Changing an email password on iPhone starts with the account provider, not the Mail app password field from older tutorials. Once Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL, or your work account has the new password, your iPhone just needs a fresh sign-in. Use the matching path below, then fix Mail or Outlook if syncing stops.

Change your Gmail password on iPhone

This fixes the actual password for a Gmail or Google Account used on your iPhone.

Open the Gmail app.

Tap your profile picture or initial.

Tap Manage your Google Account.

Tap Personal info.

Under Other info and preferences for Google services, tap Password.

Enter your new password, then tap Next.

Use the browser when Gmail is not installed

No Gmail app? Safari, Chrome, or any iPhone browser can get you to the same Google Account password screen.

Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in to your Google Account.

Open Personal info, then tap Password under Other info and preferences for Google services. Enter the new password and tap Next.

If this method fails because you do not know the current password, use Google account recovery and choose a password that has not already been used with that account.

Change your iCloud Mail password in Settings

Your iCloud Mail password is your Apple Account password, so the change happens in Settings rather than inside Mail.

Open Settings, tap [your name], then tap Sign-In & Security. Choose Change Password and follow the onscreen instructions.

Apple says this works from a trusted iPhone that is already signed in with two-factor authentication. You can also sign in at account.apple.com, go to Sign-In and Security, choose Password, and follow the prompts.

Change Outlook Hotmail or Live password

For a personal Microsoft email address, use Microsoft’s account site from your iPhone browser.

  1. 1.Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in.
  2. 2.Open Security.
  3. 3.Select Change Password.
  4. 4.Enter the new password.
  5. 5.Select Save.

Fix Apple Mail after the password changes

The most common cause is that Apple Mail is still trying to connect with the old sign-in session.

On iOS 18 or later, open Settings, then tap Apps. Tap Mail, then tap Mail Accounts. On iOS 17 or earlier, open Settings, tap Mail, then tap Accounts.

Choose the email account that stopped working. Tap Sign Out or Delete Account.

Return to that same Mail Accounts screen, called Accounts on iOS 17 or earlier, then tap Add Account. Choose the provider shown on screen, then follow the prompts and enter the current email address and password.

For a less common provider, ISP email, or custom-domain account, tap Add Other Account, then Mail Account. Enter your name, email address, password, and description, then continue with the IMAP or POP details when prompted.

Update Yahoo or AOL from the app

Open the Yahoo Mail app or another Yahoo mobile app, then tap the profile icon.

If you are using Yahoo Mail, tap Manage Accounts, then tap Account. In other Yahoo mobile apps, tap Account info instead.

Tap Security.

Scroll to the bottom and tap Change password.

Enter the new password, then tap Continue.

For AOL, open the AOL mobile app, tap Menu, tap Manage Accounts, tap Account info, then tap Security settings. Enter your security code, tap Change password, and enter and confirm the new password.

If Yahoo or AOL is set up in Apple Mail, remove and add the account again after the change.

Manage work and school email accounts

This applies when your email address is managed by an employer, school, or organization. The password option depends on what the organization allows.

For a Microsoft work or school account, sign in at myaccount.microsoft.com with your current password.

Select Change Password from the left navigation pane, type the old password, create and confirm the new one, then select Submit.

When you do not know the current password, use passwordreset.microsoftonline.com and follow your organization’s verification prompts.

If the reset or change option is not available, contact your administrator.

Repair Outlook for iOS sync

This fixes Outlook for iOS after you changed the password at Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo, iCloud, Exchange, IMAP, POP, or another provider.

Change the password at your email provider’s website first.

Return to Outlook on your iPhone.

Wait for Outlook to detect the sync error.

Enter the new password when Outlook asks for it.

If it still will not sync, open Outlook settings, tap Accounts, select the account, then tap Remove Account. Add it again from Settings, Accounts, Add Account, Email Account, then authenticate with the new password.

Create app passwords when required

Use these only when your provider requires a separate password for Apple Mail or another third-party mail app.

  1. 1.For iCloud Mail in non-Apple apps, sign in at account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security, select App-Specific Passwords, then choose Generate an app-specific password.
  2. 2.For Yahoo, sign in to the Yahoo Account Security page, use External connections, then choose Create app password.
  3. 3.For AOL, sign in to the AOL Account Security page and choose Generate app password or Generate and manage app passwords.
  4. 4.After changing iCloud access, Apple says resetting or changing the main Apple Account password automatically revokes app-specific passwords.
  5. 5.Older guides often point to Settings, Mail, Accounts, then password fields inside account server settings. Current vendor guidance replaces that with provider password changes, secure sign-in, app passwords, or removing and re-adding the account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change every email password from the iPhone Mail app?

No. For Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo, AOL, iCloud, and most providers, change the password through the provider’s app, website, or Apple Account settings first. Then reauthenticate Mail if it stops syncing.

What should I do if I forgot my email password?

Use the provider’s recovery flow. Google account recovery, Yahoo Sign-in Helper, AOL Sign-in Helper, and Microsoft work or school password reset are the supported options.

Why does Mail still ask for a password after I changed it?

Mail may still have the old sign-in session. On iOS 18 or later, remove the account from Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts; on iOS 17 or earlier, use Settings > Mail > Accounts. Then add it again and sign in with the new password.

Do Yahoo or AOL app passwords change when my main password changes?

Yahoo says app passwords remain active even after the main account password changes, so delete the old app password if you want to invalidate it. AOL provides a separate app-password flow for third-party email apps.
