When your Honor Magic 7 Pro won't send or receive text messages, it cuts off a fundamental way you communicate. Messages might fail to send, not appear, or you might see a generic error. Let's get it working again.

Restart Your Phone First

This is the quickest fix for most temporary glitches. Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds until you feel a vibration and see the Honor logo appear. This force restart clears the phone's memory and refreshes the connection to your carrier's network.

Check Your Mobile Data and Signal

SMS messages need a cellular signal, and MMS (picture messages) require mobile data to be active. Look at the top of your screen. If you see an "X" or no signal bars, move to a different location. You can also swipe down and tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn it on, wait 10 seconds, then tap it again to turn it off. This resets your radio connections.

For MMS, ensure mobile data is on. Go to Settings > Mobile network and make sure the Mobile data switch is enabled. If you're on Wi-Fi, some carriers require you to turn off Wi-Fi for MMS to send properly, which is a quirk worth testing.

Verify Your Default Messaging App

MagicOS 9.0 comes with Honor's Messages app, but if you've installed another one like Google Messages, things can get confused. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Tap on "SMS app" and make sure your preferred app is selected. I'd stick with the Honor Messages app for initial troubleshooting to rule out third-party app issues.

Clear the Messaging App's Cache

Corrupted temporary data can break sending and receiving. Go to Settings > Apps, find and tap on your messaging app (like "Messages"), then select Storage & cache. Tap Clear cache. This won't delete your messages. If the problem persists, you can try Clear storage next, but be warned this will erase your message history within the app.

Check Your APN Settings

Incorrect Access Point Name (APN) settings are a common culprit for MMS failure. These are provided by your carrier. Go to Settings > Mobile network > Access Point Names (APN). If the list is empty or you're unsure, you'll need to get the correct APN details from your carrier's website or customer service.

Tap the "+" to add a new APN or edit the existing one. You must enter the details exactly as your carrier specifies. Once saved, make sure to select it as the active APN. A mistake here, even a single typo, will stop picture messages from working.

Update Your Software

System bugs in MagicOS or Android can affect messaging. Go to Settings > System & updates > Software update and tap Check for updates. Install any available updates. These often include patches for connectivity and app stability issues that could be causing your problem.

Reset Your Network Settings

This is a more thorough step that resets all network-related configurations to factory defaults. Go to Settings > System & updates > Reset. Tap on Reset network settings. You'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and re-pair Bluetooth devices, but it can resolve deep-seated network and messaging conflicts.

Check for Blocked Numbers

If messages are failing from one specific contact, you might have blocked them. Open your Honor Messages app, tap the three-dot menu, and go to Blocked numbers or a similar setting. Review the list and unblock the number if needed. The path can vary slightly depending on your default SMS app.

Reinsert Your SIM Card

Power the phone off completely. Use the SIM eject tool that came in the box to pop out the SIM tray. Remove the SIM card, wait 30 seconds, then carefully reinsert it and power the phone back on. This re-establishes the physical connection to your carrier's network and can clear provisioning errors.

Contact Your Mobile Carrier

If you've tried everything, the issue might be on your carrier's end. There could be a service outage in your area, a problem with your account provisioning, or SMS/MMS might be disabled on your plan. A quick call to their support can confirm if the service is active and if there are any known issues they're working to fix.
