Need a new Gmail address for personal email, a child, or work? Google creates Gmail accounts through the Google Account signup flow, and you can start that flow from a browser, Gmail.com, the Gmail app, Android settings, or a Chromebook.
Start with the browser method if you just want the fastest route. The other options below cover phones, Chromebooks, child accounts, and existing Google Accounts that need Gmail added.
1. Start a new Gmail account in a browser
Use this first: go to the Google Account sign-in page, select Create account, then choose Personal use, Child, or Work or business.
- 1.Open the Google Account sign-in page.
- 2.Select Create account.
- 3.Choose Personal use, Child, or Work or business.
- 4.Choose a suggested Gmail address or create your own Gmail address.
- 5.Enter your Gmail name in Username.
- 6.Enter your password, then confirm it in the password confirmation field.
- 7.Select Next.
- 8.If Google asks for a phone number, add and verify it, then select Next.
- 9.Finish the remaining on-screen steps.
You can also begin at Gmail.com. Select More options, choose Create an account, and follow the on-screen instructions.
2. Choose the account type that fits
Google’s signup flow gives you three account choices. Pick Personal use for your own Gmail inbox and everyday Google services.
Choose Child when you are creating an account for a child under 13 or under the applicable age in your country. Choose Work or business when the Gmail address is for professional use.
3. Create one in the Gmail app
The Gmail app uses the same Google sign-in flow on Android, iPhone, and iPad.
- 1.Open the Gmail app.
- 2.Tap your Profile at the top right of the search bar.
- 3.Tap Add another account.
- 4.Choose Google.
- 5.Select Create account.
- 6.Follow the on-screen steps to choose the Gmail address, enter the password, and finish setup.
If the Gmail app is not installed, get it from Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone and iPad, then use the steps above.
4. Add it through Android settings
On Android, you can create the account while adding a Google account to the device.
- 1.Open Settings.
- 2.Tap Passwords & accounts.
- 3.Under Accounts, tap Add account.
- 4.Choose Google.
- 5.Select Create account in the Google sign-in flow.
- 6.Follow the on-screen instructions to create the Gmail address and password.
On some Android devices, the account menu uses a different label. Look for Users & accounts, Passwords, Passwords, passkeys & autofill, Password, passkeys & accounts, or Manage accounts.
5. Set up Gmail for a child
For a child account, use Family Link or the child setup flow on a supported Android device or Chromebook.
In Family Link: open Family Link, select your child’s profile at the top left, tap Add child, and follow the on-screen instructions until confirmation appears. If you live in the European Union and your child is 13 to 15, follow Google’s new Android device setup steps instead.
On a new Android device running Android 5.0 or later: during setup, tap Create account. If that option is not shown, tap More options, choose For my child, enter the child’s name, birthday, gender, email address, and password, then complete the parent sign-in, consent, and settings prompts.
On a new Chromebook running ChromeOS M128 or later: choose For a child, select Child’s Google Account, choose Create a Google Account for a child, then enter the child’s details and complete the parent sign-in, consent, and settings prompts.
If a child Google Account was created without Gmail and password, upgrade it when prompted from a blocked app or parent email. Follow the prompts to create the child’s Gmail address and password, then review the privacy and consent screens.
6. Add Gmail to your existing Google Account
Already have a Google Account without Gmail? Go to mail.google.com, fill out the form, select Submit, and follow the verification instructions. Google says the new Gmail address becomes the account’s primary username.
If Gmail was deleted from that Google Account, go to mail.google.com, sign in to the Google Account, and follow the on-screen information to add Gmail back.
7. Use a Chromebook sign-in screen
- 1.Sign out of the Chromebook.
- 2.At the bottom of the sign-in screen, click Add person.
- 3.On Choose your setup, select For personal use, For a child, or For work or school.
- 4.Click Next.
- 5.Follow the steps that appear. If the person does not have an account, create the Google Account from that flow.
On managed work or school Chromebooks, use the organization’s allowed sign-in option.
8. Avoid the wrong signup path
iPhone and iPad Mail settings add an existing Gmail account to Apple Mail. They do not create a new Gmail account. Use Gmail.com, the Google sign-in flow, or the Gmail app instead.
Android 4.4 and lower Settings cannot create a Google Account. On Android 3.0 through 4.4, open the device browser, go to accounts.google.com/signup, follow the signup instructions, then add the account to the device. On Android 2.3.7 or lower, you can’t sign in, add, or create a Google Account on the device, so use Gmail in the device browser or update Android first.
