AI Mode buttons show up in Chrome’s address bar and on Google Search, and removing one doesn’t remove the other. Start with Chrome’s button control, then choose the settings that match where you’re seeing unwanted AI features. Google doesn’t document a single consumer switch that turns off AI Mode across Chrome, Google Search, and the Google app.
Hide AI Mode in Chrome’s address bar
On desktop Chrome, use this control to hide the persistent AI Mode and Add tabs and more buttons without disabling AI Mode on Google Search.
- 1.Right-click the address bar.
- 2.Uncheck Always show AI Mode.
- 3.For your next ordinary search, type your query in the address bar and press Enter.
Change where Chrome sends your searches
Having Google set as your default search provider enables Chrome’s Google AI Mode integrations.
On Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook, open More > Settings > Search engine.
Under Search engine, select Change.
Choose another provider. Address-bar searches will go there instead. Switching providers doesn’t guarantee AI-free results, since other search engines offer their own AI features.
On Android, open Chrome’s More > Settings, then under Basics, tap Search engine.
Choose another provider.
Tap Back. This changes searches entered in Chrome, not searches through the Google app or Pixel Launcher.
On iPhone or iPad, open Chrome’s More > Settings > Search engine.
Select another provider. Visiting Google directly still displays Google’s search interface, regardless of Chrome’s default provider.
Keep Google and filter for text-based links
Use the Web filter when you want Google’s text-based links without features such as AI Overviews. It changes the results you’re viewing, not Chrome’s search provider.
Run your search on Google.
On desktop, if Web isn’t in the visible results filters, click More. On mobile, look for Web among the result types below the search box.
Select Web. This filters that search’s results; it does not permanently remove the AI Mode button or set a permanent Web-only default.
Avoid opening an AI conversation by accident
For an ordinary desktop Chrome search, type your query in the address bar and press Enter. Pressing Tab followed by Enter when the AI Mode entry point is focused opens AI Mode instead.
On mobile Google Search, select Close to leave an AI conversation opened from an AI Overview and return to the results page.
Leave Ask anything empty when you want to stay out of AI Mode. Entering a follow-up there takes you into an AI conversation.
Turn off extra experiments in Search Labs
Search Labs enrollment adds experimental AI features alongside Google’s standard search experience.
For the desktop AI Mode experiment, open a new tab while signed in to your personal Google Account.
Open Search Labs > Manage.
Turn off AI Mode. If no Labs icon appears beside AI Mode, that experiment is not enabled.
On iPhone or iPad, open the Labs control at the top of the page.
Open Manage.
Turn off AI Mode.
To leave the broader desktop experiment, open a new tab while signed in and outside Incognito.
Open Labs > Manage.
Turn off AI in Search. This opts you out of new AI experiments and their announcement emails. Standard AI Overviews remain available.
These controls end experimental participation; they don’t switch off AI Mode everywhere. Search Labs is not available to Google Workspace accounts.
Hide Google Search’s AI elements with an extension
In desktop Chrome, open the publisher’s Chrome Web Store listing for Hide Google AI Overviews and Mode.
Select Add to Chrome.
Review the installation confirmation before approving the extension.
Run a Google search. The publisher says the extension automatically hides AI Overviews, AI Mode buttons, and AI suggestions within Google Search pages. This third-party extension hides webpage elements; it cannot remove Chrome’s native address-bar controls. This installation method is for desktop Chrome, not Chrome on Android or iPhone.
If Google changes its page structure, check the publisher’s listing for extension updates.
Unpin the separate Ask Gemini button
Ask Gemini belongs to Gemini in Chrome, which is separate from Google Search’s AI Mode. Hiding one does not turn off the other.
Right-click the top of Chrome and select Unpin Gemini to hide the browser button.
If the button remains, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Preferences and turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser.
