Steam shows you as offline when your Friends & Chat status is set to Offline or Invisible, Friends & Chat is signed out, or the Steam client is stuck in Offline Mode. The fastest fix is in the Friends & Chat status menu. Use the steps below to appear online again and fix the settings that stop your current game from showing.
Switch to Online in Friends and Chat
The most common cause is that your Steam presence is set to Offline or Invisible inside Friends & Chat.
Open Steam and click Friends & Chat in the lower-right corner.
Click the status or profile dropdown next to your username.
Select Online.
Your friends will now see you as online in Steam chat.
Use the Steam desktop menu
Steam also lets you change presence from the desktop menu bar. Open Steam, select Friends in the top menu bar, then choose Online.
This path helps when the Friends & Chat button is not in view, or when you are already working from the main Steam window.
When the full client is in Offline Mode, restore Steam’s online connection first, then return to Friends and choose Online.
Leave Steam Offline Mode
This fixes the Steam client being disconnected from Steam services, not just a hidden chat status.
Open Steam while it is in Offline Mode.
Click Steam in the upper-left menu.
Choose Go Online....
Select Restart and Go Online.
After Steam restarts, open Friends & Chat.
Set your status to Online.
Make Steam sign in to Friends automatically
The most common cause here is that Steam launches while Friends & Chat stays signed out.

Install or open Steam Chat on your phone.
Sign in with your Steam account.
Open the profile or status control from the friends and chat view.
Select Online.
On Android, install Steam Chat by Valve Corporation from Google Play. On iPhone, install Steam Chat by Valve from the App Store.
Keep the Steam Chat app updated so the current status controls stay available.
Change your status on Steam Deck
The most common cause on Steam Deck is the same as desktop Steam: your Friends status is set to something other than Online.
Press STEAM, or open the Steam icon in the bottom-left corner.
Open Friends.
Select your profile image.
Choose Online from the status or options menu.
When friends see you online but do not see your current game, check profile privacy next.
Show the game you are playing
Being Online and showing the current game title are separate Steam settings. If friends see you online but not in-game, open your Steam profile, choose Edit Profile, open Privacy Settings, and set My profile or Game details to Public or Friends Only.
A private game can create the same problem. Open that game’s Steam page or library entry, use its manage or privacy menu, and clear Mark as Private so that game’s ownership, activity, playtime, and in-game status show again.
If this method fails, return to Friends & Chat and set your status to Online again.
Fix connection blockers
Firewall, VPN, proxy, antivirus, and network-filtering tools block Steam or Friends & Chat from connecting. Quit Steam, disable the blocking app or add Steam to its allow list, then reopen Steam and choose Friends & Chat followed by Online.
On Windows, open Windows Security, go to Firewall & network protection, choose Allow an app through firewall, select Change settings, allow Steam or steam.exe on the right network type, and confirm with OK.
On macOS, the built-in firewall filters incoming connections only, so it does not stop Steam from signing in to Friends & Chat. Quit any VPN, proxy, content filter, or third-party security app, or add Steam to its allow list, then reopen Steam and set your status to Online. Use the Apple menu, System Settings, Network, Firewall, Options path only when an inbound Steam feature such as Remote Play or local file transfer is blocked.
On school, work, hotel, or other managed networks, ask the network administrator to permit Steam client traffic and Steam Community or Friends services. Skip old tray-icon status tips; use Friends & Chat or the Friends menu instead.
