Facebook does not let you comment anonymously everywhere. The option lives inside Facebook Groups, and only when anonymous participation is available for that group and account.
If you want to hide your name from regular Group viewers, start with the comment identity picker in the Facebook app. Here are the current Facebook-supported ways to do it, plus what to check when the option does not appear.
Use anonymous commenting in a Facebook Group
This method applies when you are commenting inside a Facebook Group that allows anonymous participation. Use the current Facebook app on iPhone or Android for the clearest path.
Open the Facebook app and go to the Group post you want to answer.
Tap Comment.
Tap your profile picture beside the Write a comment... field.
Choose Anonymous member in a private group, Anonymous participant in a public group, or an available nickname.
Write your comment and publish it.
Comment on your own anonymous post
Open the Facebook Group where anonymous participation is available.
Start a new post from the Group composer, usually the Write something... box.
Select Anonymous post or turn on Post anonymously.
Submit the post for admin review if Facebook prompts you.
Wait for the anonymous post to publish.
Add your comment to that same post; Facebook keeps comments on your own anonymous post anonymous too.
Admins, moderators, and Facebook systems can still identify the account behind the post and comments.
Try a Group nickname instead
A Group nickname fixes the visible-name problem for regular Group viewers, but it is pseudonymous, not fully anonymous.
Open the Facebook app and go to the Group post where you want to comment.
Tap Comment.
Tap your profile picture beside the comment bar.
Select the nickname identity shown for that Group.
Write and publish your comment under that nickname.
Ask an admin to enable anonymous participation
This method applies when the anonymous option is missing because the Group has not enabled anonymous participation. Regular members do not have a personal switch that forces anonymous comments on.
Ask a Group admin to open the Group's anonymous participation settings.
On mobile, the admin opens the Group, taps Manage group, scrolls down to Group settings, scrolls to Manage discussion and taps Anonymous participation, taps On, then taps Save.
On desktop, the admin goes to facebook.com/groups, selects the Group, opens Group settings or Manage then Group settings, and edits Anonymous participation or Anonymous posting under Manage discussion.
Once the setting is enabled and available, members can post, comment, and react anonymously or with nicknames depending on the Group configuration.
Update the Facebook app
On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store.
Find Facebook by Meta Platforms, Inc.
Tap Get or Update.
On Android, open Google Play.
Find Facebook by Meta Platforms, Inc.

Facebook's own download guidance simply sends you to your device's app store, and updating does not grant anonymous commenting by itself.
Use Facebook.com only when the selector appears
Desktop works only when Facebook shows the identity selector for that Group, post, and account. Go to facebook.com, open Groups, select the Group, open the post, and click the comment field.
Look beside the comment field for an identity or profile selector. If it appears, choose Anonymous member, Anonymous participant, or a nickname before you submit the comment.
If the selector is missing on desktop, use the Facebook app instead. Facebook's clearest anonymous-comment flow is in the mobile app.
Know what anonymous means on Facebook
This matters before you post anything sensitive. Anonymous participation hides your profile name and photo from ordinary Group viewers, but Group admins, moderators, and Facebook systems can still identify the account.
Anonymous comments are limited to Facebook Groups where the feature is enabled and available. They are not supported for regular profile comments, Page comments, public Feed comments, Marketplace listings, Messenger, browser extensions, or device-level settings.
Group admins can enable anonymous participation for posts, comments, and reactions. Facebook indicates admins cannot allow only anonymous posts while separately disabling anonymous comments and reactions under that same anonymous participation setting.
Fix a missing anonymous comment option
The most common cause is that you are trying to comment somewhere outside a Facebook Group that supports anonymous participation.
Move the comment to a Group post where anonymous participation is enabled, then tap the identity selector beside the comment field.
If the post is in a Group and the anonymous identity is still missing, use the Facebook app, update it if needed, and ask a Group admin to enable Anonymous participation.
Do not create a second personal Facebook account for anonymous comments. Facebook does not support maintaining more than one personal account; Facebook has also stopped new additional profiles, so you can no longer create one, and an existing additional profile is still a visible identity.
