Your Apple ID email is the primary email address for your Apple Account, and it is the address you use to sign in. Apple now calls the Apple ID an Apple Account, so current support pages label this setting the Apple Account primary email address. When that address is old, inaccessible, or tied to work or school, the cleanest fix is to change the primary email from Apple’s account settings. Start with the trusted-device method, then use the special paths below only if your account type needs them.
Use your iPhone iPad or Mac first
This method applies to a personal Apple Account when you are using a trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac with two-factor authentication. Apple calls this the easiest and most secure way to change the primary email address.
Open Settings on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on Mac, then select your name.
Go to Sign-In & Security and select your primary email address.
Choose Remove from Account if you want to remove the old email, or turn off Primary Email if you want to keep that address on the account.
Select another primary email address already on the account, or add a new primary email address.
Follow the onscreen steps to enter and verify the new primary email address. After verification, it becomes your primary email address. Any other email addresses still on the account can also be used to sign in.
Change it from account.apple.com
Use the web method when you are in a browser, on a non-Apple device, or away from the Settings app.
Go to account.apple.com and sign in to your Apple Account.
Open Sign-In and Security.
Select Email & Phone Numbers.
Manage the primary email address, then follow the prompts to enter and verify the new address.
Keep your trusted iPhone, iPad, or Mac nearby, because Apple may redirect you to that device when possible.
Add the new email if it is missing
The most common cause is that the email address you want is not already on your Apple Account.
Sign in at account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security, then choose Email & Phone Numbers.
Select the Add button.
Enter the additional email address.
Enter the verification code and select Continue.
Once the email is verified, return to Settings or System Settings, select your name, and open Sign-In & Security.
Select your primary email address, turn off Primary Email or choose Remove from Account, then choose the verified email as the new primary email address.
Handle an iCloud only email account
Accounts that only have an iCloud email address work differently. Remove from Account is not shown when the only email address on the account is an iCloud email address.
On iOS 18.1 or later, iPadOS 18.1 or later, or macOS 26.4 or later, open Settings or System Settings, select your name, then open Sign-In & Security. Select the iCloud primary email address, choose Change Email Address, and follow the onscreen steps.
If this method fails, confirm the device is running iOS 18.1 or later, iPadOS 18.1 or later, or macOS 26.4 or later, then try the trusted-device flow again.
Switch a phone number account to email
Some Apple Accounts in China mainland and India were created with a mobile phone number instead of an email address. For these accounts, Apple supports changing the primary phone number to an email address on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Open Settings or System Settings, select your name, then go to Sign-In & Security. Select your primary phone number, then choose Remove from Account or turn off Primary Phone Number.
Choose Add New Primary Phone or Email. Select Existing Email Address or New iCloud Email Address, then follow the onscreen steps to enter and verify the new primary email address.
You may also see a prompt to make this change if you no longer own the primary mobile number.
Keep a personal work or school account
You may be asked to change your Apple Account email when a business or school starts using its domain with Apple Business or Apple School Manager. To keep the account personal, choose the option to keep it as a personal Apple Account, then update the email address used with that account.
Change it to an email address that is not owned by the organization, or create an @icloud.com email address. Then use the normal primary-email change flow in Settings, System Settings, or account.apple.com.
If this method fails because the 30-day deadline already passed, sign in with the temporary Apple Account email address ending in @temporary.appleaccount.com, then change the primary email address from there.
Ignore older Apple ID paths
This fixes confusion from older guides, not the account itself.
Some older iPhone and iPad instructions point to Settings, your name, Sign In & Security, Email & Phone Numbers, Edit, then Remove.
Use the current route instead: open Sign-In & Security and select the primary email address directly.
Older web guides may also send you to appleid.apple.com.
Use account.apple.com, then open Sign-In and Security and Email & Phone Numbers.
Avoid the settings that cannot change it
The most common mistake is trying to change the sign-in email from a feature that only controls mail, purchases, forwarding, or app-level sharing.
Siri, Apple Intelligence, hardware buttons, keyboard shortcuts, uninstalling an app, App Store purchase settings, iTunes or Apple Music media-account pages, iCloud Mail aliases, Hide My Email forwarding settings, and Sign in with Apple app-level settings do not change the Apple Account primary email address.
Use Settings, System Settings, account.apple.com, the iCloud-only email flow, the phone-number-to-email flow for China mainland or India accounts, or the organization prompt flow when one of those matches your situation.
Take the quick path
For a regular personal Apple Account, use this shortest route.
- 1.Open Settings on iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on Mac.
- 2.Select your name, then open Sign-In & Security.
- 3.Select your primary email address.
- 4.Choose Remove from Account or turn off Primary Email.
- 5.Add or choose the new primary email address, then verify it using the onscreen steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my Apple ID email without an iPhone?
Often, yes. Sign in at account.apple.com, then go to Sign-In and Security > Email & Phone Numbers. Apple may redirect you to a trusted device when possible, and says that if you do not have a trusted device, you might be able to change your primary email address on the web.
Why don’t I see Remove from Account for my iCloud email?
Remove from Account is not shown when the only email address on the account is an iCloud email address. Use Change Email Address from Sign-In & Security on a supported device instead.
Can I use an email address that is already tied to another Apple Account?
No. Add-and-switch applies when the new sign-in email is not already on your account and is not associated with another Apple Account.
What happened to the old Apple ID website instructions?
Older guides often mention appleid.apple.com. The current account-management path uses account.apple.com, then Sign-In and Security > Email & Phone Numbers.
