PowerPoint Designer can disappear, stay grayed out, or stop offering layouts right when a slide needs to look finished. In current Microsoft 365, the feature appears as Design Suggestions for Copilot users and still appears as Designer on supported tablets.
Start with the quick checks that restore the button, then fix the slide content rules that stop PowerPoint from generating layouts.
1. Open Design Suggestions from the right tab
Check the current Designer surface first. In PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows or Mac, open the presentation, select one slide, then choose Design > Design Suggestions.
- For Copilot users, check both Home and Design for Design Suggestions. On first use, select Turn on or Let's go when PowerPoint asks.
- On supported tablets, use the mobile path instead. On iPad, tap Design > Designer. On Android tablets, tap Design > Designer. Microsoft lists tablet support for iPad and Android tablets, not iPhone or Android phones.
2. Switch automatic suggestions back on
- 1.On Windows, open File > Options > General.
- 2.Go to Design Suggestions.
- 3.Select Automatically show me suggestions or Automatically show me design ideas.
- 4.Close the window, then choose Design > Design Suggestions again.
If the button exists but PowerPoint stopped opening ideas automatically, this turns the automatic setting back on. On Mac, open PowerPoint > Preferences > General. Under Authoring and Proofing Tools, go to PowerPoint Designer and select Automatically show me design ideas.
3. Allow connected experiences
Designer needs connected experiences because PowerPoint analyzes slide content before it suggests layouts. If that setting is off, Design Suggestions cannot do its job.
- 1.On Windows, open File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings. Turn on Turn on experiences that analyze your content. If Turn on optional connected experiences appears, turn that on too. Close PowerPoint completely, then reopen it.
- 2.On Mac, go to PowerPoint > Preferences > Privacy > Connected Experiences > Manage Connected Experiences. Turn on experiences that analyze your content, select OK, then close and restart PowerPoint.
Skip older advice that points to Office intelligent services under File > Options > General. Microsoft says that control was removed from newer Microsoft 365 Apps; use Account Privacy and connected experiences instead.
4. Confirm your Microsoft 365 access
PowerPoint Designer on the desktop requires a Microsoft 365 subscription account, with one exception: the Office 365 Germany package does not include it. In PowerPoint, sign in with the account tied to your Microsoft 365 subscription, then close and reopen the app. If the button is missing right after installing Microsoft 365, that restart is the fix Microsoft calls out.
No desktop subscription on that machine? Use PowerPoint for the web for eligible files. Save or move the presentation to OneDrive, OneDrive for work or school, or SharePoint in Microsoft 365. Open it in PowerPoint for the web, then choose Design > Design Suggestions.
5. Clean up the slide layout
- Select one slide only Switch to Normal view, click a single slide thumbnail, and keep focus out of the Notes pane and Slide Show view.
- Use a built-in theme Open Design and pick a theme that comes with PowerPoint instead of a custom or downloaded theme.
- Fix photo slides Use the Title or Title + Content layout, keep the slide to four photos or fewer, and use .jpg, .png, .gif, or .bmp images larger than 200 x 200 pixels.
- Fix list or process slides Use the Title + Content layout and put the text inside a placeholder.
- Remove extra objects Delete drawn shapes and text boxes from that slide, or move the text into PowerPoint placeholders.
If PowerPoint is working but the slide breaks Designer's rules, make a copy of the problem slide, simplify that copy, and test Design > Design Suggestions after each change.
6. Reconnect before trying again
PowerPoint goes online to get design ideas. Reconnect to the internet, then choose Design > Design Suggestions again.
For shared files, check the slide itself. If another person is editing the same slide, wait until only you are active on it. Then make a change Designer responds to, such as inserting a photo.
7. Update Office before repairing it
- 1.On Windows, open any Microsoft 365 app, create or open a document, then choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. If Update Now is missing, choose Enable Updates first.
- 2.On Mac, open any Office app and choose Help > Check for Updates. In Microsoft AutoUpdate, select Update or Update All, then restart PowerPoint.
- 3.On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options. Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
An outdated Office install can leave the Designer surface missing or unreliable. Update first, then repair only if the update does not restore Design Suggestions.
If the Windows update path does not fix it, repair Office. On Windows 11, right-click Start, open Installed apps, select your Microsoft 365 or Office product, choose the ellipses button, then select Modify. For click-to-run installs, choose Online Repair > Repair and follow the prompts.
8. Reinstall Office or contact IT
Use this as the final step after the lighter fixes fail or after moving from a non-subscription Office install to Microsoft 365.
- 1.Go to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- 2.Sign in, select Install apps, and follow the prompts.
- 3.After installing, open PowerPoint and sign in with the account tied to your Microsoft 365 subscription. Desktop Design Suggestions is subscriber-only, so a perpetual Office 2024 license will not restore it. For those files, use PowerPoint for the web from OneDrive or SharePoint instead.
On work or school devices, your organization can block Designer or connected experiences. Contact IT and ask whether PowerPoint Designer, Design Suggestions, or connected experiences that analyze content are disabled for your account or device.
