Check an HP hinge problem by inspecting the hinge and surrounding casing without repeatedly moving the lid, then request a repair assessment using your laptop’s product and serial numbers. Do not force the lid closed or repeatedly reproduce stiffness, popping, or screen problems. Visible signs help you describe the damage, but they do not establish which internal part failed.

The short version

  • Check gently: Look for cracks, a lifting bezel, casing separation, exposed cables, or display discoloration without repeatedly moving the lid.
  • Identify the laptop: Record its product and serial numbers so support can identify the exact configuration.
  • Review coverage: An active warranty does not automatically mean hinge damage qualifies for free repair.
  • Request an assessment: HP, an authorized service center, or an independent repair provider can assess the hinge and surrounding structure.

Inspect the hinge and surrounding casing

Place the laptop on a stable surface and look around each hinge. Check for cracks in the casing, separation between panels, a lifting screen bezel, exposed cables, and discoloration on the display. These checks apply to HP clamshell and convertible laptops regardless of operating system.

Note any stiffness, popping, wobbling, flickering, or screen blackout you already noticed when moving the lid. Do not repeatedly reproduce those symptoms or force the lid closed. If the case separates or the lid meets resistance, arrange an inspection.

The repair may involve the hinges, mounting structures, casing, or display parts. Ask the repair provider to identify the affected parts and provide a quote before proceeding. Avoid glue or arbitrary screw tightening.

Find the exact laptop identifiers

Read the product number and serial number from the label on the notebook’s underside or its original shipping box. Record both for your service request and replacement-part checks. A family name alone can cover several incompatible configurations.

On an HP Windows notebook with HP System Information installed, search Windows for HP System Information and open it, or press Fn + Esc on the built-in keyboard. Read the product name, product number, and serial number from the information window. Minimize other windows if it opens behind them.

HP cautions that this shortcut might not work with an external or virtual keyboard. If it does not work, use the physical label or box instead. That route also works when the laptop cannot start.

For an HP Chromebook, press Alt + V at the sign-in screen to display identifying information, including the serial number. Use that serial number for HP support or a warranty lookup. Read the underside label or box to obtain the product number as well.

Check your warranty coverage

Open HP’s warranty checker, select the country or region where you purchased the computer, and enter its serial number. Select Submit, then review the coverage and expiration information. If HP requests the product number, enter it and submit again.

You can complete that check from another computer or phone when the damaged laptop is unusable. The browser route works for HP notebooks regardless of operating system. Installing support software is optional for arranging hinge repair.

If you already have HP Support Assistant on a compatible Windows PC, connect to the internet, search Windows for HP Support Assistant, and open it. Open the warranty information for your computer in the app to review its coverage status and dates.

HP excludes ARM devices and Windows in S mode from this Windows app route, so use the browser warranty checker on those devices. On a compatible ChromeOS device with HP Support Assistant installed, connect to the internet and open the app to review warranty status and dates. HP specifies ChromeOS M99 or later and says the extension works on most supported devices.

Ask HP to assess the damage

Open HP’s virtual repair center and find the area for broken parts that support tools cannot diagnose. Select Contact us, supply the serial number, check the country or region, and choose an available contact method. Describe the hinge and surrounding casing damage and request repair options.

Use this contact route for a visibly broken hinge even if a software diagnostic passes. HP says its support tools cannot detect broken hinges or cracked screens. A passing HP PC Hardware Diagnostics result, including startup diagnostics, does not establish that the hinge or its mounting points are sound.

Explain whether the damage developed during ordinary use or followed an impact or excessive force. Under HP’s Standard Limited Warranty, hinge, bezel, panel, and chassis damage is excluded when it is not directly attributable to a manufacturing defect or failure. An active warranty does not guarantee free hinge repair; ask HP to assess the cause against the applicable terms.

You can also request repair options after the HP warranty expires. Contact methods and repair services depend on your country, model, and coverage. An authorized service center or an independent repair provider can offer another inspection route where it accepts your model.

Correct an inaccurate warranty record

If the warranty-check results for a supported consumer product show an incorrect status and offer the dispute link, select Dispute this. Enter your contact information and choose Dispute reason. If evidence is requested, select Choose File and upload proof of purchase, then select Dispute warranty.

HP accepts files up to 2 MB in .bmp, .doc, .docx, .gif, .jpg, .png, .pdf, and .zip formats. Correcting the warranty record does not automatically overturn a decision about whether physical damage is covered.

For commercial products, products in India, or models and serial numbers unsupported by the online dispute form, use HP’s contact page instead. Enter the serial number, correct the location if necessary, and choose the available telephone-support option. Ask the live agent to review the warranty record.

Compare local and separate warranty options

Use HP’s service center locator to find an authorized center serving your region and laptop model. Ask the center to inspect the hinge and surrounding mounting structure and provide an estimate.

If your retailer or reseller supplied a separate warranty, contact that seller for an assessment, including when HP coverage has expired. Provide the laptop details, damage description, and photographs. Request assessment under that agreement; coverage depends on its terms.

For a paid repair, you can also approach an independent laptop repair provider that accepts your HP model. Ask whether the repair requires hinges, mounting structures, casing, or display parts, and obtain a quote before proceeding.

Check model requirements before considering parts

Before considering internal repair, obtain the Maintenance and Service Guide for your exact laptop model. Check the display-assembly procedure, spare-part identifiers, and whether hinge work is assigned to authorized service providers.

The HP OmniBook 5 service guide covering models 16-bm0xxx, 16-bp0xxx, 16-bn1xxx, 16-cm0xxx, 16-bn0xxx, and 16-br0xxx places hinge replacement in its authorized-provider section and lists hinge kit P83633-001. Do not apply that part number or disassembly procedure to other models; obtain their own guides. A replacement part being available does not establish that the repair is suitable for you to perform yourself.

Track an arranged HP repair

Once you have an HP repair order, return to the virtual repair center and select Check repair status. Enter the service-order number and either your email address or the product serial number. Review the available shipping and estimated-delivery information. If the order cannot be found, contact HP about the existing repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can HP System Information read the serial number aloud?

Yes, in versions that provide the speaker icon beside Serial number, unmute the computer and select that icon. If a support agent needs to hear it, use the computer’s speakers and increase the volume.

Can you check coverage through the mobile HP Support Assistant app?

On a compatible Android or iOS device, open HP Support Assistant and select Warranty and Service Contracts. This displays coverage for registered HP devices. If you need the mobile app, follow the mobile store links on HP’s Support Assistant product page.

How do you check that a replacement hinge matches your laptop?

In the UK HP Parts Store, search by part number, product number, or serial number, removing a product-number suffix beginning with # when required; that store does not support generic model-name searches. Check Compatibility on the part page, or check the part through HP PartSurfer if compatibility information is absent. Ask parts support to confirm compatibility before ordering, since regional store interfaces differ.

What can you do if the replacement part cannot be ordered?

Check whether the part is temporarily unavailable, discontinued, or restricted to trade buyers. Ask HP Parts Store Support about compatible alternatives, or contact an HP-authorized service center or certified parts distributor for restricted parts.

How do you install HP Support Assistant on Windows or ChromeOS?

For a compatible PC running Windows 10 RS4 or later, open HP’s Support Assistant product page, select Download HP Support Assistant 9, and follow the installer; HP excludes ARM devices and Windows in S mode. For most supported ChromeOS M99-or-later devices, open the product page in Chrome, follow its Chrome Web Store extension link, and install the extension. Return to the product page and use its launch control.

Can you describe the damage to HP’s virtual agent?

On a supported Windows installation, open HP Support Assistant, select My Dashboard > Fixes & Diagnostics > Guided Troubleshooting, and explain the physical damage in ordinary text. Virtual-agent availability varies by country, and Support Resources provides additional help links. For a broken hinge, use HP’s direct repair-contact route.

Can you add the damaged laptop to HP Support Assistant on another computer?

Yes, on another compatible Windows computer, open HP Support Assistant and select My Dashboard > Add device. Select Detect my devices, or enter the laptop’s identifier in Serial number and select Find my device. Select the device, provide a nickname, and complete the addition.
