You need to change your Google password, but the right path depends on whether you can still sign in. The account page handles a normal password change, Account Recovery handles a forgotten password, and managed work or school accounts can depend on admin policy. Start with the route that matches your situation, then avoid browser-saved password edits that only update autofill.

1. Start at your Google Account page when you still know the password

Use this route when you can sign in and simply want a new Google Account password. Go to myaccount.google.com, open Security & sign-in, and under How you sign in to Google, select Password. Sign in again if Google asks, enter the new password, then select Change Password.

This changes the Google Account password itself. If Google asks you to choose a new password because it detected a possibly unsafe password or suspicious account state, create one you do not use elsewhere and continue securing the account.

2. Change it from Android settings without opening a browser

Open the Settings app, then tap Google and tap Your name. Choose Manage your Google Account, open Security & sign-in, and under How you sign in to Google, tap Password. Sign in if prompted, enter the new password, then tap Change Password.

On an Android phone or tablet with Google services, the password control is built into the system settings.

3. Use Gmail on iPhone or iPad if that is where you are signed in

The iPhone and iPad route runs through Gmail: tap your profile picture or initial, choose Manage your Google Account, open Personal info, then under Other info and preferences for Google services, tap Password. Enter the new password and tap Next.

If you do not use Gmail on the iPhone or iPad, go to myaccount.google.com in a browser and use the account-page method instead.

4. Reset a forgotten password through Account Recovery

  1. 1.Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery, or select Forgot password? during sign-in.
  2. 2.Answer Google's verification questions.
  3. 3.Reset your password when Google prompts you.
  4. 4.Choose a password not already used with that Google Account.

When you cannot remember the password, stop trying variations and use Google's recovery flow. It confirms that the account is yours before it lets you set a new password.

If someone else changed your password, use the same Google Account recovery flow, follow the prompts to confirm ownership, and reset the password when Google allows recovery.

This only applies to a child Google Account created in Family Link when the child is under 13, or under the applicable age in the country. Open the Family Link app, select your child, tap Controls, and choose Account settings. Select Change password, sign in with your Google Account information, enter a new password, and tap Change.

If your child has 2-Step Verification on, tap Got it to confirm. Google says this Family Link method does not work for a previously existing account that only had supervision added later.

6. Check your work or school account rules before retrying

A Google Workspace or Cloud Identity account can follow your organization's settings. The normal recovery button is not always the final answer.

If your organization enables self-service recovery, use Forgot password? or the Google Account recovery flow after a recovery email or phone is configured. If 2-Step Verification is on, only a recovery email address works, not a recovery phone. This self-service path does not apply when your organization uses SSO or Password Sync, and it does not work for users under 18. Admins enable that path in Admin console > Menu > Security > Authentication > Account recovery > User account recovery > Allow users and non-super admins to recover their account > Save.

If your organization uses Microsoft Active Directory with Password Sync, change the Active Directory password instead. Google says users can be redirected to Active Directory when Password Sync is used and direct Google password changes are blocked.

7. Reset a Workspace user password from the Admin console

This section applies to Google Workspace and Cloud Identity administrators with password reset privileges. Open Google Admin console, go to Menu > Directory > Users, point to the user, and select Reset password. Choose Automatically generate a password or Create password, optionally check Ask the user to change their password, then select Reset.

Choose Copy Password, then Done; or choose Email Password, then Send. From the user page, go to Security > Sign in cookies > Reset.

A super admin recovering their own administrator account uses accounts.google.com/signin/recovery, then Try another way. If no recovery info is available, Google's documented path uses a requested CNAME DNS record before the wizard lets the admin create a new password or use the emailed reset link after Google verifies the record.

8. Avoid fixes that only edit saved passwords

Chrome and Google Password Manager can edit a saved login, but that does not change or reset the Google Account password on Google's servers. Use the Chrome password editor only when you need to correct the saved credential after the real password has already changed.

The desktop path is Chrome > More > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > select the saved password > Edit > Save. On Android, the path is Chrome > More > Settings > Google Password Manager > select the saved password > Edit > Save.

Do not use phone-call or third-party password recovery services. Google says you cannot call Google for help signing in and that Google does not work with services claiming to provide account or password support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset my Google password without my old password?

Why does my work Google password reset look different?

Google Workspace and Cloud Identity accounts can be controlled by organization policy. Your admin may enable self-service recovery, reset the password in the Admin console, or route password changes through Microsoft Active Directory with Password Sync.

Does editing a password in Chrome reset my Google Account password?

No. Chrome and Google Password Manager edit the saved credential used for autofill. They do not change or reset the Google Account password on Google's servers.
