Hulu subtitles not working on Roku usually shows up in one of four ways: no captions, delayed text, the wrong language, or captions that are on but hard to read. Start inside Hulu first, because supported Roku devices use Hulu's own Captions & Subtitles menu during playback. If that does not fix it, move through Roku captions, updates, restarts, network checks, and a clean reinstall.

Start inside Hulu playback

Open Hulu on Roku and start the show or movie that needs subtitles. Press Up on the Roku remote to show the playback bar, then press Up again to open Settings. Under Captions & Subtitles, choose On, then pick an available subtitle language if Hulu offers one.

Captions can depend on the title and the Hulu profile, so test the setting on the exact show or movie you wanted to watch.

If subtitles still do not appear, refresh the caption language before changing broader Roku settings.

Refresh the subtitle language

This fixes captions that are missing, out of sync, incorrect, or stuck in the wrong language.

Keep the Hulu video playing and open the Hulu playback Settings menu.

Open Captions & Subtitles.

Choose Off.

Return to Captions & Subtitles.

Choose On or the desired language, such as English or Spanish where available.

Resume playback and test the same scene again.

Find whether Roku or Hulu is failing

Narrow the problem before you reinstall anything.

  1. 1.Try a different show or movie inside Hulu.
  2. 2.Try captions in another part of Hulu.
  3. 3.Try captions in a different Roku app.
  4. 4.Try Hulu captions on another device, such as a phone.
  5. 5.If only Hulu on Roku is affected, continue with Hulu and Roku app troubleshooting; if every app is affected, check Roku captions, software, network, and device state.

Turn on Roku captions too

Press Home on the Roku remote.

Open Settings > Accessibility.

If Accessibility is not listed, open Captions instead.

Open Captions mode.

Choose On always, On replay, or On mute.

During playback, press Star on the Roku remote.

Open Closed captioning and choose the caption mode you want.

With a Roku voice remote or the Roku mobile app remote, press the voice button and say turn captions on.

Leave Hulu Captions & Subtitles on, because some streaming apps use their own caption controls.

Fix unreadable caption styling

When subtitles are present but invisible, tiny, oversized, or hard to read, adjust Roku caption style from Home > Settings > Accessibility > Caption style.

On Roku devices that do not show Accessibility, open Captions instead. You can change Text style, edge effect, size, color, and opacity.

You can also change Background color, Background opacity, Window color, and Window opacity. Hulu may use its own styling on some Roku devices, so return to Hulu playback settings if Roku style changes do not affect that app.

Update and restart the app

The most common cause to clear after subtitle settings is stale app or system state.

From Home, highlight Hulu, press Star, and choose Check for updates.

Reopen Hulu and test captions again.

Update Roku OS and installed apps from Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check Now.

Let Roku download and install any available updates, then allow it to reboot when prompted.

Restart the Hulu app from Home by highlighting Hulu, pressing Star, and choosing Restart.

Restart the Roku device through Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart.

If Power is not shown, go straight to System restart.

Check network and power

Use this when captions lag, vanish during buffering, or Hulu has loading problems at the same time. It also applies when caption trouble shows up across multiple apps.

Check Roku network status at Home > Settings > Network > About.

If Roku is disconnected, select Set up connection and follow the on-screen instructions.

After the connection is confirmed, select Check connection.

Power-cycle the Roku by turning it off.

Unplug the Roku from power for at least 10 seconds.

Plug it directly into a power outlet and test Hulu again.

If network symptoms continue, unplug the router for 10 seconds.

Plug the router back in, wait for it to reconnect, and retry Hulu.

Reinstall Hulu cleanly

Press Home and highlight Hulu.

Press Star and choose Remove app or Remove channel, then confirm.

Restart the Roku device.

Open Store > Apps, find Hulu, and choose Add app.

If Hulu does not appear after adding it, run Settings > System > System update > Check now.

Open Hulu and sign in with the Hulu username and password you created, whether you subscribed through Roku or directly through Hulu.

If Hulu is billed through Roku and Remove app is unavailable, manage or turn off auto-renew before removing it.

Use the Roku mobile app path Devices > Apps on Roku if the physical remote is unavailable.

Escalate the right problem

This separates an unsupported Roku, a bad Hulu caption track, and a Roku-wide accessibility problem.

Check Hulu's supported Roku devices before going further.

Hulu supports Roku 2 (4210X), Roku 3, Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Streaming Stick+, Roku Streaming Stick 4K, Roku Streaming Stick 4K+, Roku Express, Roku Express+, Roku Express 4K, Roku Express 4K+, Roku Premiere, Roku Premiere+, Roku Ultra, Roku LT (2700X), Roku TV, Roku Streambar, Roku Smart Soundbar, onn. Roku Smart Soundbar, and Roku Smart Speaker.

If the problem happens only with exclusive, live, or subscriber-only content, verify your Hulu subscription on Hulu account pages.

For Roku Pay billing, check active subscriptions at my.roku.com/subscriptions.

Contact Hulu Support or use Feedback Form > Report a problem with Hulu when captions are missing, wrong, or out of sync only in Hulu after settings, updates, restarts, and reinstalling.

Email [email protected] when captions fail across Roku TVs, Roku streaming players, the Roku mobile app, the Roku website, or other Roku products.

Use support.roku.com/contactus for billing or general technical support.

Use factory reset only as a last resort from Home > Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.

On Roku TV, choose Factory reset everything and follow the on-screen instructions.

Expect a factory reset to erase preferences, unlink the Roku account, remove apps and account information, and require Guided Setup and app sign-ins again.

Do not use older Classic Hulu Captions menu instructions or undocumented Roku clear-cache remote sequences as current fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Hulu subtitles work on my phone but not on Roku?

That points to the Hulu app or Roku device, not the caption track itself. Turn captions on inside Hulu, refresh the subtitle language, then update, restart, or reinstall Hulu on Roku.

Can Roku captions override Hulu subtitles?

Roku caption settings can help apps that honor Roku system captions, but Hulu also has its own in-playback Captions & Subtitles menu. Set Hulu captions first.

Why are Hulu subtitles too small or invisible on Roku?

Open Settings > Accessibility > Caption style and adjust text size, color, opacity, edge effect, background, and window settings. If Hulu ignores those changes, use Hulu's playback caption settings.

Should I factory reset Roku to fix Hulu subtitles?

Use factory reset only after settings, updates, restarts, network checks, and reinstalling Hulu fail. It erases preferences, unlinks the Roku account, removes apps, and requires setup again.
