Ready to join Instagram, but unsure which signup option to choose? You can create an account with your email address, mobile number, or an existing Facebook account. Follow the steps below to get started in the app or a browser, or jump to the additional-profile options if you're already signed in.
Create your first account in the Instagram app
This gets your first account set up with email or a mobile number on Android, iPhone, or iPad.
Open Instagram and tap Create New Account. Enter your email address or mobile number, then tap Next.
Enter the confirmation code and tap Next. Create a password, then tap Next.
Enter your own birthday, even for a business or pet profile. Instagram specifies a minimum age of 13; regional eligibility requirements also apply. Tap Next, add your name, then tap Next.
Choose a username, then tap Next. Review the terms, then tap I agree. Add a profile picture, or tap Skip to leave it for later. If you added a picture, tap Next.
If Instagram offers your Facebook account
Instagram recognizes your Facebook account and offers Facebook-assisted signup where that option is available. Select Continue as [name] to use that account, then confirm with Yes, continue.
Tap Next to synchronize your profile information. Sign in to Facebook if prompted. Choose an Instagram username, then tap Next.
Review the terms, then select I agree. To use email or a phone number instead, tap Create new account on the first screen, or Continue without Facebook if you already selected Continue as [name]. Follow the app signup steps above. Use that same route when Facebook-assisted signup is absent.
Sign up in a browser instead
No app needed: you can register from a computer or mobile browser.
- 1.Open Instagram’s registration form.
- 2.Fill in Mobile number or email and create a Password.
- 3.Enter your Birthday using the Month, Day, and Year fields.
- 4.Complete Full name and Username.
- 5.Review the terms, then select Submit.
- 6.Complete any verification requested after submitting the form.
Your options for an additional profile
Already signed in? You can create another profile and add it to Accounts Center, or select Create password instead during registration to give it its own password without that connection.
Meta is gradually replacing Accounts Center with Meta Account, so wording varies across accounts during the rollout. The two routes below cover the additional-profile choices.
Instagram no longer lets you add accounts to its original single-login feature, even if an older tutorial tells you to. Previously linked accounts can keep their existing login arrangement. That restriction does not apply to current Accounts Center or Meta Account connected-login features.
Add a profile through Accounts Center
Choose this route to create another profile and connect it through Accounts Center. Tap Profile or your profile picture, then tap your profile name.
Select Add Instagram account, choose Create new account, and enter the new profile name. Tap Next, select Continue, and choose Allow and continue to accept the connection.
Add a phone number or email address, then tap Next. Tap Complete sign up. If this route fails, try the browser signup form above. To decline the connection during registration, select Create password instead and continue with the separate-password steps below.
Give the new profile its own password
Tap your profile picture in Instagram, then tap your profile name. Select Add Instagram account, choose Create new account, and enter the new profile name.
Tap Next, then tap Continue. Select Create password instead to proceed without adding the profile to Accounts Center. Create a password, then tap Next.
Add your phone number or email address, then tap Next. Select Complete sign up. Tip: Instagram supports up to 10 accounts logged in simultaneously; that is not an account-ownership limit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create an Instagram account for a business?
Yes. Create an account first, then open your profile. Tap More to reach Settings and activity. Under For professionals, select Account type and tools. Tap Switch to professional account. Select a category, then tap Switch to professional account again. Choose Business or Creator and tap Next. Complete or skip the optional profile and contact setup. This converts the existing profile rather than creating another account. Professional accounts are public, and connecting a Facebook Page is optional.
What software does Instagram require on iPhone and iPad?
The US App Store listing requires iOS 16.3 or later on iPhone, or iPadOS 16.3 or later on iPad.
Is Instagram Lite available for Android?
Yes. Instagram Lite is available through its official Google Play listing for compatible Android devices in supported markets. Availability depends on your device and region.
Does parental supervision create an Instagram account for a teen?
No. The parent and teen each need their own Instagram account before setting up supervision. Supervision is not a separate signup method.
