Blocking someone in Messenger stops an unwanted conversation at the source instead of just hiding it. The fastest fix is usually inside the chat itself, but Facebook settings, Page tools, and Messenger Kids controls cover the cases where the chat path is not enough. Start with the method that matches where you are using Messenger.

Block Someone From The Messenger App

Use this when the person is already in your Messenger chat list.

  1. 1.Open Messenger and go to Chats.
  2. 2.Open the conversation with the person you want to block.
  3. 3.Tap their name at the top of the chat.
  4. 4.Scroll down and tap Block.
  5. 5.Tap Block [Name] to confirm.

Use Messenger On A Computer

This method applies when you are using Messenger in a browser on a computer, including Messenger.com or Facebook on the web. It also lets you choose between blocking only Messenger contact and blocking the person's Facebook profile too.

Open the conversation with the person you want to block, then click Information.

Under Privacy & support, click Block.

Choose Block messages and calls to stop messages and calls in Messenger.

Choose Block on Facebook to block the person's Facebook profile as well, then click Block to confirm.

Know What Blocking Does Across Facebook

When you block someone's Facebook profile on Messenger, Meta says that also blocks their profile on Facebook.

That is different from choosing Block messages and calls on a computer, which blocks Messenger contact without necessarily blocking the Facebook profile.

For the broadest block, go to the person's Facebook profile, open Options or More, choose Block, then confirm with Confirm on a computer or Block in the mobile app.

The same rule applies to a Facebook Page. Blocking the Page from its profile or Page stops contact from that Page through Messenger too.

Fix A Missing Block Button

The most common cause is that you are using a mobile browser surface where some Messenger blocking features are not available.

Open the regular Messenger app on iPhone, iPad, or Android.

Go to Chats, open the conversation, and tap their name.

Tap Block, then confirm with Block [Name].

On a computer, open Messenger in a web browser, open the conversation, click Information, choose Block under Privacy & support, and confirm with Block.

Block From Facebook Settings

This method is useful when you do not want to open the conversation, or when you want to block the Facebook profile or Page directly. A Facebook block also blocks Messenger contact from that profile or Page.

In the Facebook mobile app, tap Menu.

Scroll to Settings & privacy, tap Settings, then go to Audience and visibility and tap Blocking.

Tap Add to blocked list, enter the profile or Page name, find the correct result, and tap Block.

On a computer, click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.

Choose Settings & privacy, click Settings, open Blocking under Audience and visibility, then use Edit next to Block profiles and Pages to add the profile or Page.

Block A Page Or Business In Messenger

Use the Page path for Facebook Pages and the business path for business conversations.

  1. 1.For a Page in the mobile app, open Messenger, go to Chats, and open the conversation with the Page.
  2. 2.Tap the Page name at the top, scroll down, tap Block, then tap Block again to confirm.
  3. 3.On a computer, open the Page conversation, click Conversation information to the right of the video call button, click Privacy and support, then click Block. Click Block messages and calls, then click Block to confirm.
  4. 4.For a business conversation on Android, open the chat from Chats, tap Information, tap Block, then tap BLOCK. On the iPhone or iPad app, open the chat, tap the business name at the top, tap Block, tap Block messages and calls, then tap Block to confirm.

Handle Messenger Kids Blocking

Open the Messenger Kids app on the child's device.

Tap the person's photo to open the conversation.

Tap the person's photo at the top of the chat.

Tap Block.

Tap Block again to finish.

Parents are notified when a child blocks someone and can review blocking activity in Parent Dashboard.

Remove A Messenger Kids Contact As A Parent

This applies when you are managing a child's Messenger Kids account as a parent and want to remove an approved contact relationship. It is separate from the child's own Block button.

Open the Facebook app and tap Menu.

Scroll down and tap Messenger Kids.

If it is not visible, tap See more and scroll until you find Messenger Kids.

Tap the child's name, then use the child account's contact controls to remove the contact.

Skip Old Messenger Blocking Advice

Use the regular Messenger app or Messenger.com. Older paths do not fix current Messenger blocking problems.

Do not use Messenger Lite blocking instructions.

Do not look for the standalone Messenger desktop app for Mac or Windows; Meta no longer offers it as a current surface.

Do not rely on older paths such as Privacy, People, and Blocked.

Install or update Messenger from Meta's Messenger download page through the App Store on iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on Android.

On a computer, use Messenger.com in a web browser.
