Changing a laptop keyboard color only works when the keyboard has RGB hardware. If your laptop supports it, Windows 11 or your laptop maker's app can usually change the color, effects, brightness, and profiles in a few minutes.
Start with Windows Dynamic Lighting, then move to the brand app if Windows does not show your keyboard or the color controls do not stick.
Try Windows Dynamic Lighting First
On a compatible Windows 11 laptop, open Settings, choose Personalization, then select Dynamic Lighting.

Use Your Laptop Maker's Lighting App
This applies when your laptop has RGB lighting but Windows does not expose the right controls. Gaming laptops often keep keyboard zones, per-key color, effects, profiles, and brightness inside the manufacturer's own app.
On ASUS ROG, TUF, and supported ASUS notebooks, open Armoury Crate, go to Aura Sync, then choose Sync devices. Confirm the device is synchronized, then open Aura Sync and Aura Effects to customize lighting.
On Alienware and supported Dell G-series systems, open Alienware Command Center, then choose AlienFX. Use the lighting tab to manage zones and adjust the lighting effect, color palette, brightness, tempo, duration, and direction.
On HP OMEN systems, open OMEN Gaming Hub. OMEN Light Studio is a separate app that is not included in OMEN Gaming Hub, so click the install icon on the OMEN Light Studio card to get it from the Microsoft Store, then launch it with the Launch button on that card, the OMEN Light Studio menu item, or the Start menu. Select the keyboard or lighting zone, choose an effect such as Static, ambient, audio visualizer, or wave, use the color picker, adjust brightness or animation speed, and save the profile.
On Acer Predator notebooks, open PredatorSense from the dedicated key, desktop icon, or Start menu. Click Lighting, change a lighting profile or create a new one, then close PredatorSense to save the change.
Choose the Right MSI App
This fixes the common MSI problem where the wrong utility is installed for the notebook.
Go to MSI's official website and enter your notebook's full model name in the search box.
Open the product page and select Specifications.
Find Keyboard and look for Per-Key RGB Backlight Keyboard or RGB Backlight Keyboard.
Open the product page's Support area.
Choose Utility & Others.
If SteelSeries GG appears, download and install it.
Open SteelSeries GG and click MSI PER KEY RGB KEYBOARD from the Home or Gear page.
If MSI lists its own utility instead, open MSI Center and install Mystic Light from Feature Sets.

On most ASUS notebooks, press FN+F7 repeatedly to increase keyboard backlight brightness and eventually disable it.

On ASUS gaming notebooks, press FN+Up to increase brightness.

On Lenovo Legion laptops with multi-color keyboard lights, press Fn+Space to cycle factory lighting effects.
If Windows Dynamic Lighting is enabled and set as first priority, Lenovo's preconfigured effects are deactivated.

If media keys are disabled on Acer, hold Fn while pressing the backlight media keys.

Give Your RGB App Control Again
Windows 11 can let compatible apps and games control lighting when they are in the foreground. Open Settings, choose Personalization, then select Dynamic Lighting, and turn on Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting when you want a game or RGB app to override a static Windows color.
For ASUS systems, open Settings, choose Personalization, select Dynamic Lighting, then use Background light control and drag Armoury Crate - Aura Sync to the highest priority. To make Armoury Crate handle ROG lighting instead of Windows, turn off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, return to Armoury Crate, and open your device page.
For Razer devices, open Razer Synapse 4, go to Settings, then DEVICE LIGHTING, and switch DEVICE LIGHTING to Chroma RGB.
Fix Missing Lighting Controls
The most common cause is the wrong lighting app, an outdated app, or firmware that does not expose RGB controls.
For Alienware or Dell G-series systems, install or update Alienware Command Center from Dell's official support and driver page for your exact system or keyboard.
If the Alienware Pro Wireless Gaming Keyboard is missing in lighting controls, check that Alienware Command Center is v6.1 or later.
For HP OMEN, Victus, and Pavilion Gaming systems, install OMEN Gaming Hub from the Microsoft Store or HP.com.
Install OMEN Light Studio separately from the Microsoft Store, then launch it from the OMEN Gaming Hub home page.
For Acer Nitro and Predator laptops, open Acer's Drivers and Manuals page.
Enter the laptop model or SNID.

For Lenovo Legion Pro 5 configurations missing RGB settings in Lenovo Vantage, first update Lenovo Vantage itself to the latest version, then update to BIOS version 22 or later.

Change Razer Blade Keyboard Colors
This fixes Razer Blade lighting when you want presets, custom Chroma effects, or onboard lighting changes.
Open Razer Synapse 4.
Select your Razer device from the device list.
Click the LIGHTING tab.
Choose Quick Effects for a preset.
Choose Advanced Effects or Chroma Studio for custom colors and effects.
For Chroma Studio, open Razer Chroma.

Select Studio from the top tab.
Add the Chroma effect you want.

Know When the Color Cannot Be Changed
A white-only, blue-only, red-only, or basic backlit keyboard cannot be turned into RGB with software. Check the laptop's official specifications for RGB Backlight Keyboard, Per-Key RGB Backlight Keyboard, or 4-zone RGB.
MacBooks have brightness control, not built-in keyboard color control. Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, select Keyboard, and drag the Keyboard brightness slider; drag it all the way left to turn the backlight off, or turn on Adjust keyboard brightness in low light.
HP also separates basic backlit keyboards from RGB keyboards. A basic backlit keyboard will not appear as RGB in OMEN Light Studio, and HP's 4-zone keyboards cannot assign different colors per key.
If your specs do not list RGB and the OEM app has no lighting or color controls, use brightness control only; if your specs do list RGB, install the exact lighting utility for your laptop model.
