No screen on your HP printer means no place to type your Wi-Fi password. You can still connect a wireless model through the HP app, your router's WPS button, or a compatible browser setup. Start with the app and use the setup buttons that match your printer.

Check your printer and get the right app

First, check that your printer supports wireless networking. Software cannot add built-in Wi-Fi to a USB-only model.

Connect your phone or computer to the Wi-Fi network you want the printer to use. Have that network's password ready for app setup.

Visit HP's official setup page, identify your printer, and install the software offered for your printer and operating system. The HP app supports Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, including most wireless-capable HP printers manufactured from 2014 onward.

HP still supplies HP Smart for some devices, including Windows 10 32-bit. Use the app HP offers for your device.

Set up Wi-Fi through the HP app

Turn on Bluetooth on your phone or computer so the app can discover the printer. On a mobile device, grant location access when prompted. Then put the printer into Wi-Fi setup mode using the matching button sequence in the next section.

Open the HP app. Select + > Add a device > Set Up a New Printer. Select your printer, using Choose an available printer if that option appears for a previously used printer.

Select your Wi-Fi network when prompted, then enter that network's password when prompted. If your device uses HP Smart, open it and select Set Up a New Printer or Add Printer instead.

Select Get Started if this is your first setup. Choose the wireless connection type if prompted, then select Continue if prompted. Select your printer or Set Up, depending on the screen shown.

Choose your Wi-Fi network in the guided setup and enter its password when prompted. Tip: Complete printer discovery within two hours of restoring Wi-Fi setup mode.

Restore setup mode when the app cannot find your printer

An expired Wi-Fi setup window stops the printer from being available for setup discovery. Use the sequence for your printer family below. These buttons prepare the printer for setup; the app completes the connection to your router.

For DeskJet 2700–2900, 4100–4300, Ultra 4800, and 4900 wireless models, press Cancel. Hold Wireless and Cancel together for five seconds, then wait for the blue light to blink.

For DeskJet Plus 6000/6400 and ENVY 6000/6000e/6400e/Pro 6400, hold the rear Wireless button for five seconds. Wait for the light to turn purple.

For Tango, hold the rear Wi-Fi button for five seconds. Wait for a pulsing blue light.

For LaserJet M109–M112 wireless models, wake the printer with Resume/Cancel. Hold Wireless for more than 20 seconds until the Attention light blinks, then let the printer restart.

For Smart Tank 210/580/5100/670/720/750/6000/7000/7300 wireless models, start with the printer ready. Hold Information for five seconds. Then hold Wireless and Cancel together for five seconds until the blue light blinks.

For Smart Tank 510, hold Wireless and Cancel together for five seconds.

For an unlisted model, follow its model-specific HP instructions. There is no universal reset combination for every screenless HP printer. Return to the app's Set Up a New Printer option within two hours to complete discovery.

Use WPS to connect without entering a password

WPS connects a compatible printer to a WPS-enabled router without an app or Wi-Fi password. Place the printer near the router. On most screenless models, start pairing by holding Wi-Fi for five seconds until its light flashes.

For DeskJet 6000/6400, ENVY 6000/6400, and Tango, use this sequence instead: hold Wi-Fi and Power together for three seconds, as HP's dedicated WPS instructions specify. Within two minutes, hold the router's WPS button for three to five seconds, or until pairing starts.

Wait for the printer's wireless light or light bar to become steady, indicating a connection. Then add the connected printer through + > Add a device in the HP app on your phone or computer.

Connect through a browser on compatible printers

Some screenless HP printers provide a temporary setup network and a browser-based Wireless Setup Wizard. This option is available on models including the DeskJet 2700; availability and the setup network's name depend on the model.

Restore the printer's Wi-Fi setup mode using its model-specific buttons. In your phone or computer's Wi-Fi settings, join the printer's temporary setup network, such as HP=Setup<EE_DeskJet 2700 series>. Open 192.168.223.1 in a browser.

Enter the printer PIN from the label inside the cartridge area when requested. Select Network > Wireless > Wireless Setup Wizard > Next. Select your home Wi-Fi network when prompted.

Enter its password to complete the guided connection. If the connection fails, or your printer does not offer the temporary setup network or wizard, try the HP app or WPS.

Switch an existing USB printer installation to Wi-Fi

This changes a wireless-capable printer's existing USB setup to a Wi-Fi connection. Turn off the printer, then shut down your computer.

Disconnect the USB cable. Turn the printer back on and start your computer. Dismiss any device-setup prompts.

Select the printer in the HP app. Scroll down to Remove from app, then select Remove from app.

If your device uses HP Smart, right-click the printer instead. Select Hide Printer > Hide Printer. Restore the printer's Wi-Fi setup mode with its model-specific buttons. Start the app's guided wireless setup again with Set Up a New Printer.

Select your printer. Choose your Wi-Fi network when prompted, then enter its password when prompted.

Repair a previously connected printer that goes offline

For supported printers on Windows 10 version 1809 or later or macOS 12 or later, use the HP app's repair tool to troubleshoot an existing connection.

  1. 1.Open the HP app and select your printer.
  2. 2.Choose Diagnose & Fix. Alternate layouts place it under Printers or Diagnostics > Diagnose and Fix.
  3. 3.Select Start and leave the app open while it runs.
  4. 4.Follow the repair instructions shown in the results. The tool attempts to reconnect offline printers; it does not guarantee initial Wi-Fi setup.
  5. 5.If the printer still needs to join your network, restore its Wi-Fi setup mode and repeat the app's Set Up a New Printer process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does connecting to a DIRECT-xx-HP network put my printer on home Wi-Fi?

No. Wi-Fi Direct connects your device directly to the printer for printing. It does not connect the printer to your home Wi-Fi or provide internet access.

Why does the HP app need Bluetooth for Wi-Fi setup?

Bluetooth helps the HP app discover the printer during setup. The resulting network connection uses Wi-Fi.

Is the printer PIN the same as my Wi-Fi password?

They serve different purposes. Browser setup requests the printer-label PIN to access printer settings when authentication is required. The network password prompt requires your home Wi-Fi password.

Does removing the printer from the HP app erase its Wi-Fi settings?

No. Removing an app or printer listing alone does not erase the printer's network configuration. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode separately when you need to run wireless setup again.

Should I use HP Print and Scan Doctor to fix the connection?

No. HP retired Print and Scan Doctor on May 27, 2025, and recommends removing it. Use Diagnose & Fix in the HP app instead.
