Deleting texts on your phone doesn't clear your iCloud Messages library unless message syncing is enabled. Start by checking that setting, then choose what to remove: individual messages, whole conversations, or photos and videos. You can also empty Recently Deleted and set older messages to clear automatically.

Make sure your deletions reach iCloud

With Messages in iCloud turned off, deleting messages on your device does not clear the separately synced iCloud library. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All beside Saved to iCloud > Messages.

Enable Messages in iCloud. On iPhone, turn on Use on this iPhone.

On Mac, open Messages > Settings > iMessage. Select Enable Messages in iCloud. Keep syncing enabled while deleting messages. Those deletions reach your other synced devices, but the recipient keeps their copy.

Delete texts or conversations on iPhone and iPad

Start here when you want to choose exactly what goes. You can remove a single text, an attachment, or several conversations at once.

For individual items, open a conversation in Messages. Touch and hold the message bubble or attachment you want to remove. Then tap More.

Select the items you want to delete. Tap the trash-can Delete button.

To remove a whole conversation, swipe left on it in the conversation list. Tap Delete, then tap Delete again to confirm.

For several conversations at once, open Edit > Select Messages from the conversation list. Select every conversation you want removed. Tap the trash-can Delete button.

Confirm with Delete. The deleted items remain recoverable in Recently Deleted until you permanently remove them or their recovery period ends.

Clear photos and videos from a conversation

You can delete shared pictures without removing the whole conversation. Open the conversation in Messages.

Tap the contact name. On iOS 26 or later, open Photos > Edit > Select Photos; the selection control is also labeled Select.

Select the images or videos you want removed. Tap Delete. Confirm with Delete Attachment.

Empty Recently Deleted for permanent removal

Deleted messages normally remain recoverable for 30 days; remove them sooner with these steps.

  1. 1.Open Messages on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. 2.Tap the Filter button, then Recently Deleted.
  3. 3.Select the conversations you want to permanently remove.
  4. 4.Tap Delete, then Delete again to confirm. Some interfaces label the permanent-removal control Permanently Delete.

Clean up messages on a Mac

Use your Mac to remove messages, conversations, and attachments from the same synced library. Keep Enable Messages in iCloud selected before you begin.

For individual messages, open the conversation in Messages. Select the message or messages you want removed. Press the Delete key. Click Delete to confirm.

For whole conversations, select them in the sidebar. Control-click the selection. Choose Delete.

For attachments, open the conversation. Click the contact or group icon, also identified as Info. Open an attachment category such as Photos. Click Show more.

Shift-click the items you want removed. Command-click selection is another option in Apple's attachment-deletion workflow. Control-click the selection. Choose Delete.

Confirm with Delete Attachment when that confirmation appears. To permanently remove deleted conversations, open Messages > View > Recently Deleted. Select the conversations you want to erase. Click Delete. Confirm the permanent deletion.

Keep older messages from building up

The Forever retention setting keeps old conversations and attachments until you delete them. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages, under Message History.

Choose 30 Days or 1 Year. Conversations and attachments older than that cutoff are removed, so choose the period you want to keep.

On Mac, open Messages > Settings > General > Keep messages. Select 30 Days or One Year instead of Forever. Keep Messages in iCloud enabled for those deletions to sync.

Turn off Messages in iCloud across your devices

To use Apple's method for removing messages from iCloud by disabling the service across your devices, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Messages on your iPhone. Turn off Use on this iPhone. Repeat the process to turn off Messages in iCloud on each of your other iPhones and iPads.

On each Mac, open Messages > Settings > iMessage. Deselect Enable Messages in iCloud.

For selective cleanup, keep syncing active and use the deletion methods above; Apple specifies no cloud-deletion deadline for disabling the service across devices.

Remove message copies stored in an iCloud backup

With Messages in iCloud turned off, an iCloud device backup can contain your messages. With it enabled, messages sync separately and are excluded from the daily backup, so deleting a backup does not clear that separate library.

Delete a backup only when you want to remove the entire selected device backup, including any messages it contains. This also turns off automatic backups for that device.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Storage > Backups. The storage control is also labeled Manage Account Storage.

Select the device whose backup you want to remove. Tap Turn Off and Delete from iCloud. Confirm with Turn Off and Delete.

On Mac, open System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage > Backups. Select the device backup. Click Delete or the minus-shaped Remove button.

On Windows, open iCloud for Windows > Storage > Backup. Select the device backup you want to remove. Click Delete.

Click Delete again to confirm. This removes the backup and disables backup for that device; your separately synced Messages library stays separate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete synced messages through iCloud.com or Windows?

There is no dedicated Messages inbox on iCloud.com or official Windows editor for Messages in iCloud. Use the Messages app on an Apple device to delete synced messages.

Can I take back an iMessage I just sent?

Yes. Within two minutes, touch and hold the sent bubble on iPhone or iPad, then tap Undo Send. On Mac, Control-click the bubble and choose Undo Send. This requires iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, macOS 13, or later. Recipients using older systems can retain the original. It does not work for SMS, MMS, or RCS.

Does permanent deletion update my iCloud storage immediately?

An immediate storage-meter change is not guaranteed. Apple also states that automatic permanent deletion from iCloud occurs after 40 days, which is separate from the normal 30-day recovery period.

Will uninstalling Messages delete its iCloud data?

No. Where Apple allows deleting the Messages app in the EU, its data remains in iCloud when Messages in iCloud is enabled.
