Your Garmin heart-rate reading is missing, jumping around, or failing to appear in Garmin Connect. The next step depends on where it breaks: the chest monitor, the watch’s wrist sensor, or the upload. Start with the contact checks below, then follow the fixes for your setup.
Start with skin contact and an awake monitor
For HRM 200 or HRM 600, press the button once to wake the monitor before testing. With a buttonless chest strap, wet the electrodes. Wear it directly against your skin beneath your breastbone, with the Garmin logo upright.
Adjust the strap so it stays against your skin without shifting. On HRM 600, fasten both snaps on the removable module completely.
For wrist readings, clean and dry your arm, keeping lotion, sunscreen, and repellent out from underneath the sensor. Wear the watch snugly above your wrist bone.
If readings are still missing, check chest-monitor power next. For the watch’s built-in sensor, jump to the wrist-heart-rate settings below.
Check the battery before changing settings
This addresses a chest monitor that lacks power. Press the HRM 600 button to check its charge: green means sufficient charge, orange means low charge, and red means critically low charge.
Detach the HRM 600 module for charging, then clean its charging contacts. Dry the contacts completely before attaching the Garmin charging cable to the module.
Connect the cable to USB power somewhere between 59°F and 108°F. Leave it charging until the light turns solid green. Flashing green means charging; a full charge can take three hours.
For an HRM 200 battery replacement, detach the module from the strap. Use the strap’s adjustment slider in the battery-cover notches to turn the cover counterclockwise and unlock it. Then remove the cover and remove the battery. Wait 30 seconds.
Insert a new CR2032 into the cover with its positive side facing into the cover. Refit the cover at the unlocked position, then turn it clockwise to lock. Press the module button to wake it.
For another Garmin chest monitor, use its model-specific battery-replacement instructions. Cover designs and battery orientation differ; HRM 600 has a rechargeable battery.
Restore the connection to your watch or bike computer
Bring the awake chest monitor within 10 feet of your compatible Garmin watch or Edge computer. On HRM 200 or HRM 600, hold the monitor’s button for four seconds to enter pairing mode.
Open the receiver’s Sensors & Accessories menu. Depending on the receiver, it is named Sensors or Accessories.
For a pairing that no longer connects, select the existing monitor. Choose Remove, then choose Add New or Add Sensor, using the label on your receiver. Select External Heart Rate if prompted.
Select your monitor from the results. Test the connection during a recorded activity.
If the receiver does not support secure pairing, double-press the HRM 200 or HRM 600 button to switch to open mode. Three green flashes every five seconds identify open mode; two identify secure mode. Repeat the pairing sequence after changing modes.
Tip: disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth receivers when connections are full; HRM-Dual supports two concurrent Bluetooth connections, while HRM 200, HRM 600, HRM-Fit, and HRM-Pro support three.
Steady chest readings that jump or drop out
Use these checks when the monitor connects but its readings jump or disappear. HRM-Fit also needs a secure attachment to the right sports-bra band.
Moisten the electrodes again. On HRM 600, moisten the contact patches as well. Warm up for 5–10 minutes before checking readings from HRM 600, HRM-Fit, or HRM-Pro again.
Retest those monitors away from power lines, motors, microwave ovens, cordless phones, Wi-Fi access points, and nearby 2.4 GHz sensors. For HRM-Fit or HRM-Pro, try a cotton shirt when synthetic clothing rubs against the monitor. Garmin identifies that rubbing as a source of static interference.
For HRM-Fit, choose a medium- or high-support sports bra with a snug, flat band about 3/4–2 inches wide. Garmin excludes zipper-front bras. After wetting the electrodes, close the HRM-Fit center clip around the band. Gently draw the bra band toward the center before attaching a side clip.
Close that clip around the band, away from any underwire. Release the band without leaving puckering. Repeat that sequence for the other side clip. Check in a mirror that the monitor lies flat beneath the band and presses against your skin.
Jump and stretch before your workout to check that the clips remain secure. Remove any detachable module before cleaning the strap. Never force an integrated module off.
Rinse the strap after each use to remove sweat and salt deposits. Wash it after seven uses, or sooner when needed, following its care label. Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and tumble-drying. Dry the module and strap snaps before reconnecting them.
Turn the watch’s wrist sensor back on
A disabled wrist-heart-rate setting or a battery-saving mode that switches off the sensor stops wrist readings. Open the heart-rate glance on your watch. If it shows Disabled, select that message. Use the offered option to enable the sensor.
On fēnix 8, hold the middle-left button to open the menu. On Forerunner 970, hold the menu button instead. Open Watch Settings > Health & Wellness > Wrist Heart Rate > Status. Select Auto.
On Venu 4, press the top button from the watch face. Open Settings > Health & Wellness > Wrist Heart Rate > Status. Select Auto.
On Instinct 3 AMOLED, hold MENU. Open Sensors & Accessories > Wrist Heart Rate > Status. Select Auto.
If the sensor remains off on fēnix 8, hold the middle-left button. Open Watch Settings > Power Manager > Battery Saver. Turn off Status.
On Instinct 3 AMOLED, hold MENU. Open Power Manager > Battery Saver. Turn off Status.
On Venu 4, swipe left from the watch face. Open Settings > Power Manager > Battery Saver. Turn off Status.
If your Forerunner 970 shows dashes while the sensor lights operate, check its fit against your skin. Warm up for 5–10 minutes, indoors when it is cold. Wait for a reading and a steady heart icon before starting the activity.
Select the activity profile that most closely matches your workout. Garmin uses different heart-rate calculations for different activities.
Get Garmin Connect to find the monitor
This addresses phone-pairing failures on HRMs that support Garmin Connect. Check your model: HRM 200, HRM 600, HRM-Fit, HRM-Pro, and HRM-Pro Plus support direct pairing; HRM-Dual does not. Unpair the monitor from unused smartphones or tablets. Only one mobile device can be paired to the HRM at a time.
Close Garmin Connect, then reopen it. Update Garmin Connect through your phone’s app store. Turn your phone’s Bluetooth off, then turn Bluetooth back on.
On Android 12 or newer, open Garmin Connect’s More > Settings > Phone Permissions > Manage Permissions > Permissions > Nearby devices. Select Allow.
On iPhone, tap the Bluetooth Permission Required banner when it appears in Garmin Connect. Enable Bluetooth in the iPhone setting that opens.
Wear HRM-Fit, HRM-Pro, or HRM-Pro Plus to wake it. For HRM 200 or HRM 600, hold the button for four seconds instead. Open Garmin Connect’s More > Garmin Devices > Add Device. Complete the pairing prompts.
If an existing connection still fails, remove it through More > Garmin Devices > your monitor > the three-dot menu > Remove Device. On iPhone, remove any remaining phone pairing through Settings > Bluetooth > the monitor’s information icon > Forget This Device.
On Android, remove the phone pairing through Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > the device’s gear icon > Unpair. Labels vary by manufacturer. Return to Garmin Connect’s More > Garmin Devices > Add Device. Complete pairing again with the monitor awake.
Try software fixes before a factory reset
For an update-capable HRM paired directly with Garmin Connect, wake the monitor. Open More > Garmin Devices > your HRM > General. Select Update Available when it appears.
Choose Update HRM. Keep the app open and the monitor nearby until the update finishes.
For an unresponsive fēnix 8, hold its power button until the watch switches off. Hold the power button again to restart it. Other watch models have their own restart procedures. Sync fēnix 8 with Garmin Connect to transfer available watch software.
If the earlier checks have failed, reset HRM 200 or HRM 600 through Garmin Connect’s Garmin Devices > HRM 200 or HRM 600 > System > Factory Reset. This clears the monitor’s data and pairings. Pair the monitor again after the reset finishes.
If these fixes fail, contact Garmin Support with your exact product. An HRM 600 slow-flashing error state requires support; for HRM 200 slow red flashes, first remove the battery for 30 seconds and reinstall it using the battery procedure above, then contact support if the error continues.
Find readings missing from Garmin Connect history
When readings work but uploaded history is missing, enable Garmin Connect’s More > Settings > Profile & Privacy > Data > Device Upload switch. This setting controls upload permission.
Sign into Garmin Connect in a browser to check that you are using the intended account. Remove the watch from any unintended account’s app configuration. Pair it to the intended account.
Check whether the missing history appears on the wrong date. Set automatic time using your watch’s model-specific settings. Sync through Garmin Connect, Garmin Express, or GPS, as supported.
For standalone HRM 600 recording, wear and wake the monitor with its charge above 5%; recording cannot start below that level and stops if charge falls below it. Open Garmin Connect’s More > Garmin Devices > HRM 600 > Activity Recording to follow the start prompts. Finish with Stop > Save.
Recover heart-rate data after an out-of-range workout
Use this sequence with a compatible watch and a monitor that stores readings while out of range.
- 1.Keep the watch’s activity timer running throughout the workout. Supported monitors include HRM 600, HRM-Fit, HRM-Pro, HRM-Pro Plus, HRM-Swim, and HRM-Tri.
- 2.Before saving, wear the monitor and bring it within one meter of the watch, with both out of the water. HRM-Fit is not designed for swimming.
- 3.Allow the stored heart-rate data to download before saving the activity. HRM 600 does not transmit live chest-strap readings while submerged.
- 4.For an HRM 600 activity already saved without readings, wear the monitor and open the compatible watch’s History > saved timed activity > Download HR. This creates a new activity file containing the heart-rate data. If that file does not upload automatically, import it manually into Garmin Connect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HRM 200 light turning off mean it stopped transmitting heart rate?
No. Its LED normally times out after two minutes. The light going out alone does not mean transmission stopped. Its indicator setting is in Garmin Connect under Garmin Devices > HRM 200 > LED Indications > Battery Saver.
Why are my watch’s wrist-sensor lights still on when a chest strap is connected?
Compatible Garmin watches use dynamic heart-rate source switching, which allows the wrist LEDs to remain on with a strap connected. On fēnix 8, open Watch Settings > Health & Wellness > Wrist Heart Rate > Source Switching. With a compatible strap paired, disable it outside an activity profile to evaluate source selection.
Which screwdriver does an HRM-Dual battery cover need?
HRM-Dual uses Torx T5 screws. Units manufactured before September 2020 use Phillips #00. Preserve the O-ring and avoid overtightening when reassembling.
Can I connect HRM 600 to non-Garmin fitness equipment?
Yes, with compatible equipment. Move at least 33 feet from other heart-rate monitors. Press the HRM 600 button to wake it. Double-press to select open mode, identified by three green flashes every five seconds. Hold the button for four seconds to enter pairing mode. Select HRM 600 in the receiving device’s Bluetooth settings. Pairing mode lasts five minutes.
