Seeing “Dell SupportAssist has detected a failing component” is unsettling, especially when your PC won't start. The warning alone doesn't identify the repair, but its component name and diagnostic code give you a place to start. Here's how to protect your files, check the hardware, and get the right repair underway.
Find out exactly what failed
Start with the details on the warning screen to find instructions for your specific failure.
- 1.Record the component name, error code, validation code, and your PC’s Service Tag.
- 2.Open Dell’s preboot error lookup on your PC or another computer. If the warning includes a QR code, scan it with your phone to open the relevant Dell support page instead.
- 3.For the manual lookup, fill in Error Code (without 2000-prefix), Validation Code, and Service Tag.
- 4.Select Submit.
- 5.Follow the error-specific troubleshooting or service instructions on the resulting Dell page.
Protect your files before repair
A backup protects accessible files before repair or replacement; it doesn't repair failing storage.
Back up your files before hardware repairs, especially when the warning names your drive. The recovery backup option below requires readable storage and a PC that supports SupportAssist OS Recovery.
If Windows won't start, restart your PC. Tap F12 at startup, then select SupportAssist OS Recovery. Select APPROVE if prompted.
Choose Back up Files/ Disk Cloning, then select Start.
Select Back Up Files, then select Next and Start Backup. Choose the folders you want to preserve when prompted.
Select an external drive with enough space for the backup. Enter your BitLocker recovery key if requested, then select NEXT to continue. Select DONE when the backup finishes.
Run a test outside Windows
Windows won't load? Dell’s built-in diagnostics work independently of Windows and the SupportAssist app.
Restart or power on the PC. Tap F12 repeatedly at the Dell logo, then select Diagnostics in the One Time Boot Menu.
Complete any interactive test prompts. Record any failures shown in the results.
After reviewing the results, select EXIT to leave diagnostics. If you need a deeper check instead, use the advanced controls below on interfaces that offer them.
Press Esc if necessary to reach the test controls, then select ADVANCED TEST. Clear Select all and select the suspect component.
Enable Thorough mode, then select RUN TEST. Available tests depend on the installed hardware.
If testing leaves the warning unresolved, try the code-specific troubleshooting under “Match the repair to the diagnostic code” below. A passing repeat scan doesn't prove the original warning was false.
If Windows starts, review SupportAssist’s results
Sign in to Windows as an administrator. Open SupportAssist’s Home > Scan hardware > Start to run a hardware scan.
Inspect Report summary when it finishes. Follow any request to restart for deeper preboot testing or create a support request.
For a targeted check, open Support > Test my hardware > Get started. Select the suspect hardware. Follow its component-specific prompts.
To compare earlier results, open History. Use the date selector and filters to find the related hardware scan. If your app has different menus, use the F12 diagnostics above.
Clear blocked airflow for fan or thermal warnings
Dust buildup and blocked vents restrict the airflow your PC needs for cooling.
Shut down your PC and unplug all peripherals before cleaning. Inspect your model’s air vents for dust and obstructions.
Remove dust with canned compressed air, holding the can upright to avoid moisture buildup. Dell advises against vacuum cleaners and blowers. Place the computer on a firm surface with its vents unobstructed, then repeat the hardware diagnostics using F12 > Diagnostics.
If the fan still fails its test, arrange service. Cleaning doesn't restore a mechanically failed fan.
Match the repair to the diagnostic code
Open Dell’s diagnostic error-code table. Use Ctrl+F to find your complete code. Follow its Next Steps, using the linked 2000-8NNN table when your code belongs to that group. For other code series, enter the code in Dell’s preboot error lookup.
For drive error 2000-0142, Dell’s troubleshooting covers BIOS and drive-firmware updates, followed by powering off and reconnecting the drive according to the model’s service manual. The connection check applies only to serviceable drives, so use your model’s instructions. Repeat diagnostics after the prescribed steps; a persistent failure needs Dell service.
For memory errors such as 2000-0122, shut down before reseating removable RAM according to your model’s service manual. With multiple removable modules, test them individually, repeating diagnostics after each change. This procedure doesn't apply to soldered memory.
When the repair instructions call for updates, open SupportAssist’s Home > Update software > Start. Review Report summary, then select View updates to install the required packages for your model and operating system. Keep power stable during BIOS updates; updates don't repair physically failed components.
When the warning persists, get the right help
A component that keeps failing after code-specific troubleshooting needs Dell’s repair or replacement workflow. Conflicting scan results also need follow-up.
In SupportAssist, open Support, then select Get started under Start a Service Request. Confirm your Dell MyAccount contact information and choose a Category.
Describe the failure, including the component name, diagnostic code, validation code, and Service Tag. Select Send. Available assistance depends on your service entitlement.
If Windows won't start, open Dell’s preboot error lookup from another device, or scan the warning’s QR code with your phone. Follow the error-specific service options on that page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling SupportAssist stop the failing component warning?
Uninstalling the Windows app leaves BIOS-embedded diagnostics in place and does not repair hardware. Preboot warnings are separate from the app.
What if SupportAssist will not open or complete a scan?
Restart Windows. Wait five minutes for SupportAssist’s services to load. Reopen the app. If it still malfunctions, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Locate Dell SupportAssist. Select Uninstall and complete the prompts. Restart Windows. Download and reinstall SupportAssist from Dell’s official SupportAssist for Home PCs page.
Can I turn off the notifications instead?
Notification controls silence alerts without changing the hardware’s condition. Disabling SupportAssist’s master notification option suppresses both hardware and urgent driver notifications. It does not control preboot warnings.
Do Dell’s website diagnostics work without SupportAssist installed?
Dell’s browser-launched hardware tests use installed SupportAssist and prompt you to install it when required. They are not standalone browser tests.
