A black screen on your Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 can feel like the end of the line, but most of the time the phone is still running, just frozen or stuck. The display might be off while the phone vibrates or plays sounds, or a software crash may have taken everything down. Let's get it working again.

Force Restart the Z Flip 7

This is always the first move. Press and hold the Volume Down and Side key together for about 10 15 seconds. Keep holding even if the screen stays black, the Samsung logo will appear when the restart kicks in. This works even when the phone is completely unresponsive, and it won't erase any of your data.

Charge It Properly

A dead battery is the most common cause of a black screen. Plug your Z Flip 7 into a charger using a good USB-C cable and the original adapter, and wait at least 15 30 minutes. If you're using a non-Samsung wireless charger, the phone may not charge at all, the Z Flip 7 has known compatibility issues with third-party pads. Stick with the Samsung official wireless charger for the fastest 15W charging. If the battery was fully drained, it might take a few minutes before you see the charging icon pop up. Try a different cable and wall brick if nothing shows after half an hour.

Check the Screen Brightness (It's Simple)

Sometimes the screen looks black because the brightness is all the way down. Ask Google Assistant to "turn up the brightness" or swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open the quick settings panel and drag the brightness slider up. If your phone's auto-brightness sensor is confused, this can easily mimic a black screen.

Look for Physical Damage

Inspect the screen closely for cracks, dark spots, or signs of impact, especially along the hinge where the foldable display is most vulnerable. If the phone vibrates when you get a notification, plays sounds, or responds when you press the Side key for Bixby, the phone is alive but the display hardware might be toast. Under a bright light, you can sometimes see thin lines or a faint image that suggests the screen is damaged. If that's the case, you'll need a repair from Samsung or an authorized service center.

Boot into Recovery Mode

If a force restart doesn't work, try recovery mode. Power off the phone completely (if it's stuck on a black screen, you may need to hold Volume Down + Side key until it turns off, about 7 10 seconds). Then press and hold Volume Up and the Side key until the Samsung logo appears, then release both. You'll see the Android recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Reboot system now and press the Side key to select. That can clear a temporary software hang.

Restore Using a Computer

If recovery mode doesn't help, connect the Z Flip 7 to a PC or Mac with a USB-C cable. Download and open Smart Switch from Samsung's website. If the computer detects the phone, choose the Update option to reinstall the firmware without wiping your data. If that fails, you may need to use Emergency Recovery or Initialization (which wipes everything). On a Mac, use Smart Switch for Mac. This is essentially Samsung's version of what Apple calls recovery mode.

Check for Water or Moisture

The Z Flip 7 has some water resistance (IP48), but that doesn't cover water pressure or submersion. If the phone got wet, the black screen could be moisture inside the display connector. Power it off immediately and let it sit in a dry place for at least 24 48 hours. Don't use a hair dryer or put it in rice, rice dust can scratch the hinge and make things worse. If the screen stays dark after drying, liquid damage likely needs a professional look.

Use Samsung Members for Diagnostics

Open the Samsung Members app (if you can get the screen on even for a moment). Go to Support > Phone diagnostics and run the display test. This can tell you if the screen is physically damaged or if it's a software glitch. If the app isn't accessible because the screen is black, you can still access diagnostics by dialing *#0*# from the phone keypad (if the touch panel is partially working).

One Last Thing: The Charging Bug

Some Z Flip 7 units have a known issue where the phone stops charging before reaching 100% and requires unplugging and replugging the cable to finish. If your battery ran out because of this bug, the black screen is just a dead battery. Once you get it charging (try a different cable, center the phone on a Samsung wireless pad, or use the official 25W wired charger), give it 30 minutes of uninterrupted charge. If the screen still won't turn on, a soft reset (Volume Down + Side key) often wakes it up again.
