You open YouTube on Roku, choose a video, and the screen goes black instead of playing. The fix depends on whether YouTube alone is failing, the Roku connection is unstable, or the TV is losing the HDMI picture. Start with the quick checks below, then move to app, account, and display fixes only when the earlier step does not clear it.

Confirm the problem is only YouTube

Open YouTube and play a different video.

Press Home and open another streaming app on the Roku.

If several YouTube videos fail and other apps play normally, check YouTube’s provider status page before changing Roku settings.

If several apps fail, run the Roku connection and restart steps before reinstalling YouTube.

When only one YouTube video shows a black screen, try another title first.

Keep the test simple: one YouTube video, one other YouTube video, then one non-YouTube app.

Restart Roku before changing anything

This fixes a stuck app session, a frozen playback screen, or a launch that lands on black.

Press Home on the Roku remote.

Open Settings.

Choose System.

Select Power if that menu appears.

Choose System restart.

If Power is not shown, choose System restart from System.

Open YouTube again after Roku restarts.

Check the Roku internet connection

A weak or failed connection can leave YouTube stuck on a black screen while video loads. Press Home, then open Settings, Network, and Check connection.

Next, go to Settings, Network, and About to check Signal strength. If the signal reads Poor or Fair, move the Roku and router closer together, reduce interference, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi on supported devices, or use Ethernet on Roku models that support it.

For a connection that keeps failing after the basic test, open Settings, Advanced system settings, Network connection reset, and Reset connection. Reconnect the Roku to Wi-Fi, then try YouTube again.

Update Roku and the YouTube app

Outdated Roku software or an outdated YouTube app is a common cause of app playback trouble.

Press Home, then open Settings, System, Software update, and Check Now. Roku checks system software and installed app updates from the same screen.

To update only YouTube, press Home, highlight YouTube, press Star, choose Check for Updates, and open YouTube after the update finishes.

Remove and reinstall YouTube cleanly

Use a reinstall when YouTube launches but keeps showing a black screen after restart and update steps.

Press Home, highlight YouTube, press Star, choose Remove app, and confirm. Then reinstall it from Store, Apps, or Search by finding YouTube and choosing Add app.

If Remove app is missing, an active subscription or current billing cycle can block removal until auto-renew is turned off. Current Roku menus use Remove app.

If YouTube does not appear after reinstalling, go to Settings, System, System update, and Check now.

If reinstalling does not stop the black screen, reset YouTube from inside the app or sign back into the Google account.

Reset YouTube or sign back in

This method applies when the YouTube app opens far enough to reach its own settings. It also applies when the black screen follows one Google account but not another.

Open YouTube, open the left navigation menu, choose Settings, select Reset app, and confirm. This signs you out and clears YouTube app data stored locally on the device.

To change accounts, open the left navigation panel, select the profile picture at the top, open the Account tab, and choose Guest, switch accounts, add an account, or remove the current account.

To sign back in, open YouTube and choose Sign in with your phone by scanning the QR code or going to yt.be/activate and entering the TV code. You can also choose Sign in with your remote and enter your Google account credentials with the on-screen keyboard.

Fix an HDMI or display black screen

The wrong TV input is the most common cause when the whole Roku picture goes black. An HDMI, HDCP, or display-mode mismatch also causes a black picture, a screen that flashes black as playback starts, or protected 4K and HDR video that fails.

Make sure the TV is on, press a Roku remote button, and confirm the TV is set to the Roku HDMI input with the TV remote’s Input, Source, or Video button. Pause about 10 seconds on each input while switching.

Connect the Roku player directly to the TV, bypassing an AVR, soundbar, or HDMI switch. Reseat the HDMI cable or Streaming Stick, try another HDMI port, and try another HDMI cable.

For HDCP-style failures, unplug both ends of the HDMI cable, power off the TV, AVR, or soundbar, unplug the Roku power, reconnect HDMI securely, and reconnect power to everything. For 4K HDR setups, use a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable or Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable.

To change the Roku display type, press Home, open Settings, choose Display type, select an available display type, choose OK, and select Yes, I can see it when an image appears.

Stop black flashes when playback starts

Refresh-rate switching is the most common cause when the picture goes black only as playback starts or stops.

Press Home on the Roku remote.

Open Settings.

Choose System.

Open Advanced system settings.

Select Advanced display settings.

Choose Auto-adjust display refresh rate.

Set it to Disabled.

This setting applies only on compatible Roku players where Auto-adjust display refresh rate appears.

Use casting or mirroring as a workaround

Casting helps when YouTube is installed on Roku but the normal app controls or launch path keep failing.

Install YouTube on Roku and on your phone or tablet, connect both devices to the same wireless network, open the YouTube mobile app, tap Cast, and select the Roku device. YouTube launches automatically on Roku and playback begins.

You can also link with a TV code. In the Roku YouTube app, open Settings and Link with TV code; in the phone or tablet YouTube app, tap Cast, choose Link with TV code, enter the blue TV code, and tap LINK.

On iPhone, iPad, or Mac, use AirPlay with a compatible Roku by keeping both devices on the same wireless network, tapping or clicking the AirPlay video icon, and selecting the Roku device. Make sure Roku has AirPlay set to On under Settings and Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.

If casting works but the Roku YouTube app still goes black on its own, go back to the reinstall step; if the entire Roku interface is unstable or dark, use a factory reset only as a last resort from Home, Settings, System, Advanced system settings, and Factory reset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is YouTube black on Roku but other apps work?

That points to the YouTube app, the signed-in YouTube account, or a YouTube service interruption. Restart Roku, update YouTube, reset the YouTube app, then reinstall it.

Does removing YouTube delete my Google account?

No. Removing the Roku app removes it from your Roku account, so it comes off every Roku device linked to that account. Resetting the YouTube app signs you out and clears local app data, so you need to sign in again.

Why can’t I remove YouTube from Roku?

If Remove app is missing, Roku says an active subscription or current billing cycle can block removal until auto-renew is turned off.

Should I factory reset Roku for a YouTube black screen?

Use factory reset only after restart, network checks, updates, reinstalling YouTube, YouTube account reset, and HDMI or display fixes fail. It erases preferences, unlinks the Roku account, removes apps and account info, and requires Guided Setup again.
