To erase voicemail on Android, select messages in your voicemail app and tap Trash or Delete, or call your carrier’s voicemail and follow its deletion prompts. Deletion removes the selected messages, and recovery depends on your service. Use the instructions that match your phone and carrier.

The short version

  • Visual voicemail: Use the deletion controls for your specific phone and carrier.
  • Multiple messages: Verizon Pixel, several carrier apps, Google Voice and YouMail support selecting messages together.
  • Telephone access: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile use 7 to delete a message during voicemail playback.
  • Permanent deletion: Verizon cannot retrieve erased network messages, and T-Mobile telephone deletions become unrecoverable after you disconnect.

Clear voicemail on a Verizon Google Pixel

On a Google Pixel with active Verizon Visual Voicemail, deletion removes the selected voicemail, and Verizon says erased network messages cannot be retrieved. Open Phone > Voicemail, select the message you want to remove, then tap the Trash icon.

Deleting a selection removes every selected voicemail. To clear several messages, touch and hold one until its selection checkmark appears, then select the others. To select the entire list, tap the Select all icon. Review your selection, then tap the Trash icon.

These controls apply to Pixel phones with active Verizon Visual Voicemail. Other phones using Phone by Google depend on carrier support. When your app does not match this interface, use your carrier’s telephone mailbox instructions below.

Delete messages on Samsung and Motorola phones

On a Samsung phone using Verizon Visual Voicemail, deletion removes the selected messages, and erased Verizon network messages cannot be retrieved. Open Voicemail, select a message in the Visual Voicemail inbox, then tap the Trash icon. For multiple messages, select the additional messages, tap the Trash icon, then tap Delete.

On a Motorola phone using Verizon Visual Voicemail, deletion removes the selected messages without recovery from Verizon’s voicemail network. Open Voicemail and tap the Refresh icon. Touch and hold a message, select any additional messages you want to remove, then tap the Trash icon and OK.

On an AT&T Samsung device with this Visual Voicemail interface, deletion removes the selected voicemail. Open Phone > Keypad, then select the Visual Voicemail icon. Select a voicemail and tap the Delete icon, or touch and hold the voicemail, select Delete, then select Delete again.

Samsung voicemail controls vary with the carrier’s app, so match these steps to the service you use. When your phone does not show the matching interface, call your carrier’s mailbox instead.

Remove messages in T-Mobile Visual Voicemail

Deleting messages in T-Mobile Visual Voicemail removes them from the carrier mailbox when the app synchronizes. Open Visual Voicemail > Menu, then select the Trash Can icon at the top. Select the messages you want to remove and choose Delete.

To synchronize the inbox, select Menu > Refresh. This applies your app’s deletions to the carrier mailbox. Sign in only through T-Mobile’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

Erase messages by calling your carrier

You can also manage voicemail through your carrier’s telephone menu. Open Phone and touch and hold 1 to call voicemail, then tap Keypad during the call when needed. Listen to the prompts because the deletion command depends on the carrier.

For AT&T Wireless basic or enhanced voicemail, deletion erases the current message. Touch and hold 1 on your phone’s keypad and enter your voicemail password when requested. While reviewing a message, press 7 to delete it, then repeat for other messages you want to remove.

Verizon says messages erased from its voicemail network cannot be retrieved. In Phone, dial *86 and place the call, then enter your voicemail password when prompted. Press 7 during or after a message to delete it, and repeat for additional messages.

T-Mobile telephone deletions cannot be recovered after you disconnect. Touch and hold 1 to call voicemail, enter your password when requested, then press 1 at the main menu to listen to messages. Press 7 to delete the current message. If you delete one by mistake, press 1 after deletion during the same call to recover it before hanging up.

For Rogers wireless voicemail, deletion removes the message you are reviewing. Call your voicemail, play the message and press 7. If deletion during playback fails, listen to the entire message and press 7 when instructed.

Continue through the messages you want to remove using your carrier’s prompts. When you finish reviewing them, tap End call.

Delete Google Voice voicemail

Deleting through Google Voice removes the selected Google Voice messages; it does not clear an unrelated carrier mailbox. On Android, open Voice > Voicemail, select a voicemail, then tap More options. Tap Delete, check I understand, then tap Delete again.

Deleting several messages removes all the Google Voice voicemails you select. Touch and hold the first voicemail, select additional items, then tap Delete. Check I understand and tap Delete to confirm.

Clear messages stored in YouMail

Deleting in YouMail removes messages from their folder, and deleted messages may remain temporarily in Trash. Open YouMail and start in Inbox, using the drop-down arrow to choose another folder when needed. Swipe right on a message, or open it and tap the upper-right Trash icon.

Deleting a group removes every highlighted message from that folder. Press and hold each message you want to remove until it is highlighted. Review the highlighted messages, then tap the Trash icon.

Fix a mailbox that still needs clearing

If T-Mobile Visual Voicemail still shows messages after deletion, select Menu > Refresh to synchronize the inbox. If you cannot manage the messages in your carrier’s voicemail app, use your carrier’s telephone workflow above. Google Voice and YouMail messages are not stored in your carrier’s mailbox, so delete those in the Google Voice or YouMail app instead. For an access or mailbox problem those steps cannot resolve, use your carrier’s official help.

Turning off visual voicemail in Phone by Google deletes recordings from the Phone app, but your carrier might retain copies. On supported devices and carriers, open Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail, then turn off Visual voicemail. Use this when you intend to remove the app’s recordings; use your carrier’s deletion controls to clear its mailbox.

Turning off transcription deletes recordings and transcriptions stored in the Phone app. On devices and carriers that expose Voicemail transcription, open Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail, then turn off Voicemail transcription. Google supports transcription on Android 8.0 and later with carrier, language and regional restrictions, so use your carrier’s mailbox workflow when this setting is missing.
