When your Roku remote volume buttons stop working, the cause is usually the remote type, weak power, pairing, TV control setup, or HDMI-CEC. Most fixes happen inside the Roku menus, and you do not need to replace the whole Roku device first.

Start with the remote itself, then move into TV control setup and CEC. By the end, you will know whether the issue is the remote, the TV code, the Roku setup, or an external soundbar connection.

Check whether your remote controls TV volume

A Roku player simple remote has no TV volume controls. If your remote does not have volume buttons, it cannot be set up to control TV volume.

A Roku TV simple remote includes TV power, volume, and mute. Roku Voice Remote and Roku Voice Remote Pro can control TV power and volume after setup.

Before buying a replacement, use Roku’s accessories compatibility checker. Depending on your Roku device, choose a compatible Roku Voice Remote, Roku Voice Remote Pro, Roku TV Remote, or Roku Players Remote.

Refresh the remote power and batteries

Use this when the volume buttons used to work, the remote misses presses, or other buttons are acting up too. A simple IR remote also needs a clear path to the front of the Roku device.

Point a simple remote directly at the front of the Roku device. Clear anything blocking the sensor, and do not test with the Roku player hidden behind the TV or inside a cabinet.

Remove the old batteries from a simple remote. Press any two buttons, insert a fresh matching pair of batteries, replace the cover, and try the volume buttons from a few angles.

For a battery-powered Roku voice remote, remove both batteries. Press any two buttons, then reinsert the batteries negative end first.

For a rechargeable Roku voice remote, hold Pairing for 20 seconds. If there is no pairing button, hold Back and Home for 20 seconds, then wait for the remote light to stop flashing.

To check battery level on a paired voice remote, open Settings > Remotes & Devices > Remotes > Your Remote > About. Replace the batteries or fully recharge the remote when the level is low.

Pair the voice remote again

This fixes a Roku voice remote that still responds sometimes but no longer sends TV control commands reliably.

Restart the Roku TV or Roku player.

If your remote has a pairing button, hold Pairing for 5 seconds until the light flashes.

If there is no pairing button, hold Back and Home for 5 seconds until the light flashes.

Wait for the pairing message on the TV screen.

If you can navigate with another remote or the Roku mobile app, open Home > Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue.

Follow the on-screen instructions to finish pairing.

Run TV control setup again

Press Home on the Roku remote.

Open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes.

Choose your voice remote.

Select Set up remote for TV control.

Turn the TV volume up, point the Roku voice remote directly at the TV, and follow the on-screen steps.

Test power and volume before moving on because some TV models support one command but not the other.

Try a different TV control code

Use this when the Roku remote turns the TV on or off but the volume buttons do nothing, or when volume works but power does not. The remote can land on a TV code that only handles part of the control set.

Repeat Set up remote for TV control from Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > Your remote.

During the sound test, wait for the music to stop.

Turn the TV volume back up until you hear the music again.

Choose No so Roku skips that code.

Let Roku try the next code.

When the music stops again and the volume buttons work correctly, choose Yes.

Turn on HDMI-CEC for volume control

Turn on CEC in your TV’s own settings.

On Roku, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remote > Add a new remote and add the remote again.

On a Roku TV system, open Home > Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC).

Highlight System audio control and check the box.

Highlight 1-touch play and check the box.

On LG TVs, turn on SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC). On Samsung TVs, turn on Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). On Sony TVs, turn on BRAVIA Sync control. On Vizio TVs, turn on CEC Function.

Keep this in mind: some TVs support CEC for power but not volume.

Update and restart your Roku

This fixes Roku volume control problems tied to software issues or an outdated remote setup.

Press Home.

Open Settings > System > Software update.

Select Check Now.

After the update or restart finishes, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > Your remote > Set up remote for TV control.

If you only need a restart, unplug the Roku device power cord for at least 10 seconds.

Plug the power cord back in.

You can also restart from Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. If there is no Power submenu, choose System restart directly from System.

Use the Roku app for volume

Use this as a temporary workaround when the physical volume buttons are still dead but the Roku device is online. The official Roku mobile app can act as a remote when your phone and Roku are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Install the Roku app from the App Store or Google Play store, then sign in to the Roku mobile app — Roku requires that sign-in before the app can connect to your Roku device. Launch the app, wait for it to discover your Roku device, then tap the Roku device to connect.

Open Remote in the app.

Tap Volume Up, Volume Down, or Mute.

If app-based TV power or volume does not work on a Roku streaming player, enable HDMI-CEC and check Settings > System > Control other devices for 1-Touch Play, TV power, and TV volume.

Roku can expose third-party app access through Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Control by mobile apps, but Roku strongly advises against third-party remote apps for security reasons.

Fix soundbar or receiver volume

Make sure the soundbar or receiver is powered on.

Confirm that a Roku TV Ready soundbar is properly set up and connected to the HDMI ARC port on the Roku TV.

Clear anything blocking the TV’s IR receiver.

Check for soundbar software updates through the manufacturer’s support method.

On a Roku TV with an AVR, soundbar, or home theater connected over HDMI ARC or eARC, open Home > Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC).

Highlight ARC or eARC and check the box.

Enable System audio control and 1-touch play.

Use the soundbar manufacturer’s remote for volume while you finish the Roku setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Roku volume buttons work for TV power but not volume?

The remote is probably using a TV control code that supports only part of the command set. Rerun TV control setup and choose No during the sound test after turning the TV volume back up, so Roku tries another code.

Can a Roku simple remote control TV volume?

A Roku player simple remote has no TV volume controls. A Roku TV simple remote includes TV power, volume, and mute, while Roku Voice Remote models can control TV volume after setup.

Can I use voice control instead of the Roku volume buttons?

Yes. With a supported Roku voice remote, hold the voice button and say a command like turn it up. With Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition, enable hands-free voice with the side slider, then use a Hey Roku volume command. TV power and volume voice commands require CEC for TV control.

When should I factory reset my Roku for volume button problems?

Use factory reset only after narrower fixes fail. It erases preferences, unlinks the Roku account, removes apps and account information, and requires Guided Setup again.
