To create a free Yahoo Mail account, open Yahoo’s registration page, choose an available email address, enter your personal details and password, then verify your mobile number. You can complete registration in a browser on a computer, phone, or tablet without installing an app. Yahoo says basic signup and use are free, and paid plans are optional.

The short version

  • Start signup: Open Yahoo registration or select Create a Yahoo account on the Yahoo Mail website.
  • Choose your address: Enter an available username for your new Yahoo email address.
  • Verify your number: Complete the mobile verification prompts using SMS or WhatsApp when Yahoo offers it.
  • Keep the goal clear: Existing-email signup and Gmail connection serve different purposes from creating a new Yahoo address.

Open Yahoo account registration

Open Yahoo’s registration page in your browser to begin. Have your mobile number ready for verification. Sign in only through Yahoo’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

You can also open the Yahoo Mail website and select Create a Yahoo account. That takes you through the same registration and mobile-number verification process.

Choose your new Yahoo email address

Enter your first and last names in First name and Last name, then choose your address in New Yahoo email. Your username must be available. If your preferred username is taken, choose another available username to continue.

When registration includes the email-domain selector, you can select @myyahoo.com instead of @yahoo.com. This is another domain choice within Yahoo signup, and it follows the same registration and phone-verification process.

For a new Yahoo address, continue with the New Yahoo email field. Selecting Use existing email instead creates a Yahoo identity using an address from another provider.

Enter your password and birth date

Complete Password and Date of birth along with the name and email fields. Once those details are entered, select Next to proceed to the remaining registration prompts. The current US-English form uses Next, while Yahoo’s signup instructions call this action Continue.

Verify your mobile number

Supply your mobile number during registration and complete Yahoo’s verification prompts. When text-message verification is available, enter the code from Yahoo’s SMS at the signup prompt, then follow the remaining prompts to finish creating your account.

When Yahoo offers WhatsApp verification, enter the mobile number associated with your active WhatsApp account and select Get code on WhatsApp. Open WhatsApp and read the code in Yahoo’s message. Return to Yahoo, enter that code, select Next, then select Done.

Create your account through Outlook connection

If you want to connect an existing Microsoft mailbox, open Yahoo’s Outlook connection page and select Connect Outlook. Create your free Yahoo Mail account through the registration and mobile verification process described above. Yahoo says your first inbox screen then offers Microsoft-account connection as an additional step.

Get the Yahoo Mail app

To get Yahoo Mail on a supported iOS or Android device, open Yahoo’s official mobile app page and follow its Apple App Store or Google Play link for your device. Downloading the app alone does not create an account. If you still need a new Yahoo email address, complete the browser registration and mobile verification process first.

Use an existing email address with Yahoo

If you want a Yahoo identity without a new Yahoo email address, select Use existing email on the registration page. Supply the requested existing address and account information, then complete the verification prompts.

To use Yahoo Mail with Gmail, open Yahoo’s Gmail connection page and select Connect Gmail. Sign in with your Google account and complete Google authorization for the connection. Yahoo says you do not need a separate Yahoo account, and your Gmail address stays unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Microsoft email addresses work with Yahoo’s Outlook connection?

Yahoo’s Outlook connection supports Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, and MSN users. You create your Yahoo Mail account before connecting the Microsoft mailbox.

Why might Yahoo offer WhatsApp verification instead of SMS?

Yahoo says SMS may be unavailable in some countries. If Yahoo offers WhatsApp verification, you can receive the code through an active WhatsApp account using the mobile number you supply.

What about older Yahoo addresses ending in yahoo.co.uk or yahoo.fr?

Yahoo identifies those country-domain addresses with older accounts. For current signup, Yahoo lists @yahoo.com and @myyahoo.com as domain choices.

What name does Yahoo use for existing email signup in its help instructions?

In Yahoo’s signup instructions, find My Email for the option intended for people who do not want a new Yahoo email address. On the current registration form, select Use existing email to take that route.
