Finding a friend on Steam gets confusing when several people use the same profile name. A Friend Code or invite link gets you past the duplicate names. Here’s how to find the right person, send a request, and deal with account restrictions that get in the way.
Search for your friend’s Steam name
Open Steam Community search in your desktop or mobile browser. Under Search for friends, enter the person’s Steam alias.
Open the matching profile. Multiple people can share a profile name, so confirm that you have the right person before sending a request.
Select Add Friend. The other person must accept the request before you become Steam friends.
Use a Friend Code to skip duplicate names
Use a numeric Friend Code when a name search brings up too many matches. Ordinary outgoing Friend Code requests require an unrestricted Steam account.
Ask your friend to copy Your Friend Code from the Steam add-friend page while signed in.
Open that page while signed in to your own account.
Type their code into Enter a Friend Code.
Check the returned profile.
Select Send Invite. Your friend needs to accept the invitation to complete the connection.
Connect with a Quick Invite link
A Quick Invite connects you directly and works between limited accounts, too.
- 1.Open the Steam add-friend page while signed in.
- 2.Under Or send a Quick Invite, select Generate new link.
- 3.Select Copy.
- 4.Share the link with the person you want to add.
- 5.Have them open the link, sign in if necessary, and accept the invitation.
Open a shared profile link
Already have their Steam Community profile URL? It takes you straight to their page without sorting through duplicate names. Otherwise, ask your friend to send you their profile link.
Open the link while signed in to Steam.
Select Add Friend. They then accept your request.
If your limited account stops you from sending the request, use the Quick Invite steps above. Another option is to give your profile link to someone with an unrestricted account and have them send you a request.
Find someone already on your friends list
This search finds existing friends, not everyone on Steam.
In the desktop Steam client, select Friends & Chat at the lower right.
Select the magnifying-glass control.
Type the person’s name into Search Friends.
Open the matching friend.
For browser access, sign in to Steam Chat.
Use the friends interface there to find the person.
Reconnect with someone from a recent game
Looking for someone from your last match? Steam’s recent-player page lists players reported by games that support its played-with feature.
While signed in, open your recent players page.
Open the relevant player’s profile.
Select Add Friend to send a request.
To access friends while playing an overlay-supported game, press Shift+Tab, the default Steam Overlay shortcut.
Open the friends and chat interface, or use the overlay browser to open Steam Community search or a shared profile.
If the overlay is unavailable, open Steam > Settings > In-game.
Turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. The overlay shortcut is also configurable under In-game.
Open the game’s Library entry > Properties… > General.
Check that Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game is enabled there, too.
Resolve restrictions that stop friend requests
Use the Quick Invite steps above if a limited account prevents you from sending an ordinary request. This route does not require payment.
Alternatively, give your profile link to someone with an unrestricted account so they can send you a request.
Accept their incoming invitation in Steam.
To remove limited-account restrictions, meet Steam’s US$5-equivalent requirement through qualifying Steam Store purchases or Steam Wallet funding. Receiving a gifted game or a digital gift card does not satisfy that requirement.
To unblock someone still on your friends list, open Friends & Chat.
Right-click the person’s name.
Select Manage > Unblock All Communication.
For someone no longer listed, open your profile’s Friends > Blocked > Manage Blocked List.
Select the person.
Choose Unblock.
Check your profile’s Friends page for a full friends list if requests still fail. Outstanding invitations count toward the limit. Another user’s block also prevents requests, and Steam Support will not override it.
If Steam Families parental controls restrict Community or chat access, ask an adult in your Steam Family to open Account Settings > Family Management > Manage.
Have the adult expand your child-account entry.
Have them check the Enable Parental controls toggle, then configure Steam feature access in the panel that appears.
Have them allow the Community and chat features needed for the friend interaction.
Keep a Friend Code or profile link handy so you can return to the correct person without repeating a name search.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I send a friend invite from the Steam Chat mobile app?
In the separate Steam Chat app for iOS or Android, tap the upper-left menu button. Select Add a Friend, then Invite Link. Generate a link and share it by text or email. The recipient opens it to connect. Steam Chat is distinct from Steam Mobile.
Can I find new friends through Steam groups?
Yes. Open a relevant Steam Community group and select Members. Browse the member list or use Search. Select a person’s name to open their profile, then select Add Friend. Discussion author links also lead to profiles. Joining a group chat does not automatically add its members as friends.
Can I add someone directly from a game’s player menu?
Yes, in games that provide a Steam profile or friend-request action. Select the player, use the game’s supplied action, and complete the request in Steam’s overlay. Each developer chooses whether and where to include this feature, so there is no universal scoreboard or menu path.
Does Steam Guard’s QR scanner add friends?
Steam Guard’s QR scanner is for signing in. It is not an official friend-scanning method.
