Microsoft Family Safety can keep screen time, web filters, app blocks, activity reports, and purchase approvals active across Windows, Xbox, Android, Edge, and Microsoft Store purchases.

The cleanest way to turn it off is to remove the person from the Microsoft family group; the targeted way is to switch off only the controls you no longer want.

Everything from step 4 onward needs an organizer account, because Microsoft only lets organizers switch these safety settings on or off. An adult member who is stuck with limits has to ask an organizer to lift them or leave the family group instead. Start with the family group, then move through the individual settings that still apply.

1. Start with the family group

The main switch is the Microsoft family group, not the Family Safety app on one device. Open account.microsoft.com/family > More options > Leave family group > Remove next to your own name to leave the group. When Leave family group is not shown, use an organizer account because organizer permissions are required for adding or removing people.

2. Remove a child or another family member

This fixes Family Safety controls that still apply because the person remains inside your Microsoft family group. Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in with an organizer account. Find the person you want to remove, then select More options next to their name.

Choose Remove from family group. Select Remove consent for this child's account before continuing when Microsoft prompts for it, then select Remove to confirm.

3. Shut down the family group completely

Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in as an organizer. For each other person in the group, select More options next to the person's name, choose Remove from family group, then select Remove to confirm.

Repeat until everyone else has been removed. Next to your own name, select Leave family group. Use this route when you want the whole group gone instead of just one member's limits.

4. Turn off screen time limits

This fixes time blocks on connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices without removing anyone from the family group. Open the Microsoft Family Safety app, then tap the tile for your family member.

Go to the platform you manage, such as Windows or Xbox. Select More options, then select Turn limits off.

5. Stop activity reports

Open Microsoft Family Safety, then tap the family member account. Make sure the person's device is connected to Family Safety. Tap Settings in the top right corner. Turn Activity reporting off for Windows, Xbox, Mobile, Edge, or Spending.

6. Disable web and search filtering

This fixes website blocks and search filtering in Microsoft Edge while the family member is signed in. Sign in to your Microsoft account with an organizer account. Select Family Safety from the menu on the left. Find your family member and select More options.

Choose Go to overview, then select Edge as the platform. Turn Filter inappropriate websites and searches off. Turn off Only use allowed websites and Always allow educational websites when those controls are enabled.

7. Remove app and game blocks

Sign in at account.microsoft.com as an organizer. Select the family member's tile or card. Choose Windows, Xbox, Edge, or Mobile under the child's name, then select the Apps and games tab.

Select More options next to the blocked app, then choose Unblock app. To remove app and game time limits instead, open the member's Apps and games area and turn App and game limits off.

8. Turn off spending approval

Purchase approval is managed separately from screen time and website filtering. Open Family Safety app or family.microsoft.com > child's name > Manage spending > Require approval for every purchase, then turn that approval setting off.

That toggle covers purchases made with a payment card added to the child's own account, so it is not a blanket off switch: Microsoft still requires approval when a purchase is above the child's age limit or the child is out of money. In the same spending area, turn off Get notified about every purchase and Activity reporting when you no longer want spending alerts or spending reports.

9. Fix restrictions that stay on after removal

  1. 1.On each affected Windows device, press Windows key + R.
  2. 2.Enter cmd, then select OK.
  3. 3.Run schtasks /run /tn "Microsoft\Windows\Shell\FamilySafetyRefreshTask".
  4. 4.Restart the computer.

Older service-disabling, scheduled-task-deleting, and Control Panel Family Safety instructions are not Microsoft's supported fix for stuck Windows restrictions. Microsoft's current remediation is the Family Safety refresh task above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does uninstalling Microsoft Family Safety turn it off?

Uninstalling the app removes it from that device, but it does not remove Microsoft account family group rules by itself.

Why can’t I leave the Microsoft family group?

When Leave family group is not shown, use an organizer account. Organizer permissions are required for adding or removing people.

Can an adult remove parental consent for a child account?

Yes, but only the adult Microsoft account that originally granted consent can remove that consent.

Do web filters work in every browser?

No. Microsoft Family Safety web and search filters work with Microsoft Edge while the family member is signed in to their Microsoft account.
