You click Steam, but no window appears, the app freezes, or macOS blocks it with a warning. Start with a full quit, then work through the fix that matches what you see. Reinstalling Steam over its existing installation preserves downloaded games, so leave the support-file reset until the simpler repairs are exhausted.

Give Steam a fresh start

Start here for an unresponsive Steam session or a missing window.

Make Steam the active app. Press Command-Q. Closing its window alone does not quit the app. Reopen Steam.

If it remains unresponsive, press Option-Command-Esc. Select Steam in the force-quit window, then click Force Quit. Open Steam again.

If that fails, choose Apple menu > Restart. Open Steam after your Mac restarts.

When Steam is stuck in the background

Steam can leave an invisible background process running while the app itself is absent from the force-quit window, which lists apps. Activity Monitor quits a process even when it is in a loop or not responding.

Open Activity Monitor. Under Process Name, select the unresponsive Steam process. Click the Stop button, then choose Quit.

If the process will not quit normally, use Force Quit instead. Launch Steam after the process closes.

Check your macOS version

Steam requires macOS Monterey 12 or newer; Valve ended Big Sur 11 support on October 15, 2025.

  1. 1.Choose Apple menu > About This Mac and check your macOS version. Big Sur 11 or earlier needs an upgrade before you troubleshoot the current Steam client.
  2. 2.Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. On an older interface, use Spotlight to find Software Update.
  3. 3.Install the compatible update or upgrade offered and complete any required restart. Software Update offers only releases compatible with your Mac.
  4. 4.Try Steam again once your Mac is running a supported macOS version.

If macOS blocks Steam from opening

For an App Store-only restriction, open System Settings > Privacy & Security. Under Security > Allow apps downloaded from, select App Store and identified developers.

For a Gatekeeper warning about a trusted, untampered Steam download, first attempt to open Steam. Do not treat an explicit malware or damaged-app alert as an ordinary unidentified-developer warning.

After that opening attempt, return to System Settings > Privacy & Security. Scroll down and click Open Anyway if macOS offers the exception. Confirm with Open.

On a work or school Mac, ask your administrator to review the restriction if these security controls are unavailable. There is no universal consumer-side override.

A Rosetta prompt on an Apple silicon Mac

Rosetta runs Intel-based apps and components on Apple silicon Macs. Install it when macOS requests it for Steam; it is not a requirement for every current Steam build.

When the Rosetta prompt appears, connect your Mac to the internet. Click Install, then enter your Mac username and password when prompted.

To inspect an older build, select Steam in Finder. Press Command-I to open Get Info. Read Kind. It identifies the app as Application (Intel), Application (Universal), or Application (Apple silicon).

If Steam still will not open, replace the old installation with Valve’s current installer using the repair below.

Repair Steam without removing your games

Valve’s reinstall procedure repairs client files while preserving installed games.

  1. 1.Quit Steam completely, using the force-quit steps above if necessary.
  2. 2.Open Valve’s Steam download page and select the Mac download under Install Steam or Also available on:.
  3. 3.Use the downloaded installer to reinstall Steam to its existing location.
  4. 4.Open Steam to test the repaired installation.

Check the connection if startup stalls at login

These checks address Steam stalling or failing during updating or signing in.

Restart your modem and router using their manufacturer’s procedure. Reconnect your Mac to the network, then retry Steam’s update or login.

If the problem continues, connect your Mac to another network, preferably one using a different internet provider. Test Steam again on that connection.

For suspected third-party firewall blocking, review the rules with the firewall vendor or your administrator. Add a Steam exception if blocking is confirmed.

If local connection checks do not resolve a login-stage failure, wait a few hours before retrying. Valve lists maintenance, local network problems, and internet-provider problems among the causes of connection failures.

Look for a device or background-software conflict

Use this check when you have controllers, other external input devices, or third-party utilities connected or running. Valve identifies antivirus, filtering, proxy, recording, cleaning, and performance software as potential sources of interference.

Unplug nonessential external input devices. Retry Steam to test for a device or driver conflict. Test suspected background utilities individually using each vendor’s controls. Restore protections after each test.

For a broader startup-software check on an Apple silicon Mac, choose Apple menu > Shut Down. Hold the power button until Loading startup options appears. Select the startup volume. Hold Shift while clicking Continue in Safe Mode.

On an Intel Mac, restart and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears. Log in to the Intel Mac.

Test whether the Steam startup problem persists in safe mode. Use this as a diagnostic check: safe mode limits features, including some needed by games. Restart normally after testing.

Reset Steam’s support files as a last resort

Back up your game saves and other important Steam data before deleting anything. Keeping downloaded games does not guarantee that every game’s saves will survive.

Quit Steam completely. Drag Steam from Applications to Trash. In Finder, hold Option while choosing Go > Library. Open Application Support > Steam.

Move everything inside that folder to Trash except the existing game-library folder, which Valve calls SteamApps. Preserve that existing folder rather than creating a new one. Confirm that your backups are complete and the existing game-library folder remains in place. Choose Finder > Empty Trash.

Reinstall Steam using the current Mac installer from Valve. Try opening Steam again. If the problem persists, report the error through Steam Support’s browser-based client-sign-in help page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I delete the entire Steam folder from Application Support?

Deleting the entire folder removes local Steam content, including the downloaded games retained by the SteamApps folder. Valve treats this as a complete uninstall. Back up your saves and other important data first, and have your Steam credentials available before reinstalling.

Does the built-in macOS firewall fix Steam launch crashes?

The macOS firewall controls incoming connections. Its app permissions are not a general repair for Steam crashing before it reaches networking.

Should I hold the power button if Steam freezes?

Use force quit and a normal restart first. If the entire Mac is unresponsive and cannot restart normally, hold the power button for up to 10 seconds until it turns off. On a Mac laptop with Touch ID, hold Touch ID. Press and release the button to turn the Mac back on. Unsaved work can be lost.

What do I need to submit a Steam Support request?

On Steam Support’s browser-based client-sign-in help page, provide the error details and requested screenshot, enter your email address, and submit the request. Complete email-code verification when prompted. Valve does not receive the request until that verification is complete.
