Added a new email to LinkedIn but still need to switch your primary address? Adding it is only part of the job: you need to verify the new inbox and select Make primary. Here’s how to finish the change on your computer or phone, plus what to do when your old inbox is out of reach.

Change your email on the LinkedIn website

Use this route when you’re signed in on a computer.

Open Me > Settings & Privacy.

Go to Sign in & security > Account access > Email addresses.

Select Add email address.

Complete the security challenge if prompted. Follow the request for a code sent to your current primary inbox or approval in the LinkedIn app.

Enter your new email address and LinkedIn password in the form.

Click Submit.

Open LinkedIn’s message in your new inbox and follow its instructions to verify the address.

Back in Email addresses, click Make primary beside the new address. That’s the step that completes the switch.

If your preferred address is already listed and verified, select Make primary beside it. There’s no need to add it again.

Use the LinkedIn app on your phone

The process is the same in LinkedIn’s iPhone and Android apps. Start by tapping your profile photo.

Open Settings & Privacy, or Settings if that’s the label shown.

Go to Sign in & security > Account access > Email addresses.

Tap Add email address.

Complete any security challenge when prompted, such as a code sent to your current primary inbox or approval in the LinkedIn app.

Enter your new address and LinkedIn password in the form.

Tap Submit.

Verify the address through LinkedIn’s message in your new inbox.

Back in Email addresses, tap Make primary beside the confirmed address.

If you can’t complete the change in the app, try LinkedIn in your phone’s browser using the route below.

Switch your email through a mobile browser

From your profile photo menu, open Settings, or Settings & Privacy if that’s the label shown. Then go to Sign in & security > Email addresses > Add email address.

Submit your new email address and LinkedIn password using Submit.

Complete any security challenge, including verification through the message LinkedIn delivers to your new inbox.

Once the address is confirmed, select Make primary beside it in Email addresses.

Remove the old address after switching

LinkedIn blocks removal of an address that is still your primary email.

First, select Make primary beside another verified address in Email addresses. Removing the old address afterward is optional.

On a computer, open Me > Settings & Privacy > Sign in & security.

Click Email addresses under Account access, or Change beside Email addresses if that’s the control shown.

Click Remove beside the old address.

In the mobile app, tap your profile photo.

Open Settings > Sign in & security > Email addresses, using Settings & Privacy if that’s the settings label shown.

Tap X beside the old address, or Remove if that’s the control shown.

Complete the password, verification-code, or app-approval challenge when prompted.

Recover access when your old inbox is gone

If you’ve lost access to your primary inbox and can’t sign in, start with another email address or phone number already registered to your LinkedIn account.

Sign in using that registered secondary email or phone number.

Once you regain access, follow the email-settings steps above to switch your primary address.

If you need a password reset, select Forgot password on the sign-in screen.

Enter your registered email address or phone number.

Select Next.

Select Can’t access this email?.

Choose an accessible recovery destination when LinkedIn offers one.

If you cannot access any registered recovery method, select Don't have access to any of these? to begin identity-based recovery.

On a computer, scan the displayed QR code with your phone to continue.

Provide your new email address.

Complete identity verification. LinkedIn reviews the recovery request and follows up, so this route does not change your email instantly.

Resolve an email address already registered elsewhere

An email address linked to someone else’s LinkedIn account prevents you from adding it to yours.

If an employer or internet service provider reassigned the address to you, open LinkedIn Help’s Email address is already registered page.

Select contact LinkedIn Support.

Explain that the address was reassigned to you and request help adding it to your account. LinkedIn does not guarantee that reassignment will be possible or immediate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing my email change who can see it or how often LinkedIn emails me?

No. Email visibility and notification frequency have separate settings.

Do I need to install or update the LinkedIn app to change my email?

No installation, update, or download is required. You can make the change through LinkedIn’s website.

Does enabling product access for an email make it my primary address?

No. If a toggle appears beside a confirmed address for product or license access, it controls that access only. It does not select your primary email.

How do I change a separate Sales Navigator email?

For an individual subscription, contact Sales Navigator support with your current and preferred addresses. For an organization-provided account, ask your account administrator to update it. Your Sales Navigator email determines where LinkedIn sends Sales Navigator notifications and updates. To change your personal LinkedIn primary email, use the Email addresses settings described above.
