You are staring at a long web page and need one name, price, sentence, or phrase without scrolling through the whole thing. Every current major browser has a built-in Find tool that jumps straight to matching text. Start with the shortcut on a computer, then use the browser-specific phone steps below when you are on mobile.

1. Start with the desktop Find shortcut

  1. 1.Open the web page you want to search.
  2. 2.Press Ctrl+F on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS. On a Mac, press Command-F.
  3. 3.Type the word or phrase in the Find field.
  4. 4.Press Ctrl+G or Command-G to move to the next match.
  5. 5.Press Ctrl+Shift+G or Command+Shift+G to move to the previous match.

On a computer, the browser Find command is the fastest way to search for a word on a web page. This shortcut works in current Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, Safari on Mac, and Firefox. Chrome, Edge, and Brave also support F3 on Windows. In Firefox, close the Find bar with Esc or X.

2. Search from Chrome on Android or iPhone

Chrome uses a menu command on phones and tablets instead of making you remember a keyboard shortcut.

Open the page in the Chrome app, then tap More. On Android, tap Find in page. On iPhone or iPad, tap Find in Page….

Enter the word or phrase you want to find, then use the highlighted matches to move through the page. On iPhone or iPad, tap Done when you are finished. On Android, Chrome also shows scrollbar markers so you can see where matches appear on the page.

For a PDF opened in Chrome on Android 12 or later, open the PDF link. Tap More, then tap Find in page. Enter the text, then use the Up and Down arrows.

3. Use Safari controls on iPhone and Mac

On iPhone, open the page in Safari. Tap the Page Menu button, then tap Search Document. Enter the word or phrase, then tap Next Result to jump through other mentions.

On a Mac, open the page in Safari. Press Command-F, then enter your search. You can also click the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, choose Find, and type the text. Safari’s Find pop-up can search for text that contains or begins with what you enter.

4. Open Firefox Find tools on desktop

Open the page in Firefox. Press Ctrl+F on Windows or Linux, or Command+F on Mac. Type in the Find in page field, then use the Next and Previous arrows to move through matches. Press Esc or click X to close the Find bar.

Firefox also includes Quick Find, links-only search, and an optional type-to-search setting. You can open the Menu button, then choose Find in page…. When the Menu bar is enabled, use Edit then Find in Page….

For faster searching on a page, press / when the cursor is not in a text field. Type the word or phrase. To search links only, press ' when the cursor is not in a text field. Type the phrase; Firefox selects the first matching link.

To make Firefox start searching as soon as you type, open the Menu button. Go to Settings, then General and Browsing, or Tabs and browsing and Page navigation. Turn on Search for text when you start typing.

5. Find words in Firefox mobile apps

In Firefox for Android, open the page. Tap the Menu button, then choose Find in page. Enter your search term or phrase, then use the Up and Down arrows. Tap X to close the search view.

In Firefox for iPhone and iPad, tap the Page Actions menu. Choose Find in Page, then enter the word or phrase. Use the Up and Down arrows, then tap X to return to regular view.

In Firefox Focus for iOS, open the page. Tap the Menu button in the bottom-right corner, then choose Find in Page. Enter the word or phrase. Firefox for Android, Firefox for iPhone and iPad, and Firefox Focus for iOS all keep page search in the browser menu.

6. Check Samsung Browser and Chromium desktop browsers

Samsung Browser has its own Android menu path, while Opera, Brave, and Vivaldi follow the familiar desktop shortcut pattern.

In Samsung Browser for Android, open the page. Tap the Tools icon or More menu, then choose Find on page. Enter the word or phrase. Samsung says Find on page can also search text included in images.

In Opera on desktop, press Ctrl+F on Windows or Linux, or Command+F on macOS. Use Ctrl+G or Command+G for the next match. Use Ctrl+Shift+G or Command+Shift+G for the previous match.

In Brave on desktop, press Ctrl+F or F3 on Windows or Linux, or Command+F on Mac. Use Ctrl+G, Ctrl+Shift+G, Command+G, or Command+Shift+G to move between matches.

In Vivaldi, use the default Ctrl+F or Command+F shortcut for Find in Page. To change it, open Settings, choose Keyboard, find the shortcut, and enter the new keys.

When a website takes over a shortcut in Vivaldi, open Settings. Choose Keyboard, open Browser Priority Shortcuts, and add the shortcut the browser should keep handling. For per-site control, go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Website Permissions. Choose Add New Domain or select a domain and change Prioritize Website Shortcuts.

7. Ask AI when matching text is not enough

Find works best when you know the exact word or phrase. When you need an answer from the page instead of a direct text match, use the current AI page tools in Chrome or Edge where they are available.

In Chrome, tap the Address bar. Choose AI Mode, then enter a question. To ask about the active tab, use the add menu and choose Add current tab. Google says some AI tools are not available to all users and are gradually rolling out outside the US.

In Microsoft Edge, sign in with a personal Microsoft account. Open a website, video, or PDF, then press the Copilot icon in the upper-right corner. Ask a question about the page.

In Edge at work, press the Copilot icon in the toolbar. Ask questions about what you are viewing or summarize content when Copilot is enabled for that environment.

8. Ignore Internet Explorer advice

Some old instructions mention Edit then Find on this page in Internet Explorer. Microsoft has retired Internet Explorer 11, so use Microsoft Edge for current browsing. Edge supports the modern Ctrl+F, F3, and Command+F Find shortcuts.
