To change your Razer keyboard color, open Razer Synapse 4, select your keyboard, then choose LIGHTING > EFFECTS > Quick Effects > Static and select a color. For different colors on individual keys, use the Razer Chroma App on a keyboard with individually addressable LEDs.
The Windows steps below use Windows 11 menus. Your keyboard determines which colors, effects, and lighting zones you can change, and supported models also offer lighting shortcuts without Synapse.
The short version
- One color: Select Static under your keyboard’s Quick Effects in Synapse 4.
- Individual keys: Use STUDIO in the Razer Chroma App on keyboards with individually addressable LEDs.
- Keyboard shortcuts: Supported models let you select effects and cycle preset colors without Synapse.
- Color keeps changing: Check whether Windows Dynamic Lighting, a game, or another lighting controller is overriding your selection.

Set one color in Razer Synapse
Get Razer Synapse 4 if your compatible Windows keyboard needs its lighting software. Choose Download for Windows, then open Synapse 4 and select your keyboard from the dashboard.
Open LIGHTING > EFFECTS > Quick Effects, select Static, then choose your preferred color. Choose another available effect if you want animation, and adjust any color and animation controls that effect offers. The available effects and lighting zones depend on your keyboard model.
Adjust the slider under BRIGHTNESS on the keyboard’s LIGHTING page if the chosen color is too dim or too bright. Brightness changes light output, not the LED hue. If you want the lighting off, follow the steps to turn off your keyboard backlight.
Check which Synapse version an older set of instructions uses before following its menus. Razer ended Synapse 3 updates and cloud services on February 3, 2026, although previously installed devices remain configurable.
Give individual keys different colors
For a custom layout, get the Razer Chroma App using Download for Windows. In Synapse 4, select your keyboard, open LIGHTING > Advanced Effects, then open the Razer Chroma App.
Choose STUDIO, then select Static under ADD EFFECT. Select the keyboard LEDs with the selection, pen, or fill tools, configure their color, and click SAVE. You can select another available effect under ADD EFFECT if you want an animated design.
To change an existing design, select its effect layer and the LEDs you want to edit. Adjust Color, Properties, Playback, or Region as supported by that effect, then click SAVE again.
Your keyboard needs individually addressable LEDs to display different colors on individual keys. A single-zone keyboard cannot display true per-key colors, and a multizone keyboard remains limited to its physical lighting zones.
To remove an unwanted effect layer, right-click it, select Delete, then click SAVE. Removing a layer can reveal another layer underneath. To remove its effect from selected LEDs only, select the layer and those LEDs, choose Clear Selection, then click SAVE.
Change lighting with keyboard shortcuts
On supported Razer keyboards, you can select onboard effects without Synapse. For models using the standard shortcut group, hold Fn + Ctrl and press 2 for Static, then repeat that combination to cycle its preset colors.
While holding Fn + Ctrl, press 1 for Off, 3 for Breathing, or 4 for Spectrum cycling. With the same modifiers held, press 5 for Wave, 6 for Reactive, or 7 for Starlight. Repeating a color-capable shortcut cycles its colors, while repeating the Wave shortcut changes its direction.
Use these combinations only if your exact model appears in Razer’s onboard shortcut tables, which include specified BlackWidow, DeathStalker, and Huntsman variants. Check your model’s table before using additional combinations because the extra effects differ between keyboard families.
On the Reclusa X Mini 65%, use Fn + Spacebar instead of Fn + Ctrl as the shortcut modifier. Follow that model’s table when choosing an effect or cycling its preset colors.
Change colors on a Mac
On a supported Apple silicon Mac, download Razer Synapse for Mac. Check Razer’s supported Mac peripheral list first, since Windows compatibility alone does not establish Mac compatibility. Install and open the application, then sign in or select Continue as guest.
Select your keyboard from the dashboard and open LIGHTING. Under EFFECTS, choose the lighting effect you want and adjust its available color settings.
Use Windows Dynamic Lighting instead
On Windows 11, you can control compatible HID LampArray keyboards through Windows lighting settings. Check that your exact keyboard appears on Razer’s Dynamic Lighting compatibility list before using this method.
On Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, then turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices. Select your keyboard’s device card for individual controls, or use the global controls below the device cards. Under Effects, choose the solid-color effect and select a color, or choose an available animated effect.
When another controller overrides Windows, open Background light control and move the Dynamic Lighting Background Controller to the top. Turn off Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting if you do not want foreground apps to override your Windows selection.
Switch saved colors and match other devices
Once you have configured Chroma profiles, open the Razer Chroma App and choose STUDIO. Open the Chroma Profiles dropdown and select the profile you want to use.
To match your keyboard to another Razer device’s quick effect, open Synapse and select the device whose lighting you want to copy. Open LIGHTING, then click Apply to other Chroma-enabled devices under EFFECTS. Some device interfaces call this control Chroma Sync.
Check that both devices support the selected effect within a compatible Synapse version. Razer does not support lighting synchronization across different Synapse generations.
Keep your selected color from changing
If a game or Chroma application takes control after you select a color, open the Razer Chroma App and choose CHROMA APPS. Disable the application’s toggle to return control to your normal lighting. Chroma Visualizer also overrides quick and advanced effects while active, so disable the visualizer when you want those effects back.
When Windows Dynamic Lighting takes over, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting on Windows 11. Turn off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, then open Synapse 4 > Settings > DEVICE LIGHTING and select Chroma RGB. Set your keyboard effect again afterward.
Keep one lighting controller active when resolving conflicts. Close competing RGB applications before trying your selection again, particularly when using a third-party controller such as SignalRGB.
Check your keyboard and connection limits
Check whether your keyboard has RGB LEDs or fixed-color backlighting. Software cannot add colors to fixed-color LEDs. For example, the Razer Pro Type Ultra has white backlighting, so adjusting brightness will not turn its LEDs red, blue, or green.
If you use a BlackWidow V3 Pro or V3 Mini over Bluetooth, account for the connection mode when an advanced effect does not work. Razer documents Bluetooth limitations for Studio and Visualizer on those models.
Do not assume onboard profile memory stores every Studio effect. For a software-driven design, keep the required Razer software running, since onboard profile memory alone does not guarantee that the effect continues after you close or uninstall Synapse.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you change the keyboard color on a Razer Blade laptop?
