Opera GX is the gaming browser designed specifically for gamers, featuring unique tools like CPU limiters, RAM limiters, and networking controls. While it comes with Google as the default search engine, you might prefer alternatives like Bing, DuckDuckGo, or other privacy-focused options.
Changing your default search engine in Opera GX is straightforward and gives you more control over your browsing experience.
Accessing Search Engine Settings
To get started, open Opera GX on your computer. Look for the hamburger menu icon in the top-right corner of the browser window.

Click this menu icon, then scroll down and select "Go to browser settings" to access the full configuration options.

Changing Your Default Search Engine
In the Settings menu, scroll down to the "Search engine" section. You'll see a dropdown menu labeled "Search engine used in the address bar." Click on this dropdown to view all available search engine options.

Select your preferred search engine from the list. Opera GX supports popular options including Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and several others. Your choice will immediately become the new default for all searches performed in the address bar.
Managing and Adding Search Engines
If you want more control over your search options, click on "Manage search engines" in the same section. This opens a comprehensive interface where you can:
- Set any search engine as default by clicking the three dots next to it and selecting "Make default"
- Add custom search engines that aren't in the predefined list
- Remove search engines you no longer use

To add a custom search engine, click the "Add" button and provide the name, keyword, and search URL. This is particularly useful for specialized search engines or internal company search tools.
Once you've made your changes, close the Settings tab. Opera GX will now use your selected search engine whenever you search from the address bar, giving you the personalized browsing experience you prefer.
