Your Vizio TV has a picture, but the sound isn't cooperating. Maybe the volume buttons do nothing, the soundbar stays silent, or dialogue gets lost. Start with the quick checks below, then follow the fixes for your setup before reaching for a factory reset.

Start with mute and volume

Press MUTE on the remote to clear mute.

Press Volume Up to raise the TV’s volume.

Still silent? Check the speaker settings next. If the remote itself does not respond, jump to the remote troubleshooting below.

When the TV speakers stay silent

After using external audio equipment, check whether the built-in speakers are enabled. In the TV’s audio settings, set TV Speakers to On. The setting’s location varies by model.

On Bluetooth-capable models with the VIZIO OS headphone menu, open MENU > PAIR HEADPHONES.

Choose TV Speakers on the Bluetooth Headphones screen to return audio from headphones to the TV.

Get an unresponsive remote working

Install fresh remote batteries with their positive and negative ends aligned correctly.

Remove obstructions between the remote and the TV’s sensor.

Aim the remote directly at the TV.

Press one button at a time.

For a Quantum Pro with a VIZIO Voice Remote, hold MIC and MUTE together near the TV to start pairing. This procedure is specific to that voice remote.

To use phone control on a compatible TV, connect your phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.

Open VIZIO Mobile on your Android phone or iPhone.

Select your TV in the app’s device selector.

Enter the four-digit pairing code displayed on the TV.

Use the app’s volume controls to adjust the sound.

Tip: If phone controls work but the remote buttons do not, focus on the remote before resetting the TV.

A soundbar needs the right connection and control settings

The wrong HDMI connection or disabled CEC prevents volume control through the TV remote on compatible HDMI soundbar setups.

Connect the soundbar to the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.

Enable CEC in the TV settings. Its menu location varies by TV.

Try adjusting the soundbar’s volume with the TV remote.

For a VIZIO SV210Y-0808, briefly press Volume (+) on the soundbar to wake it.

Use the soundbar’s volume buttons to adjust its loudness. This helps separate a remote-control problem from a soundbar audio problem.

If that soundbar is using Bluetooth instead of TV audio, open its screen in VIZIO Mobile.

Select EQ Modes > TV (HDMI).

On a Quantum Pro connected to compatible ARC audio equipment, set eARC to Off if external audio remains missing. This switches to ARC mode, which reduces the available audio formats on some setups.

If sound fails on a connected device or antenna channel

Use these checks when missing audio comes from a console, Blu-ray player, cable box, or another external source. For an antenna channel, skip to the reception checks at the end of this section.

Check the audio connections between the TV and the connected device.

For silent Netflix playback through external equipment, reseat the HDMI or optical connections.

Try another cable if the connection still produces no sound.

Connect an external streaming player directly to the TV to bypass the receiver.

Test another HDMI port for that streaming player.

If a computer supplies the TV picture while playing Netflix, raise the Netflix player’s volume.

Unmute the browser tab or site.

Raise the computer’s volume before making further TV adjustments.

For missing audio on an over-the-air channel, secure the antenna connection.

Reposition the antenna, including nearer a window, to improve the affected channel’s signal.

Make quiet dialogue easier to hear

These settings address hard-to-hear speech, flat sound, and uneven volume.

On VIZIO 4K TVs with ClearDialog, open Settings > ALL SETTINGS > AUDIO > ClearDialog.

Select a ClearDialog level.

If sound is flat or dialogue disappears on a TV with Volume Leveling, set it to Off in the audio settings.

For an SV210Y-0808 soundbar, select the soundbar in VIZIO Mobile.

Adjust ClearDialog for dialogue.

For volume consistency, adjust TruVolume in the advanced audio settings.

Troubleshoot Netflix audio separately

For quiet Netflix playback, open Audio & Subtitles during playback.

Choose a stereo or non-5.1 audio track if the title offers one.

Replay the scene to test the change.

If Netflix on the smart TV has no sound, unplug the TV.

Leave it unplugged for three minutes.

Reconnect the TV’s power.

Switch the TV on.

Retry Netflix.

Tip: Use the stereo-track change for quiet surround audio and Netflix’s power-cycle procedure for silent playback.

Restart the TV and check for updates

Try a menu restart after the control, output, and connection checks for your setup. The paths below apply to supported interfaces on affected 2016–2020 VIZIO TVs; other models use different menus.

Open Menu > All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Restart TV. Some supported interfaces show Soft Power Cycle instead.

Select Yes.

Test the volume again after the TV restarts.

To check for software updates on that interface, open Menu > All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Check for Updates.

Select Yes.

Let any offered update finish. VIZIO does not promise an audio fix with an update.

Save a factory reset for last

A factory reset clears saved TV settings and restores the defaults.

On the VIZIO OS interface with these labels, open Menu > Admin & Privacy > Reset to Factory Defaults.

Select Reset TV.

Complete the TV setup again.

For a Quantum Pro, use this physical reset as an alternative to the menu procedure: with the TV on, hold the Power/Input button beneath the sensor for 12 seconds. This shortcut applies to the Quantum Pro models covered by that procedure.

Repeat setup after the physical reset.

If controls respond but no source produces audio, contact VIZIO through the support offering in VIZIO Mobile for text, chat, or phone assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Vizio TV’s volume with a voice command?

On a Quantum Pro with a paired VIZIO Voice Remote, hold MIC and say “Lower volume to 10.” A compatible TV already linked to Alexa also supports “Alexa, turn up the volume on my Living Room TV.” Substitute your configured TV name.

Can I listen through Bluetooth headphones instead?

On Bluetooth-headphone-capable VIZIO TVs with Quick Settings, open Settings > PAIR HEADPHONES. Put your headphones into pairing mode. Select them under Other Devices. Press OK.

Does resetting a Vizio soundbar always erase Bluetooth pairings?

On the SV210Y-0808, Reset Settings in VIZIO Mobile’s advanced audio settings restores audio defaults while retaining Bluetooth pairings. Factory Reset also removes pairings. These options are model-specific.

How can I test whether my soundbar’s speakers work?

On the VIZIO SV510MW-0906, hold Bluetooth and Volume Up together for five seconds, then release to run the speaker test. Alternatively, select Speaker Test in VIZIO Mobile. Test tones help separate speaker problems from missing TV input audio. This button combination applies specifically to the SV510MW-0906.
