HBO Max won't load, your show keeps buffering, or an error blocks playback altogether. Start by narrowing the problem to the service, one title, or your device. Then use the matching fix below, from a quick app restart to account recovery.

Check whether HBO Max is down

Start at the HBO Max Help Center and check for service notices.

For another signal, review the status indicator, 24-hour graph, and recent local reports on Down for Everyone or Just Me. These are user reports, not official confirmation of an outage.

Try playing another title. If only one movie or episode fails, report it through the Help Center's Contact us option.

Test HBO Max on another supported device or desktop browser before resetting equipment.

If several titles fail across devices, select Contact us to ask about a service interruption.

If these checks don't identify an interruption or a single broken title, try restarting the app next.

Give a stuck app a fresh start

A stalled app or browser leaves HBO Max unresponsive.

Force-close HBO Max on your device. On a Face ID iPhone, start by swiping up from the bottom and pausing; on a Home-button iPhone, double-click Home.

Swipe the HBO Max app preview upward to close it.

Reopen HBO Max.

On a computer, close the browser instead.

Reopen the browser.

Retry your title.

If playback still fails, sign out through profile > Sign Out on mobile or the website. On a TV, use the Settings cog > Sign Out.

Power off your device for 30 seconds.

Restart the device.

Sign in to HBO Max again.

Install app and device updates

Update HBO Max through your device's official store. On mobile or Apple TV, select Update on the store's HBO Max page when offered.

On Fire TV, highlight HBO Max and use Menu > More Info > Update. On Roku, highlight HBO Max and use Star > Check for Updates.

Check for phone software updates through Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone or iPad. On Android, use Settings > System > Software Update; the path varies by manufacturer.

For Fire TV system updates, use Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update. On Roku, use Settings > System > Software update > Check Now.

Improve the connection when playback buffers

Run an internet speed test on your streaming connection. HBO Max requires at least 5 Mbps for HD. For 4K, it requires at least 25 Mbps and recommends 50 Mbps or more.

Pause other network activity that competes with your stream.

Secure any loose network cables.

Try Ethernet on a device that supports it. On a phone using cellular data, switch to Wi-Fi.

If your home connection still struggles, disconnect the modem and router from power for 30 seconds.

Reconnect the modem first and wait for connectivity.

Reconnect the router afterward.

Retry HBO Max.

If buffering continues, test playback on another supported device. Use the account, app-storage, or browser fix below that matches where the failure occurs.

Restore sign-in and subscription access

An account or subscription problem blocks access even when HBO Max opens normally.

For a forgotten password, open Sign In > Forgot Password?.

Submit your account email using Submit.

Open the newest recovery email.

Select Reset Your Password. Reset links expire after 24 hours or when replaced by a newer request.

Save a new password using Save.

If the email is missing, search your spam, junk, and promotions folders.

Confirm your account email on an already signed-in device under profile > Account.

For a TV sign-in failure, try scanning its QR code.

If that fails, enter the six-digit TV code at HBOMax.com/signin in a private browser window.

If HBO Max asks you to renew or displays a welcome-back message, check your subscription and named billing provider at HBOMax.com/subscription.

Check the subscription's status in that provider's account portal.

For an active Apple-billed subscription that HBO Max doesn't recognize, sign out of HBO Max on the Apple device and account used to purchase it.

Select Sign In.

On Apple TV, select Use Email Address.

Select Restore Purchase.

For a provider reauthentication prompt, select Connect Your Provider.

Authenticate with that provider.

Clear app storage or reinstall HBO Max

This resets local app storage after restarts and updates fail.

On an Android phone or tablet, find HBO Max in device Settings.

Open its Storage & cache menu, labeled Storage on some phones.

Select Clear cache.

On Fire TV, clear the cache through Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > HBO Max > Clear Cache.

Reopen HBO Max after clearing the cache.

Test playback.

If Fire TV still fails, select Clear Data on the same app page. Be ready to sign in again after clearing app data or reinstalling. On a phone or tablet, deleting HBO Max also removes its downloaded titles.

For an iPhone or iPad reinstall, touch and hold HBO Max.

Select Remove App.

Select Delete App. Removing only the Home Screen icon does not uninstall HBO Max.

Confirm with Delete.

Download HBO Max again from the App Store.

For a Fire TV reinstall, remove the app through Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > HBO Max > Uninstall.

Reinstall from your device's official app store using the HBO Max installation instructions. Sideloaded installations are unsupported.

Isolate browser-only playback problems

Test HBO Max in another supported desktop browser or a private session. Use Chrome's New Incognito Window, Edge's New InPrivate Window, Firefox's New private window, or Safari's File > New Private Window. Private mode is a diagnostic test; return to a normal window if it causes playback trouble.

Update your browser before changing its settings. In Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome to let the update run. Select Relaunch when prompted.

Clear HBO Max's stored site data in the affected browser. In Chrome, find and delete its data under Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions. In Safari, remove HBO Max's entries through Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data > Remove.

Temporarily disable an ad blocker or other relevant extension; Chrome's controls are under More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Retry playback. Turn extensions back on individually to identify the one interfering with HBO Max.

Match the fix to your error message

Use the warning on your screen to choose the next fix.

  1. 1.“Are you using a VPN?” Disable your VPN, proxy, or anonymization service. Restart your network equipment if the warning persists. Contact your internet provider if it remains.
  2. 2.“This is Uncharted Territory” Confirm HBO Max is offered at your physical location. Disable IP-masking services and restart the network. For persistent incorrect region detection, contact your internet provider and HBO Max with your ISP name and public IP address.
  3. 3.“Streaming on too many devices” Ask another household member to stop playback, then wait a few minutes. Remote sign-out does not guarantee an immediate stop; active household playback can continue until the current title ends.
  4. 4.“Your device time is out of sync” Correct your device's date, time, and time zone, then sign in again. On Windows, use Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time; enable Set time automatically and, where appropriate, Set time zone automatically.
  5. 5.A household access prompt Choose Home or Traveling as appropriate. Select Send Code and enter the latest emailed code.
  6. 6.“There’s a problem with your device setup” Temporarily exit ad-blocking, IP-masking, and screen-capture software. For an external display, try the computer's primary monitor or connect directly to the TV, bypassing receivers and switches. HBO Max specifies HDCP 2.1 or later, or HDCP 2.2 for 4K.

Get help for a persistent failure

HBO Max support handles failures that remain after these checks.

Record the exact error code, affected title, device and software versions, and troubleshooting you've already tried.

Open the HBO Max Help Center.

Select Contact us.

Send those details, including whether the same failure occurs on another title, device, or browser.
