The twenty phones below preserve a historical bestseller ranking published by The Daily Telegraph and reproduced by Windows Central in April 2013. The positions describe that dated list; they are not a ranking of all phones sold through 2026, and several reported totals need qualification.

Later compilations put the Nokia 1100 alongside the Nokia 1110 at about 250 million units and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus at 222.4 million combined. Wikipedia’s sales compilation flags disputed figures, so the numbers below are attributed historical estimates, with corrections where the accounts differ.

20 Nokia 2650

The historical list reported 35 million sales for Nokia’s entry-level clamshell. The Nokia 2650 was first made public in the second quarter of 2004, and its low price helped make it popular among buyers looking for a basic phone.

19 iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS was credited with around 35 million sales in the 2013 ranking. Apple unveiled it on June 8, 2009, and its improvements included voice control and a 3-megapixel camera capable of recording video.

18 Samsung Galaxy S II

The ranking put Galaxy S II sales at around 40 million units. Unveiled in February 2011, it combined a 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 1GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera in a body that was mostly 8.5mm thick.

17 Samsung Galaxy S III

The historical list also assigned the Galaxy S III around 40 million sales, a figure that should not be read as its final total. Wikipedia’s model entry later reported more than 80 million, while its sales compilation grouped the S III with the S III Mini at 70 million.

Samsung released the S III in May 2012 with Android 4.0.4. Features included S Voice, eye tracking, and increased storage options compared with its predecessor.

16 Nokia 6230

The 2013 ranking credited the Nokia 6230 with 50 million sales. Announced in October 2003 and released in February 2004, this Series 40 phone targeted business users and included a VGA camera, music playback, and expandable memory.

15 Nokia 3100

The Nokia 3100 exceeded 50 million sales in the historical account. Released in September 2003 and aimed primarily at younger buyers, it included a 128 by 128 pixel color display, GPRS, Pop-Port connectivity, and a lithium-ion battery.

14 Motorola StarTAC

The StarTAC was credited with 60 million sales, although that total is flagged as disputed in Wikipedia’s compilation. Launched in 1996, it became a notable early flip phone, but NEC had released a clamshell phone in 1991, so StarTAC was not the first ever.

13 Motorola C200

Windows Central’s reproduction of the ranking assigned the Motorola C200, a 2003 model, 60 million sales. That placed it between the StarTAC and iPhone 4S in the historical ordering, showing how prominently Motorola featured alongside Nokia in the list.

12 iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S was estimated at just over 60 million sales in the 2013 ranking. It reached stores in October 2011, introduced Siri, and shipped with iOS 5; its supported software generations eventually extended through iOS 9.

11 Nokia 5130

The Nokia 5130 was credited with 65 million sales in the historical ranking. It belonged to Nokia’s XpressMusic range and ran the Series 40 platform, preserving a place for that product family among the bestselling phones of the period.

10 Nokia 6010

The Nokia 6010’s reported total was 75 million units. Released in 2004, it offered a color interface and everyday tools including a calendar, voice commands, an alarm clock, a calculator, and a stopwatch.

9 Nokia 1208

The Nokia 1208 reached a reported 100 million sales. Announced in May 2007 and released in January 2008, it was closely related to the Nokia 1200, with a color display as an important distinction between the two models.

8 Nokia 1600

The Nokia 1600 was credited with 130 million sales. It belonged to Nokia’s Ultrabasic range and was released in June 2005, with a focus on prepaid services and customers in developing markets.

7 Motorola Razr V3

The historical ranking reported more than 130 million Razr V3 sales, though Wikipedia flags the figure as disputed. Released in 2004, the clamshell stood out for its thin profile, aluminum body, and metal keypad.

6 Nokia 2600

The Nokia 2600 was announced in 2004 and was credited with 135 million sales. This entry-level Series 30 phone had a color display but lacked a camera, Bluetooth, and radio, correcting features previously attributed to it.

5 Nokia 3310

The 2013 list used 136 million for the Nokia 3310, while Wikipedia’s model history reports 126 million. The original ranking position is retained here, but the conflicting totals should not be treated as interchangeable.

Nokia announced the phone in September 2000 as the successor to the 3210. Its reputation for durability and battery life helped make it one of the company’s most recognizable models.

4 Nokia 5230

The Nokia 5230 was credited with 150 million sales, a total flagged as disputed in Wikipedia’s compilation. Released in November 2009, it ran Symbian and offered a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 3G, Bluetooth, microSD support, and FM radio, but no Wi-Fi.

3 Nokia 1200

The Nokia 1200’s reported total was 150 million units. Announced in May 2007, this entry-level model focused on basic communication and affordability, with features including a monochrome display, a dust-resistant keypad, and an integrated flashlight.

2 Nokia 3210

The historical ranking assigned the Nokia 3210 160 million sales, although Wikipedia flags that total as disputed. Announced in March 1999, it combined an internal antenna with features such as T9 predictive text and targeted teenagers and young professionals.

1 Nokia 1110

The Nokia 1110 topped the historical list with about 250 million sales. Released in 2005, it targeted first-time phone users and offered basic calling and texting, along with features such as a speaking clock.

That ranking does not establish an exclusive all-time record. Later compilations also place the Nokia 1100 at about 250 million units, so the two models are commonly listed together at the top.

Updated October 2026: Identified the ranking’s historical basis, corrected model details, and qualified conflicting and disputed sales totals. The original article was published in March 2021.
