Two notable Nintendo Switch 2 games arrive in late March, with Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game launching March 25. Publisher Private Division and developer Weta Workshop confirmed the cozy life simulation will hit Nintendo's next-generation console exactly on Tolkien Reading Day.
Existing Switch owners get a free upgrade to the Switch 2 version, eliminating any additional purchase requirements for players who already own the game. This move signals Nintendo's continued emphasis on backward compatibility and consumer-friendly upgrade paths as it transitions to new hardware.
Tales of the Shire originally launched across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on July 29 last year. The game lets players live out Hobbit life in Middle-earth, customizing their character's appearance, decorating their Hobbit hole with grid-free furniture placement, and engaging in fishing, gardening, and foraging activities.
The March 25 release date strategically matches Tolkien Reading Day, an annual celebration of J.R.R. Tolkien's works observed by fans worldwide.
While Weta Workshop hasn't detailed specific Switch 2 enhancements beyond a new trailer showing smoother performance, improved visuals and stability are expected given the original Switch version's technical shortcomings.
A second title joins the early Switch 2 lineup just one day later. The Midnight Walk arrives March 26 on Nintendo's new console for $29.99, following its earlier releases on PC and PlayStation platforms with VR support. The dark fantasy adventure from Lost in Random developers features handcrafted clay animation in stop-motion style.
Both announcements emerged from this week's Nintendo Indie World showcase, marking some of the first concrete release dates for games specifically targeting the upcoming hardware. The back-to-back March launches suggest Nintendo is preparing a steady stream of software support as it readies its next-generation console for market.
