To change the Wi-Fi network on an HP printer, choose the new network in its touchscreen wireless wizard, or restore Wi-Fi setup mode and reconnect through the HP app. Enter the new network’s password when prompted. Restoring setup mode prepares the printer for connection; you still need to complete wireless setup afterward.

If your printer has a touchscreen wireless wizard, start there. For a button-only printer, use the HP app and your model’s setup reset procedure. WPS, browser configuration, and model-specific printer software provide other routes on compatible printers.

The short version

  • Touchscreen route: Open the printer’s Wireless Setup Wizard, choose the destination network, and enter its password.
  • App route: Connect your setup device to the destination Wi-Fi, restore the printer’s setup mode, and add it in the HP app within two hours.
  • Button combinations: Use the setup reset procedure for your printer family because the controls and timing vary.
  • Other options: Compatible printers can connect through WPS or a browser-based wireless wizard.

Prepare your new network and setup device

Have the destination Wi-Fi name and password ready. For HP app setup, connect your computer or phone to that network, enable Bluetooth, and allow location access when requested on mobile. Switching your phone or computer to the new Wi-Fi does not independently change the printer’s saved credentials.

Install the HP app using the store link for your device on HP’s official app download page. Availability and printer support vary across Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11, macOS, iPhone, iPad, and Android. On platforms where the HP app has replaced HP Smart, use the current HP app workflow.

Check your model’s requirements before choosing a setup device. The OfficeJet Pro 9130b requires computer-based software setup rather than mobile setup. Wireless band, security, guest-network restrictions, and Ethernet handling also vary by model.

Change the network on the printer touchscreen

On HP wireless printers that offer the wizard, open Setup, Network, or Wireless settings, then select Wireless Setup Wizard. Choose the destination network and enter its password. Menu wording varies by model, so use the matching path below for the named printer families.

For OfficeJet Pro 9130 and 9130b printers, touch Menu, then under Utilities, open Settings > Network > Wi-Fi. Enable the Wi-Fi toggle, touch Wi-Fi Setup Wizard, and complete the network prompts.

On an Envy 6500, open Menu > Settings > Network, scroll to Restore Network Settings, and touch Restore. Wait for the scan, choose the destination network, enter its password, and connect. Add the printer again in HP software if necessary.

For compatible LaserJet Pro printers with a white-background touchscreen, open the Dashboard and touch Wireless > Setup > Wireless Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard. Then follow the control-panel prompts to choose the destination network and enter its security credentials.

On a compatible LaserJet Pro with the black-background interface, touch Connection Information > Network Wi-Fi Off > Settings > Wireless Setup Wizard. Choose the destination network, or touch Enter SSID and enter its name manually if it is absent. Enter its security credentials and touch OK.

Restore wireless setup mode for the HP app

For many button-only HP printers, hold Wireless + Cancel together for five seconds or until the wireless light blinks. Use the family-specific procedure instead for the models below. After restoring setup mode, complete app setup within two hours.

On DeskJet Plus 6000/6400 and ENVY 6000/6000e/6400e/Pro 6400 printers, hold the rear Wireless button for five seconds and wait for purple status lighting. For HP Tango, hold the rear Wi-Fi button for five seconds and wait for pulsing blue.

For wireless LaserJet M109 through M112 models, wake the printer with Resume/Cancel, then hold Wireless for more than 20 seconds until the Attention light blinks and release it. On wireless LaserJet MFP M139 through M142 models, wake it with Cancel, hold Wireless + Cancel for five seconds, and allow the printer to restart.

On wireless LaserJet M207 through M212 and MFP M232 through M237 models, press Cancel, then hold Information for five seconds until the buttons light. Press Wireless + Cancel together and wait 60 seconds before continuing.

For Smart Tank 5000/5100 wireless models, hold Information for five seconds until the buttons light. Then hold Wi-Fi + Cancel for five seconds until the Wi-Fi light blinks blue.

Connect to the new network in the HP app

Open the HP app and click the + button. On Add a device, click Choose an available printer for a previously used printer, or Set Up a New Printer for a printer not previously configured on that device. Select your printer and complete the network prompts, entering the destination Wi-Fi password when requested.

If an existing app entry needs to be removed before repeating setup, select your printer, scroll down, and click Remove from app. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode again, then add the printer and finish within two hours. Removing the entry alone does not replace the printer’s saved network credentials.

Once setup finishes, keep your setup device connected to the destination network. Bluetooth pairing alone does not change the printer’s saved Wi-Fi network, so complete the app’s wireless setup prompts.

Use WPS with a compatible router

Use WPS push-button pairing when both your printer and router support it. On a touchscreen printer offering WPS, open Setup, Network, or Wireless Settings, then select Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Select Push Button, then Start. Within two minutes, hold the router’s WPS button for three to five seconds or until pairing starts.

For button-only printers covered by HP’s general WPS procedure, hold Wi-Fi for five seconds until its light flashes. Within two minutes, hold the router’s WPS button for three to five seconds or until pairing starts. Wait for the printer’s wireless light to stop flashing.

DeskJet 6000/6400, ENVY 6000/6400, and Tango families instead press and hold the rear Wi-Fi + Power buttons together until the printer’s light starts flashing. Start WPS on the router within two minutes, then wait for the light to stop flashing. Use your model’s specified timing when it differs from the general procedure.

If Windows displays an Enter WPS PIN prompt, HP recommends canceling it and using the HP app. That Windows prompt is separate from router-side WPS PIN registration.

Change wireless settings through a browser

A compatible printer’s Embedded Web Server, or EWS, lets you configure Wi-Fi in a browser. Keep your device on the printer’s existing local network, find the printer’s IP address, and enter it in the browser address bar. Authenticate when requested, then open Network > Wireless (802.11) > Wireless Setup Wizard. Choose the destination network, enter its password, and reconnect your device to that network afterward.

You can also open the EWS from the HP app by selecting your printer and clicking Advanced Settings. The alternate app path is Printer Settings > View all > Advanced Settings. Authenticate if requested, then complete Network > Wireless (802.11) > Wireless Setup Wizard with the destination network and password. This route requires a locally reachable printer that offers the wireless wizard.

For compatible printers broadcasting a temporary setup network, restore Wi-Fi setup mode and connect your device to HP=Setup <Your printer name> in its Wi-Fi list. Browse to 192.168.223.1, enter the printer-label PIN when requested, and click Network > Wireless > Wireless Setup Wizard > Next. Select the destination network, enter its password, and reconnect your device to that Wi-Fi afterward.

Wi-Fi Direct provides another temporary connection on printers supporting both Wi-Fi Direct and the EWS wireless wizard. Find the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct name and password on its information report or control panel, connect your device to that network, and browse to 192.168.223.1. Enter the printer-label PIN if requested, then open Network > Wireless (802.11) > Wireless Setup Wizard.

Choose the destination network in the wizard and enter its password. Reconnect your device to your normal Wi-Fi afterward. Joining the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network alone does not connect the printer to your router.

Use your model’s Windows printer software

For DeskJet 2800e and 4200e printers with the applicable Windows HP printer software, open the software and select Tools > Device Setup & Software > Reconfigure Wireless Settings. Complete the wireless configuration prompts. These labels belong to the model’s printer software rather than the HP app.

To get software supplied for your printer and operating system, open HP’s printer software download page, enter the serial number, product number, or product name, and click Submit. Select your operating system and version to see the available packages. Software availability varies by model and operating system.

Repeat setup or reset the printer when needed

If you need to repeat app setup, restore the correct Wi-Fi setup mode and add the printer again within two hours. On compatible touchscreen printers, HP also provides a network reset through Wireless or Setup, then Network setup or Settings, followed by Restore Network Settings. After restoring the network settings, run Wireless Setup Wizard again and enter the new network’s credentials.

A full factory reset changes broader settings and serves as a recovery step. Use only the procedure that applies to your model when you reset an HP printer. After the reset and restart, repeat wireless setup to select the destination network.

On compatible printers, open the EWS directly or select your printer in the HP app and click Advanced Settings. Open Settings or System, then Restore Defaults. For most models, select Restore Factory Defaults or Factory, click Restore Factory Defaults, and click Yes. For applicable LaserJets, use Service > Restore defaults and click OK instead.

On touchscreen printers covered by HP’s general reset procedure, touch Setup or Menu, then open Tools, or Printer Maintenance > Restore. Touch Restore Factory Defaults, then confirm with Yes, Continue, or Restore, depending on the displayed button. After the printer restarts, repeat wireless setup.

For DeskJet and ENVY models covered by HP’s general hardware reset procedure, open the cartridge access door and hold Power + Wireless for at least three seconds. After approximately 20 seconds, close the door and repeat wireless setup. Model-specific exceptions apply, so do not use this combination as a universal HP reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you change an HP printer from USB to Wi-Fi?

Yes, if your HP printer supports both USB and wireless connections. Turn off the printer and computer, disconnect their USB cable, then turn both on. Remove the USB printer’s app entry if necessary, restore Wi-Fi setup mode, and complete wireless setup in the HP app.

Can you keep the old Wi-Fi name and password after replacing a router?

You can configure a replacement router with the previous network name and password if its wireless settings are compatible. Reusing those credentials may let your HP printer reconnect, but this is not an HP guarantee for every model. Turn off the old router if it is no longer needed.

Should you use HP Print and Scan Doctor to reconnect the printer?

Use the HP app’s supported setup workflow instead. HP retired Print and Scan Doctor on May 27, 2025, says it is no longer maintained, and recommends removing it.

Does a factory reset remove the printer from your HP account or cancel Instant Ink?

A full factory reset does not automatically remove the printer from your HP account or cancel Instant Ink. Handle those separately from changing the printer’s Wi-Fi.
