You set up a Routine on your Echo Show 21 to play the morning news at 7 AM, dim the lights, and show your calendar. For weeks it worked perfectly. Now it just doesn't fire. The news never starts. The lights stay bright. The big 21.5-inch screen shows yesterday's weather instead.
The fastest fix that works in most cases: open the Alexa app, tap More > Routines, find the broken Routine, open it, tap Edit, then tap Save without changing anything. This forces a re-sync to Amazon's cloud and reactivates the trigger. Give it two minutes and test again.
Why Echo Show 21 Routines Stop Working
The Echo Show 21 is Amazon's largest smart display, part of the 2024 lineup with built-in Wi-Fi 6E and a Fire TV interface. Routines can fail here for a few specific reasons:
- Routine assigned to the wrong device: if you created the Routine on your phone but it's set to run on another Echo, the Show 21 won't execute it.
- Wi-Fi congestion or dropouts: the Show 21 uses the 6 GHz band which can be less stable in some homes, causing cloud-triggered Routines to fail silently.
- Fire TV mode instability: a known issue on this device is that Fire TV mode can drop back to the home screen after extended use. If your Routine launches Fire TV, the drop can interrupt it.
- Old Skill interface scaling: older Smart Home Skills may not display correctly on the 21-inch panel, and sometimes that visual glitch hides a failed command.
- Account location off: sunrise/sunset triggers need an accurate address.
Make Sure the Routine Is Set to Run on the Show 21
Open the Alexa app, head to More > Routines, and tap the Routine that's failing. Scroll down to the From section. If it shows your phone or another Echo device, the Show 21 won't hear the wake word or respond. Change From to your Echo Show 21 and tap Save. This is the most common cause I see on this model.
Check That the Show 21 Is Online
In the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo Show 21. If it shows as offline, it can't run any cloud Routines. Unplug the AC adapter for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. After it reboots (takes about a minute), it should reconnect to your Wi-Fi 6E network. Test the Routine again.
Verify Each Smart Device Responds Directly
Tap the screen to open your Smart Home dashboard. Try to turn on each device that the Routine controls. If a light or switch doesn't respond directly, the Routine can't either. Remove the unresponsive device from the Alexa app and re-add it through the device discovery flow. The Show 21's large screen makes this easy to do right on the display.
Update Your Location for Sunlight Triggers
Sunrise and sunset Routines depend on your account address. If you moved or the location is wrong, the triggers will fire at the wrong time or not at all. In the Alexa app, tap More > Settings > Your Locations and confirm your home address. Update it if needed the triggers recalculate instantly.
Disable Alexa Hunches Temporarily
Alexa’s Hunches feature can override Routines if it predicts a different action. For example, if your Routine turns on the living room lights but a Hunch decides you're not home, it blocks that command. Open the Alexa app, tap More > Settings > Your Hunches and pause Hunches. Test your Routine. If it now works, you can leave Hunches off or configure them more carefully.
Reset the Fire TV Mode If Your Routine Uses It
A known issue on the Echo Show 21 is that the Fire TV feed can drop back to the home screen after extended use. If your Routine launches a Fire TV app, this drop can break the entire Routine sequence. To reset Fire TV mode without leaving the Show, just tap the Fire TV icon on the home screen to relaunch it. If the drop happens often, try restarting the device as described above first.
Handle Old Skills with Scaling Issues
Some older Smart Home Skills weren't designed for the 21.5-inch panel. If the Skill's interface looks stretched or clipped when you open it on the Show 21, the Routine command might still execute but appear to fail visually. Check the Skill provider for updates, or remove and re-add the Skill in the Alexa app under More > Skills & Games. A fresh install often fixes scaling quirks.
Check for Firmware Updates
The Echo Show 21 has a known bug: after a firmware update, the Picture Frame mode resets its photo source. The same update can reset other settings that affect Routines. Go to Settings on the device (swipe down from the top) > Device Options > Check for Software Updates. Install any pending updates and then re-save your Routines in the Alexa app.
Factory Reset the Show 21 (Last Resort)
If none of the above works, a factory reset will clear any deep software glitch. On the Echo Show 21, swipe down from the top, tap Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults, then confirm. The device wipes all local data and restarts in setup mode. For a softer restart that doesn't erase anything, just unplug the power for 30 seconds. A factory reset removes paired devices, dashboard widgets, and locally saved settings, but account-level Routines re-sync once you log back into the Alexa app.
