Spam calls and texts are a constant nuisance, but your Samsung Galaxy A56 has several built-in tools to fight back. The key feature is Caller ID and spam protection, which uses a global database to identify and warn you about suspected spam before you even answer.
I'd start by turning on the main spam filter. It's the single most effective step you can take. Open your Phone app and tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner. From there, go to Settings and then select Caller ID and spam protection.
Turn On Spam Protection
On the Caller ID and spam protection screen, you'll see a master toggle at the top. Slide it to the on position. This enables Samsung's Smart Call feature, which identifies unknown numbers and flags potential spam. Right below that, you can toggle on Block spam and scam calls to have the phone automatically reject them.
With these settings on, your phone will screen incoming calls against a constantly updated list. Suspected spam calls will show a red warning on your screen, and if you have auto-block enabled, they won't even ring through. This works for both calls and SMS texts.
Block a Number Directly
If a specific number is bothering you, you can block it manually from a few different places. The quickest way is from your recent calls list. Open the Phone app, go to the Recents tab, and find the number.
Tap on the number's entry to open its details page. At the bottom, you'll see an option labeled Block number. Tap it and confirm. You can also report it as spam at the same time, which helps improve the database for everyone.
You can do the same thing from your Messages app. Open a conversation from the number you want to block, tap the three-dot menu in the top right, and select Block number. This will stop all future messages and calls from that contact.
Manage Your Blocked List
To see all the numbers you've blocked or to manually add one, go back to your Phone app settings. Tap the three-dot menu, go to Settings, and then select Block numbers.
This screen shows your complete blocked list. You can tap the red minus icon next to any entry to unblock it. At the top of this screen, you can also toggle on Block unknown/private numbers. This sends all calls from hidden numbers straight to voicemail.
Report Spam Texts to Your Carrier
For particularly bad spam texts, you can report them directly to your mobile carrier. Just forward the unwanted message to the number 7726 (which spells "SPAM"). You'll usually get a confirmation text back.
This action helps carriers identify spam patterns at the network level. It's a good habit to get into, as it contributes to better filtering for all users on your network, whether they're on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or another provider.
Consider a Third-Party App
If you want even more aggressive filtering, you can install a dedicated app from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store. Apps like Truecaller have massive, community-powered databases of spam numbers.
During setup, these apps will ask for permission to manage your calls and messages. Once granted, they can identify almost every unknown caller and provide extremely granular blocking options. They're a great supplement to Samsung's built-in tools.
