iPhone, or iPad, or Delete photo on Android. Confirm with Delete.

Repeat the deletion sequence for each unwanted picture. In a mobile browser or Facebook Lite, use the Options, Delete, and Yes sequence above.

When someone else uploaded the picture

A tag does not give you control over the uploader’s photo. Removing your tag removes your association with the picture; the original stays on Facebook.

On a computer, open the photo. Click Options. Select Remove Tag. Click Ok to confirm.

For a photo that violates Facebook’s policies, open the picture’s Options menu. Select Report photo. Choose the issue that applies. Complete the reporting prompts.

Reporting requests a review and does not guarantee removal. If removing the tag does not solve the problem, ask the uploader to delete the picture. The uploader controls whether to remove it.

Remove an entire album you created

Deleting an album permanently deletes its pictures; Profile pictures, Cover photos, and Mobile uploads must be cleared picture by picture.

On a computer, click your profile picture. Click your profile name. Open Photos. Open Albums.

Select the album. Choose Options. Choose Delete album. Confirm with Delete Album.

On Android, open Menu. Open Photos. Open Albums.

Open the album you created. Select Edit album. Select Delete album. Confirm with Delete.

On iPhone, open Menu. Tap your name. Open Photos. Open Albums.

Select the unwanted album. Tap Edit album. Tap Delete Album. Confirm with Delete.

Keep the post and remove its pictures

Use post editing when you want to keep the rest of your post. This photo-removal workflow excludes posts shared from photo albums or third-party apps.

On a computer, open Options on your post. Choose Edit post. To remove all its photos, hover over the photos. Click Remove.

To remove just one picture from a group instead, hover over the photos. Choose Edit All. Hover over the target picture, then click Remove. Finish either desktop route with Save.

On Android, open the post’s Options menu. Tap Edit post. Select the unwanted picture if the post contains several.

Tap Remove. Choose Done. Tap SAVE.

To delete the entire post on a computer, click your profile picture. Select your name. Locate the post on your profile.

Open its Options menu. Select Delete post. This removes the whole post, including its text.

Find older photo posts in Activity Log

Activity Log helps you find older pictures and posts, with deletion controls that depend on the content and device.

On Android or iPhone, open your profile. Tap Options below your profile picture. Tap Activity Log. Select Manage Your Posts.

To narrow the results, use Filters with Categories, Date, or People. Open an eligible item’s Options menu. Select Move to trash. Confirm with Move to trash.

These apps also support selecting one or more eligible items, but the bulk controls vary by layout. Not every Activity Log item qualifies. Eligible trashed content is automatically deleted after 30 days unless restored or deleted sooner.

For bulk cleanup in Facebook Lite, open your profile. Select Options. Select Activity Log.

Select Manage Activity. Select the circles beside the eligible content you want to remove. Tap Trash.

On a computer, click your profile picture. Open Settings & Privacy. Open Activity Log.

Select Your Facebook activity. Select Posts. Select Your posts, photos and videos. Use Date to narrow the results.

Open Options beside an item. Choose the available action: Delete permanently removes it, while Move to trash places eligible content in the 30-day trash period.

Empty the trash when you are ready

Open your profile in the Android, iPhone, or Facebook Lite app. Select Options. Open Activity Log.

Choose Trash. Check the content you want to remove permanently. Select Delete. Confirm with Delete.

Content left in trash is automatically deleted after 30 days unless restored. Tip: Review your selection before confirming, because permanent deletion cannot be undone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does hiding or archiving a Facebook picture delete it?

No. Hiding a post changes its profile visibility, and the picture can remain visible elsewhere. Archiving eligible content keeps it stored and visible only to you. Removing a Featured picture or Highlight also leaves the original photo or story intact.

Can I delete a photo I added to a shared album?

Yes. Delete your own contribution using the photo deletion steps for your device. If the album owner removes you as a contributor, Facebook says you may still be able to delete the photos you added from your Activity Log. Leaving an album does not delete your contributions.

How do I delete a picture from my active Facebook story?

Open Your Story. Display the picture. On desktop, open Story Options; on Android, open More; on iPhone, open Options. Select Delete photo. Deleting the Facebook story also removes it from Messenger, and deleted active stories are not subsequently archived.

Can I delete a Messenger picture for everyone?

Yes, for a photo you sent. In the Android or iPhone Messenger app, open the conversation. Touch and hold your photo message. Select Delete. Choose Delete for everyone. The separate Delete for you action only removes it from your own view.
