A Fairphone 5 with an unresponsive touchscreen can be incredibly frustrating. The screen might be stuck on a single app, the lock screen, or just a black display. Since the Fairphone 5 runs Android 14, most freezes are temporary software glitches you can fix yourself without losing any data.

Perform a Force Restart

This is almost always the first thing you should try. Press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds. Keep holding it until you see the Fairphone logo appear on the screen. This forces a clean reboot of the system software and resolves most temporary freezes.

If the Power button method doesn't work, you have a unique advantage with the Fairphone 5. You can physically remove the back cover and take the battery out for a few seconds, then reinsert it. This is a guaranteed hardware-level restart that clears everything.

Give It a Moment

Sometimes the phone isn't truly frozen, it's just working hard on a background task. The Fairphone 5's performance can lag behind other phones at its price point, so a large app update or system process might cause a temporary slowdown. If the phone feels warm, it's likely still processing. Wait 5-10 minutes before taking further action.

Check the Charging Connection

A critically low battery can cause the phone to become unresponsive. Plug it into a charger using a good-quality USB-C cable. For the fastest charge, use a 30W USB-PD charger. Let it charge for at least 15-20 minutes before trying to turn it on again.

While the Fairphone 5 doesn't support wireless charging, its modular design means you can easily swap in a spare battery if you have one. A fresh battery can sometimes kick-start a phone that seems completely dead.

Close the Problematic App

If the touchscreen works in some areas but one app is frozen, you can force close it. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold to enter the recent apps view. Find the frozen app and swipe it up off the screen to close it completely. Then try reopening it.

If a specific app keeps causing freezes, check for updates in the Google Play Store. An outdated app might have a bug that conflicts with Android 14. As a last resort, uninstalling and reinstalling the app can clear its corrupted data.

Free Up Internal Storage

When your phone's storage is nearly full, the operating system has no room to create temporary files, which can lead to freezing. If you can access your settings, go to Settings > Storage to see what's using space.

You can offload photos and videos to cloud storage or a computer, or delete unused apps. Aim to keep at least 5-10 GB of free space to ensure smooth operation, especially since the camera files can be large.

Install the Latest Software Update

Fairphone is committed to long-term support, promising 8+ years of software updates. These updates often include bug fixes that could be causing your touchscreen issue. After restarting, go to Settings > System > System update to check for and install any available updates.

Reset Your App Preferences

Corrupted settings for your apps can sometimes cause system instability. You can reset these without deleting your personal data. Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset app preferences.

This action resets all notification permissions, default apps, and background data restrictions. You'll need to re-grant permissions to apps afterward, but it can resolve conflicts causing the freeze.

Consider a Factory Reset

If the touchscreen remains unresponsive after all other steps, a factory reset may be necessary. Since you likely can't navigate the settings menu, you'll need to use the hardware keys. First, power the phone off completely.

Then, press and hold the Power button and Volume Up button together. Hold them until the Fairphone logo appears, then release. Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and select it with the power button. This will erase all your data, so it's a last resort.

Let the Phone Cool Down

All phones can overheat, and the Fairphone 5's slightly thicker, modular design can sometimes trap heat. If the phone feels hot to the touch, it may have frozen to protect its components. Remove it from any case, take it out of direct sunlight, and let it cool down for 20-30 minutes.

Avoid using or charging the phone while it's overheated. Once it's back to room temperature, try turning it on again. Persistent overheating could indicate a deeper issue with a specific module.
